Wonder when you first noticed you were aging quickly

When I was in my late fifties I looked very young for my age and felt great. Over the last two years I seem to have aged dramatically. I am early 60s. I just don't look like I did back then and feel like I have changed such a lot in a short period of time and this has affected my confidence. My husband is very kind and reassuring but it does worry me. I have had more of my fair share of difficulties and bereavements during this time so wonder whether this can accelerate aging. Its mainly looks wise at the moment, my skin and hair are terribly dry and lots of wrinkles appearing. I just wondered if others started to age quicker around this age or if any of you have any useful advice. I am really very cross with myself for being so vain as I do have a lot of other things in life to be grateful for.

At about 55 I noticed everything was going "south" 🙄
... even my knees! It was the less defined knees that 'got' me.

When I had my cataract done 3 weeks ago and saw myself clearly in the bathroom mirror.

Yeah😂 same here.
Am 57 now and nothing is a good as just 3 years ago, I blame the pandemic for my worry lines.

When the list of ailments on the travel insurance started to increase!

Same here. I am 64 and over the last year I have noticed lines on my face, drooping jowels, hair getting thinner, poorer eyesight, sore knees and back, less energy and catching colds and minor ailments lot more. It's the first time I have ever actually noticed these things so maybe I just haven't been looking in the mirror and paying attention up till now. And as it is quite depressing I think I shall continue not looking the mirror as much and just make the most of what I have left!! The alternative is not an option!

When I noticed people were overtaking me when I was out walking. I used to be a fast walker but now I have sore hips.

When I lost my hair through alopecia. Bald and elderly is not a recipe for looking good.

Op thank you, I almost started a thread last week.
During covid 20/21, I lost over 3 stone in weight,.
I have put a stone back on , so now a healthy (for me) size 12.
But as they say if you lose wait after certain age (64 this year,) it shows in your face and that is exactly what has happened to me.
Last july I suffered Minoca heart attack and had covid at same time.

I now feel fit and heathly go to the gym twice a week.

But next wekend have a big family wedding and feeling quite upset and unsure of myself.
Want to chicken out.

Family that will be at the wedding , I have not seen since 2016.
I know that they will be shocked when they first set eyes on lines and wrinkles me and I dread their reaction.

A reaction that I have already experienced from an accidental meeting at the gym of some one hadn't seen for over 10 years.

Weight not wait!

For both my husband and me it was 75 until then we were both fit and in reasonable health. After 75 we had several illnesses and look much older. We both agree 75 was a turning point and not in a good way smile

MawtheMerrier Fri 17-Feb-23 15:37:39

I would say around 60-62 when I looked at some pictures of a family day out and wondered who the fat old Babuschka in the corner was.
Then I realised .
And it’s been downhill ever since sadsad

Looks wise - late 40’s.
Aches & pains. - late 50’s.

I used to look young for my age, could always get away with being 10 years younger. But at 59 I now look every year of it.
Oh well.
I’m still alive & that’s all that matters.

I've never gone along with this 'people say I look 10 years younger' business - they're hardly going to say yes you look your age!

Last week at my dance class we were discussing leg warmers - remember those, Jane Fonda in the 80s? The person I was talking to was 58 and I said, oh at 68 I'm 10 years older than you - she replied 'I'd never think of you as being near 70'.

Well, it hit me like a sledgehammer!

What I look like and how old I look is irrelevant, what threw me was that up until then I'd never thought of myself as 'someone being nearly 70'

But of course at 68, I am!! shock

LRavenscroft Fri 17-Feb-23 16:31:39

Do you really think it is being vain or perhaps you are just caring about yourself as you should?! My hair started to thin in my mid sixties and I needed 8 hours sleep now going to be at 10. Can't stuff my face or be off my head anymore as the indulgence is not worth the after suffering. My tolerance levels flew out the window and are now narrowed down to a few select individuals and places. I can't watch a lot of programmes on main stream telly anymore as they irritate me and really need to watch what I eat to remain 'comfortable'. I have cataracts and find it hard to recall certain words at times. I am in my mid sixties but I am still a bright and breezy free spirited individual (or so I think but there again I don't care what other people think!)

At 50 I started a new job where I was the oldest employee. They treated me kindly but I was seen as a “mum” figure to many.
The wrinkles appeared, my back started giving me pain, and by early 60’s I was tired by the end of each week - could not wait for Friday to come around.
Now I have given up my job and life is more leisurely and although I don’t look younger my energy levels are better.

Lyndylou Fri 17-Feb-23 17:15:08

Getting a passport photo at age 55. Tears were definitely shed. I had an update photo 10 years later but I took than one more in my stride for some reason.

Marydoll Fri 17-Feb-23 17:17:22

I have always looked younger than my age and was quite smug about it.

That is until recently. I have been very unwell and had a spell in hospital. I looked in the mirror the other day and saw an elderly, tired looking old lady. 😭

MrsKen33 Fri 17-Feb-23 17:19:26

My dark hair went grey in my sixties but I rather liked it and I didn’t look old as my face was fine. After Covid I realised I had far more wrinkles on my face, so I feel older now.

dragonfly46 Fri 17-Feb-23 17:25:49

I must be lucky. I am constantly told I don’t look 76 and I was even propositioned recently! Needless to say I told him I was very happily married!
