Well I can’t pretend to know anything about football, and can’t remember ever being remotely interested in a game.
But, yes this was history in the making, I told my granddaughter, when she’s my age, they’ll still be showing that winning goal.
Excellent role models, lovely girls, so pleased for them.

How anyone can say it is just football is beyond me. It is history..sporting history, womens rights history

NannyJan53 Mon 01-Aug-22 07:48:41

There is always one to put a damper on things isn't there.

I was truly enthralled to. After years of girls and women being told we cannot play football, it IS history in the making.

And then Gary Lineker posts this ? couldn’t he just have congratulated the team on their wonderful win without a truly asinine attempt at a joke?

Awful. And the comments after

Mr Lineker just cannot help himself, perhaps there is an element of jealousy on his part?

DillytheGardener Mon 01-Aug-22 07:45:51

Grandma70s it is history! It is a an event of national and international importance.

I’m not usually a football fan but I was enthralled by the England team, if you don’t care for sports just flip over the channel, it’s not like we are are in the old days with a tiny selection of channels to watch.

Grandma70s - I can't believe that you felt you had to post all that negativity on a thread so full of joy and happiness. Why?
"Read the room!" ......... We really don't care!!
And, believe me, It definitely is HISTORY - just look at how the 1966 World Cup is still talked about. That makes it HISTORY.

Grandma70s

And please, playing and winning a football match is not history

I beg to differ it’s sporting history in the making.

Iam64 Mon 01-Aug-22 07:41:47

Oh don’t be such a misery Grandma70. Don’t join in, don’t watch it and Yes, playing and winning this match is indeed ‘history’
Women played football during ww1 but the FA banned women’s games. It’s been a long time coming but the women’ s game is growing. Last night’s game has brought a lot of joy to so many people - hurrah

Grandma70s Mon 01-Aug-22 07:32:13

I am no more interested in women’s football than I am in men’s football. I’m all for equality and women doing what they want, but to me it just means more boring football on television. Sport should have its own channel.

And please, playing and winning a football match is not ‘history’.

Not a football fan, but hearty congratulations to the team. Wonderful role models for young girls.

vegansrock Mon 01-Aug-22 03:12:43

Great not to hear about violent, drunk fans unlike the men’s final.

Loads of women’s teams have white shorts. Apart from time of the month if you play on grass white shorts can be very difficult to get clean. As the person who washed the kit I vetoed white shorts for our team.

Fantastic win tonight. I thought we’d thrown it for a bit when the Germans were all over us and scored the equaliser. Then in extra time we found the energy to score the winning goal and keep possession until the final whistle. Well done England.

icanhandthemback Sun 31-Jul-22 22:29:08

I shed a tear too. I'm not a great fan of football, much prefer hockey, but I was really glad I watched the game. I thought it was brilliant that Prince William was so warm towards everyone. I can't imagine Charles being so touchy feely!

Kittye Sun 31-Jul-22 22:15:31

Well done ladies! I’m not a great football fan, but these women are an inspiration to youngsters everywhere. I couldn’t watch the extra time it was so nail biting. I cried when the final whistle went. Absolutely wonderful!

HettyBetty Sun 31-Jul-22 22:04:23

Fleurpepper Seems I'm not the only one to consider the colour of the shorts. One of the players, Beth Mead has spoken about how this has been discussed and fed back to Nike. White shorts could be a worry for menstruating players.

Brilliant result though, well done Lionesses.

Patsy70 Sun 31-Jul-22 21:36:35

A fantastic result. Congratulations to the whole team and their coach for bringing home the cup. It was such an exciting game. So encouraging for all our young female footballers. ?????????

lemsip Sun 31-Jul-22 21:20:07

what a fast moving game! and we won.

Real role models, real boobs, no fillers and not flagged in makeup- beautiful

What on earth do women have to achieve before we stop commenting on their appearance.

Elrel Sun 31-Jul-22 20:54:00

I rarely watch football but was totally gripped by this match. Great role models for both young girls and many of our highly paid male footballers.
