We used to do the same, but I haven’t seen them for years now.

I dont know if it will be health and safety or rather that they were a bit rubbish. We used to do them too. They were always more exciting as a concept than the reality

I bought some from Robert Dyas a couple of years ago, if you have one of those stores near you.

DH has fond memories of his father doing them when he was young. They might have been worth looking at.

DH and his family also had a tradition of indoor fireworks at family meals as did we, I can remember one which turned into a sort of weird writhing worm.
When H was in the Royal Free over Christmas and we wheeled him down to the cafe I was horrified to see his sister bring out a box of matches and an indoor firework with the intention of setting it off!
Can you imagine the effect on the fire alarms , smoke alarms and sprinklers and trying to evacuate a huge 12 storey teaching hospital with some very very sick patients? That would surely have got top billing on my Christmas disasters thread! ????

We always used to buy a box at Christmas and everyone enjoyed them, even though they were actually not very good. I think it was more the anticipation and the turning off of the lights that was exciting. I still have the stained baking tray on which the fireworks were set off and I can still remember the toxic smoke smell that lingered for days.

I only remember sparklers although there may be a very distant memory of something fizzing at my granddads hand but obviously didn’t make a big impression on me

Because they had always had indoor fireworks on Christmas Day as children! She wasn’t handling DH’s Lymphoma too well and I suppose she wanted to recreate a familiar memory- not cause a major emergency.
For a highly intelligent woman she can come up with some bonkers ideas.
