Help at the filling station with tyre pressures?

I hope Grans don’t think this is as daft question but …
I am unable to squat to pump up my tyres at the petrol station. I have one total knee replacement & the other desperately needs doing so squatting is very painful.
I am also deaf so if I stoop, which hurts my back, I’m unable to hear the signal to tell me the required pressure is reached.
As a result, I put off checking my tyres,
How have other contributors out there overcome such a problem please?
Do you rely on family members or have you come across other solutions? For example, are petrol station staff trained to help drivers like me? Is it a secret nobody knows about?

I pop up to the garage that services my car and they do it for me.

Any decent fuel station will inflate your tyres free of charge, although i do give the lad that has helped me every now and then a £2 tip .

Thanks for your responses. Yes! I’ll try my service garage. Hadn’t thought of that. Doh!

We have our own tyre pump, plugs into the car, I can do it in the dry before I go out.

haven't seen that for about 40 years.
are you in the countryside ?

i simply asked one how to use the machine i was unfamiliar with, had inserted a pound, but was just waved away y staff.
no good trying to argue, queue of people waiting to pay for fuel could turn ugly.
so i gave up.
i could use the old machines ok, but they've changed.

If you go into a tyre fitting shop like Kwikfit or similar I’m sure they would check the pressure.

My husband was checking the tires last week, I was sat in the car supervising ??, a lady pulled up along side and asked if he would help her, my son ( in his mid 20s ) said an elderly lady asked him the other week.

I keep my own plug in tyre pump in the garage. I may start charging friends and family who find it more convenient to drop in for a tyre check at - Kalu’s Garage. ?

DaisyAnne Fri 25-Mar-22 22:25:37

What does the pump plug in to, please Kalu?

Kalu Fri 25-Mar-22 22:30:41

It plugs into the 12volt socket in my car DaisyAnne.

Galaxy Fri 25-Mar-22 22:52:46

Yes it just plugs into where you would plug a phone charger etc.

Spice101 Sat 26-Mar-22 05:29:55

I just bend from the waist enough to place the pump attachment on the valve and depress the lever. No need to squat.

Kalu

It plugs into the 12volt socket in my car DaisyAnne.

A word to the wise: it’s a good idea to run the engine whilst using the tyre inflation machine as it might flatten your battery.

A few years ago, ATS suggested I had my tyres filled with nitrogen (the preference for F1 tyres!) which they top up for me without charge every few months. I’m happy to tip for this service.

I'm about to go to the garage soon to do this dreaded chore . I go early to avoid tutters ! I'm conscious of taking too much time - it's a real wrestle for me but I'll get it done ! Last year after a second knee replacement I was forced to ask a lad to help , an awkward hubcap was making it difficult to reach the nozzle . I remember Shell used to employ a ' yardman ' who even offered to fill your petrol. That was before lockdown , so not that long ago !

Could you keep a little footstool in the boot to sit on? nonogran ? I don't have a solution for the hearing problem though, other than to ask another customer to keep a lookout for you.

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 26-Mar-22 07:52:23

The AA sell a tyre inflator for less than £15.00.
You can do it in your own time, at home, with no pressure (see what I did there?) from tutting motorists or kneeling down in the pouring rain.
Yes, I do leave the engine running, mine won’t work with the engine off.

I cannot tell you how much better reading this thread has made me feel. I have always felt so silly for letting my tyres - tyres for heaven's sake - overwhelm me with anxiety. And then along comes a GN thread that makes you feel that others understand and have even found solutions.

Thank you all.

Kalu Sat 26-Mar-22 08:09:43

Leave the engine running as per the clear instruction booklet.

Every day is a school day on GN DaisyAnne ?

Nonogran. You are not alone , I can’t do my tyres either, I am nervous of the machine, I don’t want to keep drivers behind me waiting, and I can’t bend down to get the hubcaps off , Solution? I ring my kind brother up to do it for me , the. I take him for a coffee. Everyone’s happy !

merlotgran Sat 26-Mar-22 08:25:31

I bought a tyre inflator last year when I moved house as I was unfamiliar with local garages.

If you go on YouTube and type in the make you’ll be sure to find an instruction video.

I also use it for blowing up the tyre on my wheelbarrow. ?

This has been a little niggle for me for some time so I share your anxiety. My hearing loss also makes hearing the 'beeps' difficult so I keep looking out for the flashing on the pump as well.

When I lived in Devon I used to go to East Devon Tyres and a young man did it for me on a regular basis when it was quiet and refused to take payment on the unspoken understanding that I'd get my tyres from them when needed. Then I moved house.

Back in the midlands, sometimes there's a motorist near by who helpfully listens out for me but I admit it makes me feel foolish. I always thank them profusely.

Once it stopped when I'd only done three tyres but the girl behind the till couldn't come out to help as she was working alone (on a Sunday, not always the case in the week) and a young male customer kindly came to my aid. I then learned that the previous £1 had to go up to £2 to do all four tyres - an increase from the previous 50p which used to suffice.

On a weekday there are two people there and once I went in to ask if one of them could come out just to listen to the beeps for me. One of the ladies said, "I'll do it for you" which was so kind. I guess if you're buying their petrol too it's the least they can do. I appreciate this.

Thus far I've mostly managed but I can see that with my difficulty bending (and getting in and out of the car without wincing) will eventually lead me to ditching the car altogether. Not what you want to hear, I know. In the meantime I muddle along.

Your local Kwik fit or Halfords might be able to help - worth asking, anyway.
