How to find out if someone has died.

I am trying to find out if an old friend has died. I do not have an email for them but have tried phone and post to no avail. If I google their name I am led to ancestry web sites like ‘Find my past’ which have a reference to the person but then want me to sign up at some cost to get any further information. Has anyone else got any ideas how to proceed? If it’s relevant the person’s address for many years is in Scotland.

You could look for their name on this site, for the UK:
funeral-notices.co.uk/national/death-notices

There's a website 192.com which you can search for a smail cost but I don't know how up to date that is.

Do you have any mutual friends / contacts you could try.
You could also search local papers for an obituary...if printed

There is a BMD site which is free.
I don't know how up-to-date it is or how precise but it could have the information you need.

Phone their local council and ask if there has been a funeral for them.

Could you contact their local registry office?

192 will give you everyone of that name in the area you asked for and they will have the other occupants names alongside .That way you can edit to just people with relatives names you would recognise. At that stage you'll have a postal area but if you want the full address and phone number you'll need to pay .
Strangely I was doing just this last night because I saw a friends social media and business website had all been deleted .Hes not on the address either just his wife and daughter so I'm about to call her now.

I have a similar problem. My supervisor from when I was working has always sent a Christmas card, but nothing for the last 3 Christmases. I still send to her, but have heard nothing for 3 years. If she`s still with us, she`ll be around 86 years old. I don`t know any of her family, so don`t know who to ask.

Could you contact your old work place Hellogirl?

They might know, perhaps work pension or other staff members might have more up to date information.

Look up Scotland's People. It's a super, free site for Deaths, Births, Marriages etc

If you googled the name plus obituary that often works .

Calendar girl, my old work place no longer exists, it`s been demolished and is now a housing estate.

You could try the government probate search site, you will need year of death but you can try all years since you had heard from them. It is free unless you want a copy

No Christmas card last year so I will wait and see what happens this year. One thing I’ve thought of doing is writing a letter and posting to a nearby neighbour.

I tried that site and did a search for both my parents - I couldn't find either of them so it is not particularly reliable.

When you send cards, do you put an address label for you on the back. I always do that, and more than once have had a communication from someone to tell me the person has died

tiredoldwoman Tue 01-Nov-22 15:03:44

Yes, Maria59. I used it many times freely . It's good , isn't it ?

You can check on Scotland’s People. You have to register but it’s free and you only pay if you want further information

Your local library might have a prepaid subscription to most family history sites. Usually accessible in house with a library card X

I find rightmove.co.uk sold prices handy to find it friends have moved, there is a delay of a couple of months from sold to on the site. If they owned their own home might be some help to see if sold or not, good luck
