Can anyone recommend a good cheese substitute that is good for cooking. I tried to make pizza but the “ cheese “ I bought didn’t melt. I want to make cheese sauce for my GD who has a dairy and gluten free diet.

Violife have a variety of non dairy cheese , you can get it in Sainsburys or Waitrose. I like the Viospread which is a creamy texture a bit like Philadelphia nice on crusty bread. They do a reasonable cheddar alternative which I quite like in a tomato sandwich. You can buy non dairy mozzarella which is supposed to melt but I can’t vouch for it as haven’t tried it. Engevita do nutritional yeast flakes which have a Parmesan flavour which is good sprinkled on pasta and could do well on a veggie pizza. Waitrose and Sainsburys do vegan pizzas btw.

I agree with vegansrock, Violife is the closest I've tasted to real dairy cheese and it does make a good sauce and crispy cheese topping. I actually prefer it now to real cheese. Tesco does a lovely vegan halloumi style cheese which is also high on my list of go-to substitutes.
My favourite Violife cheese is the smoked cheddar.
At Christmas time, Violife do a box of four cheeses which I saw in Tesco and Sainsbury's. Think Waitrose also do a good vegan cheese range.
Hope that helps!

My granddaughter is dairy intolerant too but loves cheesy pasta. I buy dairy free hard cheese from the supermarket and it does make a good sauce, sorry I can't remember the brand .

My husband is not vegan but cheese upsets his digestive system. I use Violife mozzarella for lasagne pizza macaroni etc or added to vegan /plant cream for a sauce.
Engvita yeast flakes to sprinkle on anything is a savoury cheese tasting addition. All these products have extra vitamin B12. You could just use tofu with the Engvita to make a sauce. All these products are available in supermarkets.
