Thanks everyone for your help. I am not ready to embrace the grey yet, so will carry on with the highlights (though not pink or purple!) but perhaps with an overall colour first. I’ll speak with my new hairdresser.

I have white hair. In the last few years my hairdresser has been highlighting palest blonde by the foil method. Lovely, adds volume.

I'm in my 70's, have a layered, just above shoulders bob which is coloured by hairdresser to dark brown. I usually have the roots done every six weeks and use a touch up spray on the parting to hide any grey coming through. I have an outdoor sort of life so I get natural highlights from the sun, from time to time the hairdresser puts in low lights. It's very natural looking and youthful, I'm definitely not ready to embrace grey.

Wouldn’t like to be grey

I have an all over colour and some highlights added. Works for me I personally would have to be grey so would do without a lot of things before my hairdresser

I have a hankering for bright purple streaks ?

I use a box dye in 6.3 - mousy brown - which is what I was before pigment waved me goodbye. A hairdresser advised me against having streaks as my hair is slightly lighter where the ‘grey’ ? is more intense.
In the last few weeks I’ve been considering adding some pink. Do you ladies have it at the front - frame your faces with it? Do you use chalks or bottled dye? Is it permanent? I’d love to have a go.

I do my own pink streaks. It's so easy.

No idea what colour my hair is now. Every 6 weeks I have bleech highlights /blonde highlights and purple /pink highlights done by my hairdresser. Gives it a lovely colour dusky greyish pink. Sound awful when you write it down but I'm aways compliment.

All I can say is a member of my social group - since moved away - used to have her hair dyed a really vivid red all over and then have blond highlights put in. She was in her late 70s at the time and had her hair quite short. To me it looked awful but she loved it and I supposed that's what matters?? confused

I suspect my now natural colour is white. I have a blonde overall cover on it. I can opt to split that up with other tones any time I want to. I am 65.

I buy a colour box and get DH to do it for me. He does a good job to be fair - always moans about doing it at the time, but once I tell him how much I’m saving the household purse he soon comes round ?.
I’m not ready to embrace the all grey look yet and my hair is long enough to plait it. I’ve not been to a hairdresser since well before the first lockdown.
Sorry - doesn’t really answer your question - except to say that the decent colour boxes are quite tonal in colour unless you go for dark brown/black that is. I tend to stick to the blonde/caramel colours - they work better for my skin tone and hair type ?

As anyone had their hair given an overall colour and also highlights at the same appointment? My hair is now grey and I’ve had highlights only (3 different shades of brown/coppery/dark blonde used at a time). The effect is subtle, maybe too subtle! I’ve been pleased with it at the time, but then it very quickly looks drab and pepper and salt. It can even look greyish in a photo. I’ve recently changed my hairdresser, although at the same salon, and want a bit more colour in my hair to completely cover the grey. I don’t particularly like/want a monotone colour as I like a bit of interest (albeit reasonably subtle) so I just wondered if anyone has the overall colour and highlights done at the same time please? I’m a bit disappointed at appearing to look grey and drab despite spending quite a bit of money!
