Trading in a car

Can you not beat the dealer down a bit? I point blank refused their trade in offer and asked to see the manager. I was prepared to walk away unless I got either a better trade in price or an increased spec included in the new car.
That worked well I got both.
The other thing to hear in mind re private sales is that you might have to wait a while for a new car to be delivered. If you sell too soon you could be left without transport for a while. I had to wait for my new VW but got an agreement that the dealer would honour the trade in price even if I clocked up thousands of miles while I waited.

If it’s a cheap car sell privately EBay it similar for cash, we have sold 2 through We Buy Any Car very satisfactory the last car was £2000 more than dealer offered.

When my daughter inherited her late dad's car, she sold her 12y.o. VW Polo to Motorway and got a much better price than she expected. I can't remember the figure now but she was happy with it.

We used CarWow to sell my VW - got nearly as much for it as we paid 6 years ago!

As a postscript- I suppose it depends on what you’re trading in and what you’re taking out. Many years ago, I drove a classic car and was offered less than £2K as a trade-in. I was beyond miffed!!!
A local chap heard I was selling it and offered me 8x what the garage had offered. Their loss. As Julia Roberts would say ‘big mistake, huge!’
A few weeks later the garage rang suggesting they might increase their offer a little. I couldn’t wait to tell them I’d already purchased the same car as they had, albeit in a better colour.

I used ‘we-buy’ to sell my late DH’s vehicle - a 4x4 twin cab he used to cart the dogs and his fishing stuff around. The price offered is never the price paid, but I was more than aware of that and quite happy with the outcome. You’ve got to be honest about scratches and slight dings! I didn’t want to transfer his vehicle to my name and stump up for additional insurance and have to use it/keep it on the road for however long. In fact, the refunds of road tax and insurance made up for what ‘we buy’ knocked off their offer.
I bought a new car (2yrs old) in February and was pleased with their trade-in price on my car - again, I didn’t want to be lumbered with 2 cars on my drive, with twice the liability.

My husband sold Dad's car through this website, for double the price that webuyanycar.com offered.
They ask for several photos of the car beforehand and suggest a price.
They put it out to auction and let you know the best price achieved.
If you're not happy they'll put it out to auction again.
If you agree they come and collect the car, transfer the money into your account at that point and don't leave until you've seen it cleared.
He'd certainly use them again.

I am getting a new car in September, the dealership gave me a quote for trade in but daughter recommended I use a company called Motorway., she had a good experience with them. I went to them for a quote but they only offered me £500 more than dealership and that’s not guaranteed.
But being recently widowed I don’t want the stress of selling privately so may go with the dealership.

Then TBH I don’t think a few grand less than you would like on the trade in will matter, will it?

My last car was purchased from Available Car.com, I traded my old car in for a similar car that was under a year old at the time (big saving on buying a brand new one). It’s true you don’t get the best price for your old car but then I didn’t want the hassle of people coming round the house or having to deal with time wasters. I was satisfied with the deal and have been very happy with my car.

From what I hear, we buy any car are quick and easy but don't give top prices. Depends what you want really

I think the web based sites offer lots until they actually see you then they start nocking money off for almost anything. Do you have a regular garage that you use? Often they have customers asking about reliable cars.

Webuyanycar offered me a pittance, even worse than trade in. I sold it privately, (just stuck a sign in the window when it was parked.)

What Oopsadaisy said - don’t buy brand new.

We’ve sold 2 cars on Face Book, they paid us the price we asked.

Sell it privately - it’s free to sell on Gumtree. Trade-ins are always very low.

Bear in mind that as soon as you leave the forecourt you wipe thousands of pounds off the value. Better really to buy a 2/3 yr old car.
