Any one else still doing their own decorating?

Just spent most of the afternoon painting 2 walls. Felt a bit grumpy whilst doing the job, even though I was enjoying listening to the radio. Used to like DIY - think maybe at 68 I’ve had enough!!
Husband gave up helping about 4 years ago so think I’ll down tools too.
Would rather be in the garden -

We usually rub along happily but as soon as decorating comes on the agenda we begin to scrap - my sanding is never smooth enough, he's always far too pedantic!
Consequently we decided many years ago that when decorating was needed we'd pay for that for the sake of peace. It seems to be working out so far!

I never started!

DH is 79 in May and still does our decorating, tiling etc. The hall, stairs and landing want doing soon, he did do it last time but I am insisting we get a decorator to do it this time.

I have always done it myself but I struggle now with joints I felt defeated last year. I got someone in to do it.

I've always really disliked decorating but we've always done our own (DH mainly, me as backup) until the hall, stairs and landing needed doing again, so last time we got a professional decorator to do it.

I'm starting redecorating the bedroom tomorrow and dreading that because it means shifting a heavy bed away from the wall to get behind it to decorate. If I decorate one room, it makes the others look drab so on I plough! grin

Halfpint
I do some of there’s as well. I’m 76.

We have a brilliant man who has a team including his daughter, son in law and nephew. They are fabulous to have around and I am looking forward to our next excuse to have them in.

Yes another one here still happy to do the decorating. This
winter I re-wallpapered my lounge . Glad to say my daughters
don't shy away from it either. We all like visits to the wallpaper
shop.

I decorated my hall last year at 76 and about to start on my bathroom and front door ( 77) I don’t do the ceilings any more though

M0nica Sun 27-Mar-22 20:37:56

We arevery like merlotgran and continue to do as much as we can. We are both in our later 70s and I have been decorating for most of the last six months as we have had an extension built and it needed decorating inside and painting outside. DH project managed the work and also did lots of odd jobs on the extension.

We both learned to decorate in our family of origin and have always done everything ourselves. We renovated our current home, a small bungalow, in 2013 before the furniture arrived. Have redecorated it since. Mr C is 79, I’m 74 and we’re about to dip our toes into the world of decorators. It will be odd to have someone else take over but for some things it’s time.

Another no here. Scared to climb a ladder, go dizzy if my head tilts back and to be honest I don't think at almost 70 I should be expected to. Although it's expensive to get someone in its the only option. My sons are not very practical and have busy stressful jobs so just wouldn't ask them.

merlotgran Sun 27-Mar-22 20:35:18

PS - I'll be 75 in June. grin

merlotgran Sun 27-Mar-22 20:34:02

I've always done the decorating, wherever we've lived. When DH was alive he would take care of plumbing, electrics (where possible), picture hanging, putting up shelves etc.

I moved into my bungalow last October and have just finished all the decorating. The only thing I didn't attempt was re plastering and painting two ceilings!

I'm now painting all the outside woodwork in the garden and upcycling the 27 large plastic pots that were left by the previous owner.

Good job I like painting!

JaneJudge Sun 27-Mar-22 20:32:24

It is really hard work imo

kissngate Sun 27-Mar-22 20:32:13

My DH has never decorated until a few years ago it was always me up the ladder usually hanging precariously over the stairwell. However the year he complained I got paint on the carpet was the last time I decorated. Got a decorator in after that. We moved recently and I was going to paint over a purple wall. However a knee injury means it will stay purple unless I employ someone to do it.

Well done Chewbacca - 69 and still decorating, result

Chewbacca Sun 27-Mar-22 20:30:24

I am! I've just finished painting and decorating the kitchen and dining room. Must admit that what used to take me perhaps a day or so, has taken me twice as long this time and I'm utterly cream crackered. But, I emptied it all, prepped it and painted it myself and I'm pleased with the results. I'm 69.

Iam64 Sun 27-Mar-22 20:24:45

My dad taught me to wallpaper and paint. He wasn’t a decorator but one of the generation who didn’t/couldn’t pay someone for a job they could do. Mr i loathes and detests any DIY so I did it. Mahout 9 years ago we extended the kitchen area. I got a decorator to paint it. Never looked back. I’m lucky, my lump sum pays and I no longer stand on ladders, probably a Good Thung

BBbevan Sun 27-Mar-22 20:17:54

Yes, DH and I have just finished a bedroom with en-suite. We have done it all other than lay the new carpet. I love it and a great sense of satisfaction when we finished .

GrandmaSeaDragon Sun 27-Mar-22 20:07:24

I’ve always done all the painting and decorating since we bought our first property in the early 70s, we certainly couldn’t have afforded to pay anyone in those days and Mum and Dad had set a good example. I still enjoy it but find doing the ceilings too much now. Difficult to get others to do it, but we’ve just had an estimate to decorate the vaulted kitchen and a bedroom, which I shall happily accept!

Jaylou Sun 27-Mar-22 20:05:03

I moved to my bungalow last March. It is a project, and that includes the garden. I enjoy diy and will do most things, laying a floor next week and tiling the kitchen. So many jobs and so little time. I am a sprightly 61. I think this will be my forever house...... till the next one!

MerylStreep Sun 27-Mar-22 19:54:52

Yes. We did everything in this bungalow 8yrs ago when we moved in.
March 2020 i decided to do all the paintwork again.
Last month we did our bedroom again.
Then there’s always something to paint in the garden.
I like decorating ?

Cabbie21 Sun 27-Mar-22 19:42:17

We have been in this house eight years and there are still areas which have not been decorated. We can’t do it ourselves any more. The problem is too much stuff to move to get someone in, and nowhere to move it to.
