Unexpected windfall

In the last two weeks I have received refunds from two well known online companies that were both more than I paid in the first place!
In both cases the goods I had ordered were never delivered. I have no idea why one company overpaid me, but I believe the other refunded me the full price of the item rather than the sale price. The difference in the latter was a considerable sum.
Should I let them know their mistakes or should I just sit on the money as compensation for my inconvenience and wait for them to ask for it back?

What does your conscience tell you Quizzer? Would it prey on your mind?

I would be inclined to tell them.
But this is just me.
I do see how tempting is is to just leave it though - especially as it's their fault.

I always look at the reverse side of this, I would be annoyed and speak to the firm concerned if they refunded the sale price when I had paid full price. I would tell them about the error Quizzer.

Sorry, Quizzer, but I would feel guilty. As sodapop says, you would be furious to be reimbursed for the sale price rather than what you had paid so it’s really a no brainier.

I would tell them because quite irrationally I believe I would lose the money in other ways.

I expect you would be told to keep it as there is no system to reclaim the difference.

Can be a head banging exercise. I received something I didn't order and told the company, then followed a very strange exchange of emails ending up with them crediting me for the item I did order and receive even though I told them there was no problem with this. I have now given up as they do not seem to grasp the problem at all

I think ilove beige has the right logic do what you think is right for you, some people wouldn’t think twice, for some it would burn a hole in their purse I don’t think anyone on here can answer you as there will be many different views
There are variables too if it’s a small struggling firm or a big one paying little tax ….are you struggling?

My OH ordered a tablet, guaranteed delivery, next day. Nothing arrived. After a week and many texts, he told them to refund his money. After a number of weeks his money was refunded although he had to bring his credit card company into the conversation. We had forgotten about it all when a very battered box arrived about 2 months later with tablet inside unharmed. He hum'd and haa'd what to do but I told him he would always feel guilty when he used it and he needed to tell the company it has turned up. Well, this is even more time intensive than getting the money back. First they told us to get in touch with the Courier and return it to them. We refused and said no, you must arrange that, the Courier must turn up on our doorstep and collect it as has happened previously with returned goods from other companies. Obviously the actual people who are dealing with this aren't British or are very stupid as they keep answering questions not asked or repeating what we have told them we won't do. The tablet is still on the top of the tumble dryer in it's box, awaiting further instruction. We last heard from them 8 days ago. My husband hasn't yet said "Why did you tell me to contact the company?" but he must be wanting to. You try to be honest and the world is against you.

We went out for Sunday lunch last week and our card was debited with 23p instead of £23. We went back. It's a small independent pub but we probably would have even if it was a big chain.

A few years ago , we and 4 friends went for a meal at a very busy pub whilst in holiday.
My DH went to the bar to pay the bill and realised that they had only charged for one course, most of us had had three. Neither were the drinks on the bill. He call the barman over to tell him there was a mistake. Very rudely he was told ‘We don’t make mistakes’.
Exit 6 customers who had enjoyed a very good meal and drinks for the price of a starter.
Normally we would always point out a mistake in our favour or not

I believe in honesty.
However I wonder will someone get into trouble if you tell. That might stop me telling them.
