Also on Twitter

Men It’s coming home, it’s coming home, footballs coming home

Women 60 years later FFS, we’ll go and get it ourselves ?

???

Not a suitable sport for females said the FA in 1921 ?

We'll be wanting to eat Yorkie bars next.

Ohh I don’t think Gary Linekers’ comment was offensive.

Yes he could have just said “well done lionesses” or words to that effect, maybe he did anyway elsewhere (I don’t do Twitter so wouldn’t know)
It was a fantabulous achievement for women and football and great entertainment.
Let’s please not get too precious though.
Plus I’m sure Nike were lovin it
( perverse I know) and not very eco minded of me, but I wanted to put that bra to soak in a whitener… ?
??‍♀️

GrannyGravy13 that is a lovely little work of art, thank you for posting it

Sad that there will be no Downing Street reception for our Lionesses, does awful Boris not like football?

Kim19 Mon 01-Aug-22 15:31:53

Heard on the radio there were 17 million viewers. Takes some beating these days. Wonderful achievement in every way.

Fennel Mon 01-Aug-22 15:09:40

Sorry Grumppa = I know all men aren't the same.

merlotgran Mon 01-Aug-22 13:53:34

Why no bus parade through London?

I bet the men would have had one. ?

Smileless2012 Mon 01-Aug-22 13:10:53

Just watched the celebrations in Trafalgar Square. Still celebrating and who can blame themgrin.

grumppa Mon 01-Aug-22 12:29:49

I am not remotely jealous, Fennel. Nor was the male former professional footballer I was with earlier in the day. It was an exciting and memorable, and historic, sporting occasion.

Fennel Mon 01-Aug-22 11:37:32

I just knew the men were going to be jealous. When did they last win a big competition?
I nearly bashed husband today only he's bigger than me. He said here we are with covid and financial problems global warming etc and all people are interested is football!
It's good news for once grin

Rosie51 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:54:38

25Avalon we didn't actually see her get the yellow card. The commentators said she got the mandatory yellow while I was checking online because I thought she'd maybe got away with it smile

25Avalon Mon 01-Aug-22 10:40:15

Rosie51

She was booked.

I did wonder but I was serving behind the bar at our local football club for our ladies team who were watching on our giant tv screen. Pulling a pint is like going to the toilet - you usually miss a goal or something in the process?

joannapiano Mon 01-Aug-22 10:08:32

I asked my grand daughter if the crowd were all well-behaved at Wembley last night. She said they were, but a chap about 55,there with his son and grandson, was yelling racist and sexist remarks at the start. Then a woman sitting near shouted “Shut up you horrible man” at the top of her voice, and the Stewards escorted them out. Her and her little sister had a wonderful time. The programs and ice creams were v expensive, though!

Rosie51 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:05:37

She was booked.

25Avalon Mon 01-Aug-22 10:00:01

I was surprised Chloe wasn’t booked. Men footballers get booked if they remove their shirts to celebrate during a game.

Woman’s World Cup here we come.

Iam64 Mon 01-Aug-22 09:52:31

Lineker should have known better than comment like that. The misogynistic sexist offensive comments thst followed were so predictable

JenniferEccles Mon 01-Aug-22 09:17:23

Nobody could be more uninterested in football than me but even I got completely caught up in the match last night, and even felt a little tearful at the end. A wonderful achievement!

Of COURSE it’s an historic moment for women’s sport and some much needed glory for our country.
How can anyone think differently?

GG13 I loved the “we’ll get it ourselves” comment so thanks for sharing that!

I didn't find Lineker's tweet offensive, in fact thought it funny and affectionate!

I think it’s the replies that were the problem.

Women are more than just ^bra wearers^

I didn't see the replies.

The bra quip was appropriate as Chloe Kelly did tear off her shirt and show her sports bra in celebration!

It was interesting to hear the comments on the Commonwealth Games programme. The "pundits" were all swimmers, but with an interest in football.

They considered that the women play a better game than the men - less stoppage time and a better-behaved crowd (bigger, too!). I think the women's game is better, too; they play as a team not as individuals looking for glory.

The men are just jealous!

What did Lineker say please?
The tweet has been deleted!

Here it is, some of the replies have been deleted, he couldn’t resist a bra joke
