Kinship care - can anyone help with advice?

My Adult daughter and her partner (I’ll call him J) have just taken J’s nephew (aged 4) out of a dreadful situation.

Without divulging details a couple of weeks ago Js brother had been arrested for neglect and has been told he can not see child til after his court case (mother of child has never been on scene)

J’s mum has had the boy for the last couple of weeks but is in her 60s and still working/paying mortgage and feels unable to keep the boy at hers so DD And J have stepped in to take him.

The boys father had promised to pay them some monies each week to help with care but has now turned round and said he’s not going to and basically disappeared off the scene.

They have spent this week getting the runaround from DHSS, social services and CAB who are all passing the buck to each other.

They have been told they cannot get kinship allowance until the fathers case goes to court which apparently is going to be at least a year away.

They are at their wits end and there has been a lot of tears this week. (They already have 4 children of their own)

Can anyone help or give advice or point us in the direction of anyone/services that could help?

Might be worth starting with this. Good luck.

I posted a long response that disappeared

I’d advise legal advice from a solicitor specialising in family law. The criminal proceedings may delay public law proceedings concluding. You don’t say if care proceedings are planned or whether the la is trying to avoid care proceedings. A solicitor would clarify that. Local authorities sometimes try to work in what the call a voluntary basis, that avoids care proceedings. Proceedings help the child by preventing drift and ensuring a Judge has independent oversight.
Kinship carers should be assessed supported and funded like foster carers, it’s not unknown for relatives caring for a child to be parties to the proceedings with the Court recommending the l.a pay legal costs
