According to Michael Mosley it's the latest superfood - good for our brain and can make us run faster!

And relatively cheap compared to blueberries and avocados.

I really like it but have to admit have never cooked it from raw - I buy it the vacuum packs.

Beetroot

Tillytrotter £1.25 for a bunch of 5 beetroot and it will last me 3 more days at least

£1.90 for five here in supermarkets, £1.50 at the market. sad
It was under a £1 for a bunch this time last year.

My seedlings are coming along nicely, thank goodness!

The smell, feel and taste, nay, the very thought of it make me shudder in horror.
My mother couldn't eat a salad without it.

But I won't have it in the house.

Well, you did ask.

My sons have discovered it for themselves after a while childhood of "deprivation".

Nortsat Fri 29-Apr-22 13:35:35

Oh, I can’t bear it.
I think it’s hideous.
I have a real aversion to it.

I have tried twice to eat it, but I simply can’t.
Yuk.

Like beetroot.
I sometimes find white/ pale beetroot. Boil skin and put in a sauce which is a white sauce made with vinegar. Served hot as a vegetable with a hot meal. Delicious.

I cooked some just 2 days ago and put a few teaspoons of light vinegar on it when I’d sliced it.
Had it in a corn beef sandwich one day, and with pork pie, tomatoes and crusty bread and butter another. So yes, I love it.

It’s served with stovies and an oatcake in my corner of Scotland!

If you want the "full benefit" of beetroot (for the brain/BP/sport you mustn't boil it as the beneficial nitrates are water soluble.

So strange to think that nitrates may be good for you! I have been choosing my sparkling water by their lack of nitrates for years!

It’s disgusting ! Tastes of mud !

Blondiescot Fri 29-Apr-22 12:54:10

I like it - love a goat's cheese and beetroot salad. We do grow it in the garden and pickle it, but it's such a messy job!

jaylucy Fri 29-Apr-22 12:53:40

I used to love it when you used to be able to go to your local greengrocer and buy cooked beetroot that they did on the premises when it was in season.
Walking out with several in a brown bag, hoping it wouldn't leak onto the rest of your shopping (if you had forgotten a spare plastic bag!) and get home when it was still warm was lovely.
Jars of beetroot in vinegar or the vacuum packed ones that go mouldy after a few days, even if in an airtight container just aren't the same.
It's also supposed to help lower blood pressure , so another reason to love it in my case!

Awww... flowers
The African violet thread made me think of my mum.
I really miss her.

spottybook Fri 29-Apr-22 12:47:31

I love it, as did my Mum. Her favourite was cheese and beetroot sandwich and after she died I remember one day getting really upset thinking she will never eat cheese and beetroot again. Funny how things bring back memories.

Nannagarra Fri 29-Apr-22 12:30:08

Love it. Grow it and give some to my neighbour whose children have now been converted.
Boiled, cooled, skin rubbed off, sliced and enjoyed!
It’s good for blood flow and BP.

I don't love it but I'm not averse to it either. I certainly wouldn't go to the bother of preparing it myself but sometimes buy it ready to eat and add it to a salad. These I only eat when it's too hot to cook.

Audi10 Fri 29-Apr-22 12:02:24

Yes love it

MissAdventure Fri 29-Apr-22 11:59:42

I've never tried it in anything other than a sandwich.
I ought to give some of the other things a try.

I do readymade (gasp!!!) mozzarella and beetroot burgers.

HousePlantQueen Fri 29-Apr-22 11:58:25

I love it in its every form; pickled, boiled, roasted in a sandwich with cheese. It's one of those things that I forget that I like until I buy some, as I did a week ago, and every time I go to the fridge I stick a fork in the jar and have a couple of slices. Unlike the poor poster who has unhappy memories of it staining a summer dress, I have happy memories of it because my beloved grandmother always had it on the tea table, and my grandfather grew it.

flump Fri 29-Apr-22 11:58:16

Love it, especially freshly boiled and I would enjoy a whole one! Have it in a salad; roasted; in a sandwich with a little black pepper. If pickled I prefer it in sweet vinegar.

Blossoming Fri 29-Apr-22 11:53:46

I love it on hot pot.

MissAdventure Fri 29-Apr-22 11:52:40

If anyone is interested, I'm fairly certain you'd be able to grow the cut off top.
It looks the type, anyway.

BlueSapphire Fri 29-Apr-22 11:51:16

Can't abide it. DH loved pickled beetroot, though.

Callistemon21 Fri 29-Apr-22 11:42:01

I was annoyed to see Beet Wellington on a menu once for £25 (that was a menu of two courses).

merlotgran Fri 29-Apr-22 11:39:58

Beetroot burgers or falafel…..Yum!!

BlueBalou Fri 29-Apr-22 10:43:16

I love it, roasted with pepper and halloumi or feta, a salad of beetroot, feta, cucumber and walnuts or simply pickled with cold meats and new potatoes. Plenty of black pepper and I’m happy!

Casdon Fri 29-Apr-22 10:32:34

It’s so easy to grow, but I don’t bother because I’m ambivalent about it. I don’t mind the odd pickled beetroot in salad, but I’m not keen on it boiled or roasted at all. I prefer some of the other ‘superfoods’ vegetables like kale, broccoli and garlic.
