Wonder when you first noticed you were aging quickly

When I was in my late fifties I looked very young for my age and felt great. Over the last two years I seem to have aged dramatically. I am early 60s. I just don't look like I did back then and feel like I have changed such a lot in a short period of time and this has affected my confidence. My husband is very kind and reassuring but it does worry me. I have had more of my fair share of difficulties and bereavements during this time so wonder whether this can accelerate aging. Its mainly looks wise at the moment, my skin and hair are terribly dry and lots of wrinkles appearing. I just wondered if others started to age quicker around this age or if any of you have any useful advice. I am really very cross with myself for being so vain as I do have a lot of other things in life to be grateful for.

I bought some stronger reading glasses to help with a particular task- and started to notice how thin and wrinkled the skin on my hands look! I'm in my mid/late 60s..I think I just couldn't see the wrinkles - or silver streaks in my hair before the new glasses!
I had to go for an op a year ago and they made a mistake with my date of birth - making me a whole decade older - and no-one noticed ( until I did!)-gosh did I really look almost 80??

GranEd

When I looked in the mirror and saw my mum looking at me!!

I agree with you Gran Ed until then I had always been told I looked like my dad. Mum appeared late 60's. Wrinkles ultra sensitive skin and age spots on my face and hands. During lock down my hair started to go grey.
Personally, I don't think you can keep age at bay. If it isn't your face It's moles where you never had them or bad veins in your legs. Not me but others I know. I just moisturise and hope for the best.

I am same sort of age as op.
I aged 3 years in about 3 months, late 40s.
Since then, ok again for the time being.

I too lost 3 stone, through illness, and every bit of me looks older unless it's covered up.

It's since I've had problems with my knees.
People keep asking me if I'm ok and do I need help as I hobble along instead of walking properly.

I thought I did when I cracked my pelvis last year but having just had my lenses cleaned, I’m shocked by all the wrinkles I can see. Even worse I can see all the dust too.

Aged 70 to now just 72 because last year and a few months was getting out of abusive marriage and was awful and it shows on my face now the strain. Body wise my body is still younger as I've done yoga nigh on 45 years. so make the most of that!

About a year after cancer, I suddenly aged about 10 years. Immediately after, when my hair came back, I looked great. A good 5 or 6 years younger than my age. Then BOOM! Middle aged. I get it, it was stressful. But I didn't really want that reflected on my face!

I'm fast approaching 80, when I quit skiing I'll be old.

Around our 70th birthdays - born 3 months apart - a close friend and I noticed our arms had become wrinkled 'overnight....'...

I met some old friends at a pub for a birthday celebration recently, and we asked the waiter to take our picture. The result was unbelievable! Who was that enormous old woman in front? It was me. 🫣

I had a lot of family stress in the recent past. But more so this last year that definitely has had an affect on my health. I have Osteo arthritis in several joints it isn't getting any better.
Along with other age related niggles but just have to accept that's age. Wrinkles are the least of my worries so I will grow old naturally and not vain.

The last year or so, when I’ve had a few injuries, a couple of minor illnesses, and Covid, and they’ve all taken forever to get better. I’m in my mid-60s, but the slow recovery rate is making me feel ancient.

Thank you all for the interesting replies. I certainly don't feel so alone now.

I used to think I was old in my 60s but now in mid 70s realise I should not have wasted time worrying because looking back I wasn’t old at all. The pity is I am now but am still able to get around , walk a few miles and enjoy reasonable health snd have a lot to be grateful for.

At age 43. 6mths after our mum died my sister visited. She burst into tears at the sight of me. Said I looked so 'different'. Well I knew I did, I could see how much Id aged in my mirror.
Then, a rapid deterioration this last 2 yrs because of traumatic time and illness. Its very upsetting but I suppose better than the alternative.

For me it was around 65. I first started having pain in my joints which affected my mobility really badly. This I believe showed in my face, how I stood and tried to walk. I lost weight and started looking frail. Then I caught covid, lost my husband, had to deal with all that while struggling with terrible pain 24/7. After hip replacement that pain has totally gone but still having issues with my spine....I have stenosis with osteoarthritis this means I'm very stooped, I have gained weight and I feel depressed with all that has happened the last few years. Now been told I'm anemic and waiting to find out why. I hate this aging process it makes me miserable and that shows I my face I'm sure!!!😬

Apart from migraines which I have suffered from since Primary School I have always been pretty robust. Then I retired at 60 and it all hit the fan! Gout, breast cancer, high blood pressure, skin cancer, two partial knee replacements, injured shoulder, emergency removal of gall bladder… jeez.

Grantanow Fri 17-Feb-23 23:39:28

At 60 I began to notice some muscular weaknesses.

I think we're all different. I was much younger looking and more lively at 60 than I was at 50. But things started to decline from 65 and even more so from 70. Now reached 73 and I keep having more things going wrong.

Cabbie21 Sat 18-Feb-23 08:58:14

I don’t know about looks, because I avoid looking in the mirror, but I began to feel older after reaching 75. Slowing down, more aches and pains, tired more quickly,

When I had my cataract done 3 weeks ago and saw myself clearly in the bathroom mirror.

Ditto. I found that I had the occasional grey hair, and had previously thought I had none!

Honestly we all change as we age. No good beating yourself up about it - just go with the flow!

Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror, and think "that can't be right".
