Have you got Just3words on your phone or a green bottle in the fridge?

If you have then have you ever needed them?
I went along to an evening to brush up on my CPR Defibrillator skill last night. The Air Ambulance volunteer mentioned both of the above.
I’m definitely going to list details of my blood group and medical history and pop it in the fridge but not so sure about the app. Part of me thinks why not ? Part of me is reluctant to put anything else on my phone that knows where I am.

On the face of it the green container seems a good idea, but wouldn’t the green sticker on the front door just highlight to burglars that an elderly person lives there, thereby making them a target?

Thanks folks for explaining it. I had genuinely never heard of it.

I was joking about the #smug gran. It's a serious business, as I well know, having had quite a few emergency trips to hospital. DH was initially so flustered, he couldn't think straight.
I now have a script for when he needs to get help for me.

When it was first started they were giving the tubs away in all sort of places I think you would probably have to apply for one now

BlueBelle Fri 21-Apr-23 22:03:00

Marydoll yes they do know it’s not just a individual thing to put it in the fridge it’s where you are told to keep it and also you have a sticker to put on the inside of your entrance door to remind them they see it as they shut the front door so two reminders

I can only find three Lions groups in Scotland and none near me.
I'm sure there are more.

Kitty, that is a brilliant idea!

I agree the green container is a good idea, but would the emergency services know to look in the fridge?
I have never heard of it. Is it an English initiative?

That's the point really, Mary. If you have the Sticker on your door they look in the fridge.

The point about fridges is that they often withstand fires etc.

I have found What3words really handy for deliveries to relatives in the middle of countryside - no house numbers.

I read about the Green Bottle scheme just yesterday. Looks like a really good idea and will be doing it both at home and for my mum.

There are some in Scotland, they’re worldwide, my Dad was a Lion.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 21-Apr-23 21:15:16

No Lions around here that I’m aware of either. Also Scotland. I have the app but hadn’t heard of the fridge thing, which sounds like a good idea.

Claretjan Fri 21-Apr-23 21:13:15

I'm in the Scottish Borders and have never heard of the Lions. Maybe it's an English thing.

The great fact is paramedics know where to look (in the fridge) if you were unconscious and lived alone like I do

PamelaJ1 Fri 21-Apr-23 20:48:10

Marydoll you have obviously already thought ahead but for those home alone it wouldn’t work unless the patient was able to communicate.
I’m definitely going to get a couple.
Then I can be smug too😂

Jaxjacky Fri 21-Apr-23 20:24:37

I have what3words on my phone and know about the container.

The lions is a very well established voluntary organisation that does very good works in all walks of life I m amazed
you ve never heard of them I think every town has a branch

Yes, I'm in Scotland though. Honestly not familiar with that organisation, and considering I've worked in the newspaper industry all my life, I'm surprised at that, as I knew most of the community groups in the areas I worked.

No Lions in my area in Glasgow, as far as I know.

I don't have a green bottle, but all my medical details, including meds, consultants and CHI number are pinned to the notice board in the kitchen.

On the occasions, I have had to go to hospital, DH has handed it to the paramedics. The have commented that this info made their job so much easier.

Recently, I was called in the early evening to say that a bed had been found for me in the Cardiology unit and I was to bypass A&E and go straight to the ward.
The admitting doctor asked if by any chance I knew my CHI number as there were no details regarding my admission. I handed him the sheet of medical info, which I keep updated. Sorted!

#smug gran! wink

I have what three words but I've never used it yet. The one time I would have liked to I couldn't access the app because I only had one hand free at the time (dont ask). smile

Marmight Fri 21-Apr-23 19:19:08

I have the What3Words app. Ive used it once, facetiously, when my purchasers wanted the exact location of my oil tank in a garden smaller than a postage stamp.
Seriously, I’ve no doubt of its usefulness in a crisis. Not sure about the green bottle thing. Must investigate.

I have a green bottle in the fridge but it contains a rather nice wine …

😂😂

BlueBelle Fri 21-Apr-23 18:46:17

It’s NOT a bottle it’s a small white tub with a green lid and inside is your form with your medical info on
I m surprised no one’s heard of it I did it for my mum and dad and they died 11 years ago so been around at least 15 years I did mine around the same time and add or subtract information as you go along

Callistemon21 Fri 21-Apr-23 18:33:37

Wouldn't it be fiddly and quite difficult to get a message out of a bottle?

Ann001 Fri 21-Apr-23 18:32:03

I have What3words and used it once to direct the recovery vehicle, really accurate. I also have the Lions green tub, yes it comes with the stickers. As I live on my own I also have a key safe, very useful when I lock myself out 😂
My bottle in the fridge is clear, tonic for the gin later 😜

Callistemon21 Fri 21-Apr-23 18:20:40

I've never heard of this.

A friend and her husband were very active in The Lions, I'm surprised she hasn't told us all about it. I'll ask her 🙂

I think the bottle in my fridge is brown tonight.
