There are so many jobs that involve wearing a uniform, but I've never been issued with one. Probably because I'm office based so just expected to be presentable. What uniforms have GNs worn over the years? I think the Armed Forces are very smart.

School uniform. Baggy grey skirt and square neck blue blouse. WAAF uniform during the war.
Husband enlisted in Grenadier pre war and dress uniform bearskin hat was real and heavy. Nylon nowadays.

Not for work, but school. Back in 1968, when in the 2nd year in a rather strict all girls grammar school, we all got together with the other years and negotiated a new uniform to replace the dowdy grey skirt, pink/ white check blouse and black/ red stripe blazer. We were listened too and our uniform became any black/ grey skirt or trousers, any black, red, grey or white top, jumper or shirt and no blazer, unless we were on a school trip. We were trendsetters in the uniform stakes, especially with the trousers ☺️

Never had one - office worker - until the current job when some front of house staff were issued with uniform fleece jackets and we in Finance managed to persuade the Ops manager to gift us one each.

Personally I'd be delighted to wear a uniform, I think it's a great way to build team spirit if everyone from the CEO down is in the organisational livery. But I appear to be in a minority.

Yes, my school uniform. It was brown and to this day I never wear brown.

I was going to say no, then I remembered wearing a polo shirt with logo and black trousers when I worked in a children's nursery. There was also a red sweat shirt which I hated as I don't suit red at all.

I wore big knickers underneath

School uniform including straw boater. First rule - buy school bag big enough for books and boater!!

I wore a uniform working as a lifeguard. I wore a tiny pleated blue skirt and a collared T-shirt with lifeguard printed on it and a sweatshirt if needed. When I walked around the pool I used to spot men trying to look up my skirt. This was over 30 years ago.

Uniforms, and decor generally, give patients and clients confidence that the setting is special and the personel are professional.

jaylucy - sounds like you worked for Specsavers. I did too - hated the button through blouses which would pop open as you were leaning close to a patient! Loved the most recent tops in pink and navy and the long scarves that I used to think concealed my stomach! I'm retired now and still miss working for them even though they really made us work hard.

I took an evening class in phycology.
He gave us a general questionaire to fill out mainly on our views in life
from which he then guessed, mostly correctly , what professions we were involved in or had been . For mine
he asked if I had been a policewoman or a soldier, close , it was the WRAF Interesting though

Oh sodapop, that must have been frustrating.

I think my ma in law was past the stage of working at that point and had been persuaded into her cap and cape as it just looked so funny.

sodapop Tue 15-Feb-22 21:07:59

Matron told me I had to wear a white coat instead of my uniform when my belt started getting higher and higher Coastpath I was very disappointed as I has only just got my staff nurse blues.

Coastpath Tue 15-Feb-22 20:52:55

This thread is reminding me of a brilliant photo of my mother in law taken when she was 9 months pregnant and wearing her nurses uniform. She is the only woman I have ever seen completely fill a cape!!

My first job in the office of the school I attended.
8 of us and we wore a royal blue nylon overall.

Yes, as a nurse, and I was so very proud. I loved wearing the heavy cloak, which was part of our uniform at the time. We had a cap that had to be very carefully pleated each time it was laundered.

I forgot school uniform, I did wear that. Grey and maroon.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 15-Feb-22 18:39:22

I wore uniform when I was a gamesmaker at the London Olympics, with pride. I was unlikely to wear any other team kit in any sporting event....

I never wore a school uniform, hated not having one as my Mum always made me wear sensible clothes and we hadn't much money so I couldn't keep up with fashion and stood out.

Been wearing greens for the past 12 years as a paramedic, wearing the green, living the dream as we say. It's great not to have to think what to wear.

BlueBalou Tue 15-Feb-22 17:38:02

School uniform, Brownies, Girl Guides, Rangers, traditional nursing uniform- starched collar and cuffs, apron and cap, grey striped dress as student then blue as staff nurse and navy as sister.
Student midwife was blue dress then a white dress when you qualified as a midwife.
Various nurses uniforms as staff nurse, sister, District Nurse then smart suit in management role.
None since I retired!

MerylStreep Tue 15-Feb-22 17:25:02

I had 2 uniforms when I worked as a croupier. Monday to Friday was a long black dress, Saturday and Sunday was a long red dress.

M0nica Tue 15-Feb-22 17:15:43

Didn't think about that - and at my graduations.
