Like MOnica I had electrolysis on my chin quite a few years ago for about 2 years and I'm still hair free....Worth the expense and the slight discomfort...smile

Oh the joys of getting older. I had a couple of chin hairs which were like barbed wire and use the Finishing Touch Flawless device. It’s great in removing lip and chin hair but regrowth is pretty quick. So I invested in the Philips Lumea IPL when it was on offer in Costco about 6 months ago and noticed a difference after several uses but you have to be consistent. Also, it’s not suitable for fair hair.
It’s fairly pricey but a good buy compared to how much I’ve spent on professional waxing and other treatments over the years.
My barbed wire has disappeared ?

Electrolysis didn't work for me. Neither did laser light treatment.
Ruby laser was great for a few years then it started to retrn.
Electrolysis is supposed to destroy the hair follicle - and for some, it works.
Laser works on the pigment in the hair so if your whiskers are white then it won't work.
Embrace your fuzziness and tweeze out any stronger whiskers.

Slight discomfort? Your pain threshold must be very high!

I have the dreaded peach fuzz ( or Old Lady fuzz as I call it) and I use an epilator. It’s really good and plucks the hairs rather than shaving them off. It makes my eyes water when I’m using it but the effects last several weeks. I bought mine from Boots about four years ago when it cost around £50.

They seem to have the knack of avoiding whatever it is you try by lying flat until the coast is clear, then popping up, victorious, to give a 2 finger salute.

I love your sense of humour MissA, some of your comments have me in tears, so thank you.
Regarding hair loss, have you tried taking Folate, not folic acid but its more absorbable sister? It is effective. I take it as my hair loss, caused by steroids was getting worse. My hair is back to normal now, even though I’m still taking the steroids.

I use a mix of tweezers occasionally Nair sensitive hair removal cream and at home waxing! The hairs are less than they where and my preferred way is use 10 times mirror (a bit eeeek but shows what u r dealing with) and tweezers!

IPL. I have a philips-lumea-prestige-ipl-hair-removal-device _ does everywhere and it works even on those chin hairs and no doubt Bert

I used to go to a beauty salon and have "Epil Pro", but haven't been for a few years. It's essential to treat the area with a warm compress/flannel to open the pores before tweezing and use a cotton wool ball with rosewater or toner after to close the pores. Personally I wouldn't shave. I now have a strong magnifying mirror, good tweezers and a torch to change the light around to catch the beggers. It's important to check in different lights -

The lovely lady at the beauty salon called them Wisdom Hairs. Stubborn ones she would call "strong". great image!

Boots do a good facial hair remover cream - why are chin hairs so spikey and dark …asking for a friend?

grandtanteJE65 Mon 09-May-22 13:42:46

As far as I know electrolysis is permament, but when I enquired about it, I was told that the beautician would only remove fair hairs if I dyed them for some weeks before the treatment as othewise they would be too difficult to see!

This put me off, and up til now I remove the hairs on my chin using a pair of eyebrow tweezers. I funk doing the same on my upper lip, where it hurts more, so cut back my moustache with a pair of nail-scissors.

I did once use Veet for facial hair and found it quite good, although you have to use it a day or so before going anywhere, as it left me with a angry red upper lip, or whatever the bit between your lip and nose is called.

Now they don't seem to make it any more, and the one from another firm I tried removed the skin but left the hairs! And yes, I had followed the instructions carefully.

I can't see to trim my eyebrows any longer, and they are getting bigger and bushier by the minute, although the hair on my head, armpits and pubic area is thining - those on my legs and arms are still flourishing. I shave them, but don't advise shaving one's upper lip or chin, as the new hairs growing in look very black - five o' clock shadow to rival my black-haired father's.

I would also recommend the Philips Lumea IPL. A present to myself for my 70th birthday. It doesn’t work miracles but with consistent use over time regrowth is finer and eventually disappears. It worked really well on my legs and is making a difference to my chin. Before hat I used an epilator which definitely weakened regrowth.

I had electrolysis for about 10 years (aged 40-50 ish). All the hair returned, plus more. Waxing is good, but you have to grow it long enough between treatments to be waxed again. Now I use an epilator. I can tolerate it on my chin and neck, but it stings on the upper lip, so I use the shaver attachment there. It certainly is the bane of my life and some has to be removed at least every two days.

Milliedog Mon 09-May-22 14:49:09

If you shave facial hair, how long does your skin remain hairless? And does the regrowth feel bristly?

InTheCove Mon 09-May-22 15:08:57

Laser hair removal is permanent. I have had it done on my legs, underarms, upper lip, chin and bikini line. Occasionally, I will get a very fine hair growing on my legs which I razor off, but otherwise, completely hair free smile.

Diane7 Mon 09-May-22 15:42:00

I know we are talking about facial hair but I just wanted to make a comment about epilators. I have usually shaved under my arms but dreaded summer with strappy dresses as I always seem to have a '5 o'clock shadow'. Anyway gritting my teeth and perseverance with an epilator I have to say they are brilliant. Less hair grows back each time, I think you can get them especially for faces.

It really is just an instant fix.
My hairs are starting to sprout back almost the next day.

Not permanent but quick and super effective - less marks and scars than anything else. You do need to practice on knees etc before! Braun Silk Epil.

abby0950 Mon 09-May-22 16:31:38

For facial hair I tried most things. Electrolysis was expensive and did not work. Then it was cream which left a "red moustache" for hours. I then tried waxing at beauticians and I have a small permanent brown mark on my upper lip which was caused because a small bit of skin came off with the wax and started to bleed (this was 15 years ago and the mark darkens with the sun). I now use an electric mesh razor for my chin and upper lip. I do this about every 10 days but it takes seconds. I use the epilator attachment for my legs and it is brilliant. The hair growth takes ages to grow back in and the growth has almost disappeared and comes in very soft and hardly noticeable. Have not used it on my face though.

M0nica Mon 09-May-22 16:33:02

using a razor on your face gives you stubble. Not a great tng at the best of times, but certainly not for a woman.

So funny ?

I use a Braun facial epilator about once a fortnight, I'd be the bearded lady otherwise.

pinkjj27 Mon 09-May-22 16:48:11

I had electrolysis a few years ago when I was still quite young. It is by far the best thing I have ever done in terms of self care, it was expensive and it takes take a while, so can work out very expensive but I paid my beautician fortnightly per session Many will do that.

H1954 Mon 09-May-22 16:58:04

I only have one 'interloper ' on my chin and he's easily eliminated with the tweezers! ??

Nanna58 Mon 09-May-22 17:21:02

In a beauty article the author suggested tweezing eyebrows and chin in the drivers mirror of the car-something about the light and positioning and she was right! However if I need to do this I either park in the unmade road near my park, or far far away in the nether reaches of Tesco car park - it is most definitely not a spectator sport ??
