Microwave Mishap!

Help!

I put a mug of milky cocoa in the microwave, forgetting I had removed the glass timetable earlier to wash it. Mug and contents tipped all over.

Mopped it all up, DH lifted microwave and we wiped it all underneath.

Tentatively tried it, seems to be working ok.

But worried about the milk spillage. It will soon smell won’t it? Should we put some plain water in it to slush out any residual milk, and then let it dry out thoroughly?

Anyone else done anything similar?

I would just wash it out thoroughly with a damp cloth and hope for the best!

Haven’t done that - yet!

If we’re concerned about smells in the microwave we put some lemon juice or pieces of lemon in a bowl of water and cook for about 3 minutes . Leave to cool and repeat. Not sure I’d ‘rinse’ it but then as long as it dries can’t see it would hurt. Try not to worry. The microwave will be fine.

I agree with the lemon. I put half a lemon in my microwave periodically and the other half in my fridge

Wipe it out thoroughly with bicarbonate of soda dissolved in hottish water.

- cooking lemon in the microwave is a goof idea

I would try and dry it inside as much as you can and adding the lemon piece is a good idea. It must dry thoroughly so keep the door open and your fingers crossed.

No point in crying over spilt milk.

Definitely try the lemon.

I think Calendargirl's problem is that milk might have got into the works or the inaccessible part of the microwave. Perhaps you should just cross that bridge when you come to it. Wait and see if it starts to smell.

My microwave doesn't have a rotating turntable. The insides are all sealed off and it is easy to clean.

I love the thought that your microwave has a timetable in the middle

Calendargirl Mon 01-May-23 10:46:18

Or even a ‘turntable’ BlueBelle.

Good spot.

😂

Thanks for all advice. As JackyB says, it’s the thought of sour milk languishing in the microwave’s insides and smelling that bothers me, the smell of gone off milk anywhere is awful.

Have got a lemon, am going to tackle it when I’ve drank my mug of elevenses (another milky drink, but coffee this time!)

My first micowave, back in early 70's was just a large space. I was told that something hidden in its revolved. Wonderful, could place large, oblong casserole dishes, etc in there. Lasted the family usage for a good twenty years. Then one of the children slammed the door shut so hard and with something it he way, it shattered the glass in the door. Manufacturers were surprised that it had still be working, and could not supply a replacement door. So, purchased a new one, but now ALL had those revolving turntables. I was told that the public liked to see the food moving round and did not trust it was safe if they could not see that.

Put up with those until last year, had my kitchen done and found that the big boxes without turntables are back in fashion. Delighted as it is so very easy to keep really clean, even with the occasional exploding food!!

Stale, spilt milk has a disgusting and lingering smell. In my first year in my flat I knew I needed to replace the existing carpets but was not sure whether to have it all re-carpeted or have laminate as I had in my previous house . Decision easily made when I knocked over a lovely banana milkshake I had just made. Despite mopping the carpet immediately, and then steam cleaning the area, the smell lasted well over a week, although every day, I steam cleaned it and used a carpet shampooer on it. Laminate for me.

ANyway, back to that microwave, yes lemon is good as is baking soda. Indeed, keep a small amount of soda in a dish in the microwave when it is not being used for the next couple of weeks will also help to prevent that horrible milk smell.

Wow! Franbern! Horrified to hear that your "microwave was still working", even with a shattered door. That means it was leaking radiation, which is extremely harmful to your health. Microwaves are designed to boil water, and as the human body is around 60% water, you get the message. Just as an aside, some microwaves leak a very small amount of radiation anyway, and for this reason, we shouldn't stand up close in front of one watching out food go around, as prolonged exposure like that can actually cause cataracts in our eyes. No, I'm not kidding. Check it out. One easy safety tip.. I regularly check if my microwave is still safe to use, i.e. not leaking, by putting my mobile phone inside and closing the door. DON'T power up the microwave when you've done this. Then use another phone to call your mobile. If it rings, get rid of the microwave as it has become a health hazard, as the compartment is no longer secure. So yes, a very handy appliance to have in the kitchen, and we use ours a lot, but they do come with a health warning, as they are a radiation source.

I think Franbern meant the manufacturers were surprised the microwave was still working after so many years. I don’t think she attempted to use it with a shattered door, she was just seeing if it could be replaced.

I'd go with the bicarb solution which I also use when regularly cleaning the fridge. It's the best way of getting rid of the smell.

Thanks, Calendargirl. See what you mean. I may have taken it too literally, in which case apologies to Franbern. No harm in a bit of a general "health warning" though.

Just an update, a week on from my mishap.

Next day, I put some hot water plus lemon juice down under the turntable, it came out clear. I then heated up a bowl of water and lemon juice in the microwave for a few minutes, and wiped it all out well, leaving the door open for a good while.

It seems to be working fine, and touch wood, no nasty smell!

Thanks for all advice.
