Poor quality clothing

Is it because of Brexit that you can't get decent clothes anymore?

I'm mid 60s and love fashion but it's a chore trying to buy anything decent. Any ideas for decent quality fashionable clothing (not mutton dressed as lamb) that hide the tum and upper arms ?
Years ago Marks & Spencer would have been reliable for us ladies of a certain age who wanted quality clothes. Everything now is made of dreadfully cheap material.
Oh and what about shoes that come in half sizes ?

I really like Uniqlo and Camper for boots

I use Toast, Boden,Jaegar on Marks but am careful, Seasalt ,Hobbs and Hush.. A lot of their dresses are elasticated waisted and quite full-skirted even handkerchief bottomed. White stuff I am selective and send so much back I know my Evri lady as a friend.I find often if you find a good style the material is chewed bamboo or something odd.
I have the half-size thin-foot problem and look at Gabor, Carvella, Josepf Siebel and when I can afford them Kennel and Shumaker a German company. Some Russel and Bromley.
I have had two pairs of trousers from next they have elasticated backs so allow for my bulging tum.
Where do you buy good quality Woolen cardigans or jumpers?

I don’t want classic WWM2 I want something a bit more stylish a bit more quirky than classic

Have a look at Hush, definitely not old.
Sizes on tops and T shirts are generous, Oliver Bonas has some nice well made niche pieces.

The White Company knitwear is good quality, I have to go up a size.

Good quality woollen goods can be had from House of Bruar but they come at a price. However they do have sales......

Madwoman11 Thu 13-Apr-23 18:52:36

Foxygloves I would never buy from Shein either. I find it difficult to get to stores due to disability. Shopping isn't easy for everyone.
I do order from John Lewis but my last order of expensive items arrived looking like rags.

TwiceAsNice Thu 13-Apr-23 18:57:41

I like M&S jeans and have just bought new ones which fit well and seem good quality the last ones I bought lasted several years. Their shoes also do half sizes and different widths, my feet vary in different styles from 3.5-4.5 .

I like some Boden but only buy in their sales as too expensive for me full price. I do think they T shirt quality is worse and price no cheaper .

Sea salt is nice and Joules but prices vary some expensive some not.

Celtic &Co are excellent quality, they have a good range, and do great knitwear, a lot of it is made in Ireland. I can no longer wear any wool as it’s too itchy for me, but they also have linen and cotton jumpers and cardigans. They only have one shop I think, which is a bit remote as it’s near Newquay, but I’ve never had a problem with returns. I also like the White Company, they have shops in a lot of cities so you can try on, and some lovely clothes. Neither are cheap, but are good quality.

TwiceAsNice Thu 13-Apr-23 18:58:10

Their not they

It’s all very well to quote all these shops but we don’t have any of them in our good sized town in fact I can only think of two in the nearby city and they are expensive shops
I do have to buy online but much prefer trying things on looking in a mirror etc and sending back is expensive
We used to have Italian styles at a market when it came to town but not any more

Likewise - that’s why I buy online.
Returns are usually free and I much prefer trying things on in my own bedroom rather than some pokey cubicle in a shop.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 13-Apr-23 19:02:48

You get what you pay for. Classic does not have to be boring. A well cut item in a good fabric will last and not date. If buying online, I buy little, carefully and rarely and only things that will last years. Being dressed in the latest throwaway fashion, as seen on the pop-up ads for cheap Chinese clothing on GN, is not the same as looking stylish,

Wyllow3 Thu 13-Apr-23 19:05:00

Oh, snap!

Quite happy with M n S and TU (Sainsburys) especially as they now have Seasalt and White Stuff options too. both online and collect nearby. I'm fed up with the denigration of M n S. Yes the quality isnt what it was but its well good enough for me and you have to remember they are in competition price wise and have to survive for those of us who can't afford designer clothing.

Wyllow3 Thu 13-Apr-23 19:06:54

Snap was for earlier M n S fan upthread!

You are right re Chinese stuff GSM often rubbish not like the pics and impossible to return or get the size right.

Primrose53 Thu 13-Apr-23 19:06:59

I like to look a bit different so tend to buy clothes by Masai, Hobbs and Gudrun Sjoden and Thought. I am very often stopped in the street and asked where I buy my clothes. I have a few White Stuff tops and a couple of Sea Salt but the latest Sea Salt catalogue just came and is dead boring.

Shoes and boots I buy from Moshulu (sliders and boots) trainers from Rieker, posh occasion shoes from Gabor or a small Italian shop. My fave boots are soft green leather embroidered ankle boots from Gudrun Sjoden.

I have also bought some lovely clothes in charity shops but never shoes or boots.

I buy a good pair of NYDJ and a cashmere sweater every Autumn .
It’s worth every penny, my boots are all reheeled if necessary at the end of Spring.
Summer is so easy, good quality white and navy Capri pants with linen tops.
I wear suede loafers usually in the summer.
I look to Zara and local boutiques for dresses and occasion wear.
I do keep my clothes for a long time, most styles I buy are classic.
I have a little black dress from Jaeger that’s 25 years old and still going strong.

I buy some of my clothes, particularly casual stuff from Poetry which specialises in quality fabrics.

Tbh most of my clothes are casual these days.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Apr-23 19:12:42

And yes I have clothes that are years old. At the moment I am wearing a pink cashmere cardigan over a silk blouse, both of which I wore to work. I left work 17 years ago, so they are probably over 20 years old.

I buy DH jumpers from House of Bruar but never think of them for myself. Thanks for you both reminding me.

NYDJ’s are brilliant, totally agree good fitting jeans and cashmere sweater can take you to 90% of events 👍🏻

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 13-Apr-23 20:26:16

NYDJ are brilliant, but I’ve had mine for years and they’re all still going strong.

I'm reluctant to buy clothes on line these days, with so much tat out there, often made in China, which when (or even if) delivered, bears little resemblance to the pictures in the advert. Just Google some of the independent reviews of many of these manufacturers and you'll find horror stories galore. Quality clothing is still available if you shop around, but you may have to pay a premium price for it. I don't mind that, provided I get what I'm paying for.

Nana56 Thu 13-Apr-23 22:04:47

I like seasalt, weird fish, white stuff and fat face. For shoes I usually try hotter as come in half sizes and various widths.
I usually buy when on special offer.

Wyllow3 Thu 13-Apr-23 23:04:03

Landsend are good for casual clothes, rather standard stuff tho some nice linen things..

....but what I found great in Landsend are their swimming costumes. Great shaping, great choice, comes in long length which I like for good bum coverage, and great looking.

Like the clothes from Joules! All made in China but the labels and look imply that they are made in the UK. Ghastly padded gilets and jackets more suited to fishermen.

I buy from Seasalt, White Stuff, Cotton Traders and M&S.
Today I have ordered a rather pretty Monsoon dress from QVC. I used to buy a lot from Monsoon, but we don't have a branch near us any longer.
As for half sizes in shoes, I found that even our local shoe shop doesn't have many. I tend to stick to Sketchers shoes and boots, their size 5 seems to fit me in all their boots and they do 5 1/2 in some styles.
