Do you tip your hairdresser?

I used to tip but mine had a tip jar for all the staff and they shared it with everyone but I moved to a new area few weeks ago and i didn’t at new place just said thanks but I always give mine a nice box of biscuits at Christmas because everyone else gives them chocolates and they used to say that they enjoyed them with cuppa

My hairdresser is great ( new one) and I tip yes everytime, she is salon owner the only one I truly trust to cut my hair always give 3 pound extra every 6 weeks

. I do tip my new hairdresser because they don’t charge as much as others.
However, be careful about paying with a card. I have noticed that many restaurants add a service charge to the bill and although it is written in small print somewhere, so you maybe unaware you are paying. Moreover, it is difficult to ask the person who is with the paying device to remove it if you were not happy with the service.

My hairdresser has her own salon on the side of her house. I go every six weeks for cut, colour and blow dry and don’t tip. I used to tip the young apprentice who washed my hair but now my hairdresser does it all. I think the idea of giving her a bit extra at Christmas is a good idea and I shall do that in future.

I’ve had the same lovely girl seeing to my hair and my husbands for the last twenty years, and I don’t tip her. I do give her a £50 Space NK voucher at Christmas though because I know she’ll spend it on herself!

But now OH cuts my hair and I cut his so we buy each other a coffee when we are out.

My hairdresser is my son in laws’s cousin and comes to my DD’s home to cut all our hair (myself, DD and 3 GDs). She will only just allow us to pay her as it is family! We always club together to buy her a really nice present at Christmas as she does a great job, is very patient with the little ones and saves us (especially me!) the inconvenience of trips to a salon. I am indeed grateful as I hate having my hair ‘done’ and having to make inconsequential chit chat for a few hours!

I first went to my hairdresser about twenty years ago when I saw a girl with exactly the cut I wanted and it looked really well cut so I asked her where she went. I always tipped. Eventually my husband who has curly hair started having his hair cut there too.

Maybe ten years later she left that salon and went "mobile". By this time I knew her well. She comes every seven weeks, cuts and blows my hair and cuts my husband's for a ridiculously cheap price. Generally she gets either a box of allotment goodies and/or homemade jam or pickle as a tip these days and I bake her a Christmas cake in December. I presume that she is happy as she hasn't raised our prices in a decade.

I have grown my hair longer as I could no longer afford to have it cut every six weeks. I don’t tip but that is because I can’t afford it.

We tip all service people - even those who bring the post. My hairdresser is the owner, and she has no staff, but I tip her, although I only get a wash and cut. Also, @eazybee, what does tipping have to do with the menopause?

I had a mobile for the past 9 years and she was well priced but has moved area, sadly. This year, I’ve returned to salon prices and am astonished at the cost. £160 for cut/highlights but no blow dry (I don’t like it!).

I will not be tipping on top of that cost and look for a less expensive option.

Definitely tip 15% but not the owner unless they visit you at home. Mine charges 30 plus 10 for driving here and I add 10. Well deserved £50.

£1 to the stylist, 50p for the hair washer…..always have done same amounts for the last 20 years! May not seem much but it all adds up doesn’t it? Now prices have increased I’m considering stopping even that as it seems a bit patronising to tip at all.

My hairdresser rents a chair in the salon so works for herself. I’ve been going to her for years, following her from a first then a second salon and consider her a friend. Having my hair done is a big luxury for me as it’s become very expensive. I save up to have my hair cut and highlighted and don’t go as often as I should. I don’t tip because I can’t afford to. Though reading how many of you do I now feel guilty about it.

I don't tip my gorgeous female barber. I'm not being sexist or anything, I'm married to her.

My hairdresser and his wife own the salon and don’t employ anyone else, the first time I went he refused a tip saying he would prefer me to make another appointment, now been going for 24 years so I kept my side of the bargain and then some 🤣

I think it depends how often one goes.I go every week wash and blow dry so I don’t tip every week but I do when I have colours or perms(every 3/4 months).I also buy Xmas presents (not massively expensive ones but something).it’s easy for people to say they tip when they only go every few months and not every week.

Since I Haven’t been to a hair dresser since 1965 the question doesn’t arise.
However this morning I was trying to put rollers in the back of my hair when I had to ask my daily to help.

And we tip in restaurants but not where you have to go to the bar to order - don't really know why not?

My hair is roughly £80 a time , she rents a chair in a salon and is self employed. I don't tip . I don't feel bad about it as she is always off on holiday and recently spent 6 weeks in Australia and was booking another holiday a few days after her return.

I don't tip the salon owner, but do tip others who wash or whatever. At the moment I have a hairdresser who comes to my home and don't tip her but she is moving and I don't know where I'll go.

I’ve been going to my lovely hairdresser for over twenty five years…I always used to tip her, and didn’t stop even when she and another girl bought over the business and became the owners.
More recently, there are only three or four stylists and no juniors, which I like as it means my hairdresser does everything from start to finish. Since lockdown, I really don’t ever have cash in my purse, so I now buy her a little something maybe every other visit, such as a bottle of wine, at Easter or Halloween, I buy buns or a cake, most recently I gave her a bunch of flowers, which she absolutely loved. I always tip generously in restaurants etc, but found the business of tipping someone that I’ve known for so long, and visit every five/six weeks, very awkward, but I feel this is a much more pleasant way to show my appreciation of her and she seems to love getting unexpected surprises too.

My hair cut is expensive. I don't tip my hairdresser as he is the owner of the business but I do tip the young girl who washes my hair and does a quick head massage. I think they get paid almost nothing as apprentices.
