Just that really; who 'qualifies' , how does one apply, and what is the criteria?
Please be kind, I am not in a good place just now, I've trawled the internet until my head is spinning and getting nowhere.

I think you have to be already in receipt of benefits to qualify, but i'm not sure. I know my cousin had to buy his own scooter when his next door neighbour got one provided for free because he was on disability benefit or something.
Where have you made enquiries? I'd start with AgeUK.

This explains it well PollyDolly.

There is a mobility component of PIP which is the extra money paid to Help with mobility. You can use this to get a car from the motability scheme.

Lots buy them second hand they are often on marketplace or some people here hire them long term probably get an allowance for that I reckon

To claim PIP for the first time you must be under state pension age and receive the enhanced rate of mobility component of PIP.
To claim PIP you need to ring 0800 917 2222. A form will be sent to you to make your claim.

Simply put - as said earlier you need to be in receipt of the mobility (getting around) element of the Disabled Living Allowance (DLA) or PIP. You then use that element to ‘hire’ a car for a 3 year period from a garage included in the scheme operated by Motability - which is the UK’s biggest vehicle hire company. The Motability website has a list of vehicles and costs - most have a fairly substantial down payment (I’m paying £1K+ for DD2’s next Mini - already a year overdue because of a parts shortage) and needs all her DLA payment, which is paid to Motability direct. Obviously, if the disabled hirer is to drive, they must be mentally and physically competent - disability aids can be bought and installed and as sure as they can be that their ability will remain so for the entire hire period.
You can still get a car and nominate someone to drive you around (rules apply) e.g. as a parent would for a disabled child. Certain insurance conditions apply to nominated drivers.
One of the advantages for the disabled driver is that the insurance is included, which could be prohibitive for certain disabilities and some vehicles can be adapted so people can even drive from their wheelchair.
The DLA/PIP can be used to get a car, a scooter or a powered wheelchair - but not all. Many of those who qualify get the payment and use that for taxis or buy their own cars, if they’ve weighed up that’s the best option for them.

I think it depends on if you are referring to mobility scooters or to buying a car using the motability scheme.

My sister in law buys a car using the motability scheme as she is registered as blind - obviously for her husband to drive her places, she can’t drive anymore! She claims PIP as she can no longer work.

On reflection, I think she leases the car rather than buys it.

Thank you all for your comments and information. I am already over state pension age and a fall last year has had a huge impact on my mobility, I would be looking to get a car and not a scooter.
However, you've all provided links and information. to help, thank you.

Leases!!! That’s the word I was looking for Teacheranne
I also forgot that people need to be part of the scheme before retirement age to continue to take advantage of it afterwards.
Disabled youngsters can take driving lessons at 16 (twice the price as I recall!) so they can sit their test immediately they turn 17 to get them independently mobile. DD2 sat and passed her test a week after her 17th birthday, dropped me off at home and drove off to School!

I think this is repeating what has been said but they all help when you are looking.

You can get a Motability car or vehicle if you've been awarded: the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement.

This is from Citizens Advice

PollyDolly, since you are over state pension age you may qualify for Attendance Allowance which unfortunately does not have a mobility component. To qualify you will need care or supervision due to an illness or disability for at least 6 months. To make your claim ring 0800 731 0317.
