I’ve had great luck with Country Collection over the years. Their clothes are perfect for us more mature ladies who want classic, well-made pieces. Plus, they’re designed right here in the UK, so you know you’re getting quality. I highly recommend them!

This thread is about 18 months old! Nevertheless, I expect we’re all still interested in fashion. Personally, I think the clothes you’ve linked to are very matronly and boring, but just my opinion…..

I would recommend watching 'mm personal styling' on YouTube. Choosing clothing often depends on finding items that suit your body shape rather than choosing to suit your age. There are a lot of great suggestions there that would suit the various different body shapes and most can be easily adapted for any age I think it is important to look modern whatever age you are and so much easier to do nowadays than in the past

Some things obviously can’t be worn when you’re older, but generally, I wear what I like, I hate neutrals and I dislike navy.
I’m a dress/ skirt person, East, Sahara Hush among my favourites. I cover up a lot of flesh, but always have, and I agree with the upper arm thing, definitely not for show.
If you like what you’re wearing, you’ll feel good, and that’s all that matters.

I sometimes watch vloggers on You Tube for a bit of inspiration too, these include Helen Mary Jo, Vanity and Me & My Over 50 Fashion Life. I tend to order clothes on line now as I don’t really enjoy traipsing around the shops looking for clothes anymore.

Liaise Sat 08-Apr-23 14:23:22

I wear various jeans, Hesford trousers from joules (hopefully more available soon), Richmond trousers from Boden, heritage jumpers from Crew. All these shops have a wide choice. Blouses from Boden and Marks. . Jerry Weber if you feel like spending a bit extra and Pure.

I think you said somewhere that you had begun to buy some basics, kittylester - so maybe start with a basic top and trousers in plain colours, then zoosh the outfit up with ?? a bright scarf or necklace and some jazzy trainers?
Some ideas on this Instagram account…… instagram.com/ootd_girls_club?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I tend to wear mainly jeans and a plain top, then add a jacket - denim jacket, biker jacket, long cardigan, type (not a navy blazer with gold buttons….) and often a scarf (not shiny, silky - often long and fringed) and / or some chunky jewellery, depending on what I’m doing. In the winter I wear boots, in the summer chunky sandals or trainers (last pair were white, but with leopard print sides and gold trim)

I don’t want to be controversial, but I think classic dressing can be ageing, because even classic items change over time, the cut, form, colours, collar, shape (particularly of trousers) and materials change. You can look great in a modern version of a classic item but it has to be in a modern shape to look modern. The French and Italians both buy far fewer clothes than we do, and update their classics every year.

hollysteers Sat 08-Apr-23 13:17:09

Have a look at Italian women on line, I like their style and not as conservative as the French.
Wear what you like, the more outrageous the merrier for me to wonder at when I’m out😁
But remember re earrings

So was I kitty - classic clothing isn’t the same as old fashioned or boring! It’s things that don’t date. Think about those sixties shift dresses - a classic style that still looks good today. I like classic, well cut clothing but I certainly don’t like boring clothes!

I've had them done Meryl. I found it really helpful.

I'm summer but I expect you could all tell that from ny sunny disposition. grin

I am not really a classics type Norah. I put it down to being young in the 60s.

silverlining48 Sat 08-Apr-23 12:49:57

I am 74 and wear similar clothes to my dd (though in a bigger size. shock)
I don’t think it’s possible to buy clothes for ‘older’ women, we all wear much the same styles.
I wish you well kitty, enjoy.

Tailored classics never go out of style, perhaps begin looking to classic clothing. Good cuts will always be in style, lasting in your closet for decades.

Kitty
Have you thought about having your colours done.
It really can work.

harrigran Sat 08-Apr-23 09:14:17

I wear a lot of leggings/jeggings with tunic tops and ankle boots and I will be 77 in a few weeks.
Last summer I bought cropped jeans from Crew and wear them with polo shirt and V neck jumper and trainers.
Age is just a number, I am now wearing clothes I couldn't afford when I was young.

I go walking with an 82 year old friend who always looks great in jeans and trainers. I told her I was trying to imagine my MiL ever wearing jeans (or even "slacks") MiL had three crimplene dresses that she had worn in rotation for years. DD and I seem to wear very similar clothes and she's just sent me a photo of 10 year old GS2 wearing a jumper and jeans that anyone of the three of us might go out in.

AreWeThereYet Fri 07-Apr-23 20:26:26

GSM Feel free to disagree 🤣 People should wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. I answered the OP rather than telling her she should do something different.

kittylester Fri 07-Apr-23 18:25:57

Think that's what I meant by nuances I think, casdon.

Casdon Fri 07-Apr-23 18:03:10

The beauty of finding a good blogger is that they have done the hard work for you though. They recommend brands you haven’t heard of, put things together in ways you wouldn’t think of, wear new shapes that you hadn’t thought to try even if you knew they were out there - basically, they give you ideas, and help you keep your style fresh.
If you’re a classic dresser it’s easy to stick with exactly what you always have, but it’s also nice to have a bit of fun and branch out now and again - I think so, anyway.

M0nica Fri 07-Apr-23 18:00:20

Mrs Exeter doesn't exist anymore, clothes are not designed for any given age group.

I was shopping in the supermarket to day and there was a little round older lady wearing one of the brightly coloured abstract patterned shirt dresses that seem to be in this year with mid blue baseball boots , and she looked great. I admit, it was not a look I would go for, not my style, but I am capable of admiring style on other people, even if it is not my style.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Apr-23 16:54:09

I don’t like to disagree AWTY, but searching for clothes for over 60s is depressing. I wear the sort of clothes now, in my 70s, that I wore in my 40s - I have never been a fan of baring acres of flesh except on the beach and the styles that suited me then still suit me now.

AreWeThereYet Fri 07-Apr-23 14:56:48

Do a search for 'clothes for over 60s' on Google or YouTube and probably lots will come up.

I like looking at blogs - I look for people my shape, and if possible, my colouring, and just look at how they put things together. You don't have to copy their style, but often they find different jacket shapes, skirt shapes, dresses, shoes, scarves, trousers, and put them together in ways most/some of us may not think of. No different to people watching really. One of my favourite dresses I bought as a result of seeing one on a blog - mine isn't exactly the same dress but the style is almost the same. Just gives you some ideas for things to look for in shops/catalogues. I live mainly in coloured jeggings (M&S)/jeans, but I also have some nice skirts, dresses, jackets for going somewhere nice for lunch or dinner if I want to dress up, especially in the Summer.

Trust your instincts kitty. Mail order items you can return easily allow relaxed trying on at home with different shoes or accessories. I’ve learned not to buy anything ‘oversized’, fashionable for the young ones I just look heavier! Pick colours you know suit you, enjoy trying on, send photos to your daughters or friends you think always look comfortable in their clothes. You’ll soon build confidence. Good luck.

Caramme Fri 07-Apr-23 12:37:03

Go for whatever you feel attracted to, and in which you are comfortable. My only reservation would be to avoid those ageing sage greens, mucky blues and muddy browns that so many older people wear, almost as if they are trying to merge into the background, and which drain all the colour and life from a face.
Good luck. I hope you have lots of fun trying new styles and colours.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Apr-23 12:01:14

Perhaps if you say it a different way?
