Fired Up About Fireplace

My first choice would be a wood burning stove, but then I’m surrounded by forest so it’s a no brainier in my case.
A media wall sounds good, is that a big wall tv, that does it all so to speak?

I’m sure someone will be along soon who knows about these things!

We had the same but took it all out and had a multi fuel log burner put in and never regretted it.

I’d go for something in keeping with the house. On this development we all have inglenooks in one form or another. Only one resident has removed theirs - some (including me) have wood or multi fuel burners, some have gone for gas and a few still use a smokeless fuel. However, mine has been unlit for 2 years, so is filled with fire cones, candles and fairy lights.

I cant comment on a media wall as I don’t really know what that is.
If it’s heat you want a wood / multi burner is brilliant, otherwise gas fires are more instant heat than electric.

I have a multi-fuel stove which is recessed back into fireplace. It makes things neater. I just open the glass door to fuel up etc there is a small ash pan but it does not need emptying a lot. I love it in the winter. It helps me feel relaxed and content.

What is a media wall route I m curious ?

I had a wood burner installed earlier this year, it’s an eco efficient one and heats the room brilliantly. I love sitting watching the flames too.
Personally I dislike televisions that dominate the room, I have no idea what a ‘media wall’ is ?

I think a media wall is an electric fire that looks like a giant tv screen, though to be honest, I don’t know if it’s a real tv that can be programmed to run what represents a real fire crackling in the hearth - I’ve seen something similar in some hotels, but they had the fire effect on, so I couldn’t tell you if they were real tv’s as well. Someone better informed may come along to enlighten us. ?

We had a log burner installed not long after we moved in - best thing we ever did.

Media walls are quite modern - see below - and whilst everything is contained and streamlined, doesn’t (for me anyway) give the same cosy feel. Plus with fuel prices being so high, we plan to make the most of our log burner to reduce using the central heating.

You say you never use the fire, in which case, why replace it with a working fire?

Just block the fireplace up so that it is no longer drafty (that will be a real energy saver) and then put in one of those electric fires where you can switch the flames on and get the wood/coal burning effect, without any heat, and incorporating a fan heater for those very few days when an hour or so of extra heat would be nice.

When DD moved into her home she bought a cheap second hand electric flame effect fire as a temporary measure until she could decide what to do. 16 years on it is still there because it proved to be the perfect solution in itself.

You can then put a big tv, or whtever, on the wall above it..

Do you have central heating? If so do you need additional heating?

I have a large living room that spans the width of the house with windows at either end and I find that the radiators at either end are sufficient. I live in the south so I rarely experience extremely cold weather. I did light a fire in my still operational fireplace but I found it made the room too hot and stuffy.

Now I have silver birch logs piled in the fireplace with a trough of house plants in front. I have an over mantel looking glass and a clock on the mantelpiece. All very low tech and old fashioned I know but it works for me.

I am all electric with Electric Fireplace suites. I would absolutely love a multi fuel burning stove and am thinking about getting one. There are a few neighbours around me who have got them installed and they swear by them.
