Coloured hair at 70

I'm 71 with hair dyed brown and I've no intention of letting it go grey.

I am a natural red head who used to have blonde highlights for years. I haven’t had any for several years. Ironically my friends think I go to the hairdresser as they admire the natural colour so much. Having been teased when at school as a ginger nut etc I now realise it was a gift now I am in my 60s.

I love my streaky silver hair. It suits me far better than the auburn brown I suffered most of my life.
Wish it was a bit thicker, though...

I'm 70, had my hair coloured, cut n styled yesterday and have every intention of carrying on until my hairdresser tells me otherwise. We always have a mini discussion before he starts on the colour and has lightened it gradually over the years to compliment changing skin tones, but it's still a mid golden /dark brown and shiny with the odd highlight.
My sister tells me she wouldn't wear jeans and leggings as tight as mine either but I tell her it's not her its me wearing them and my choice, same as our hair. Grey hair looks great on a lot of people too, but it's not for me- yet!

It is your hair and your choice. The only time I would feel like making a comment (and only if asked) would be a friend of 70 plus home colouring their hair black. Not a good look. Sounds like your hair compliments your skin and I am sure you look great.

I am 70 and I have my hair dyed a subtle rose gold/pink. My hair was dark brown, and I loved being a brunette. I don’t like being grey but having it dark isn’t an option because the grey shows so quickly. I get loads of compliments. You need to do what makes you happy and don’t be put of by others.

I think it also depends on the texture of your hair. Grey hair can grow through coarser and more wiry than your original colour hair.

I am not a fan of hair dyed a dark solid colour on older ladies, especially when it is short and in a old fashioned shampoo and set style. It looks so old fashioned. We used to call it helmet hair. You don't seem to see it so much anymore though

Some of the modern home dyes are really good. The one I use (medium blonde) gives me natural highlights where the grey/white parts of my hair come out lighter than the still darker parts. I do it myself but people generally think it is expensive highlights.

Three years to go until I am 70, but I enjoy having my hair colored. Purple. Not all of it, just some highlights. My natural grey and white look great with purple. The white bits take the color especially well.

I needed my roots done every five weeks but as I get older five weeks is no time at all and I was so bored waiting for the colour to take. I kept thinking of all the other things I could be doing. I still need it it but I’m out in about 25 minutes. And only £44 .

Natural grey isn't for everyone - it depends on your skin tone and hair quality. Some of us have almost transparent white hair! Which is why I'll continue to tint mine a medium/warm blonde with highlights, ad infinitum. And for the record, many celebs sporting 'grey' hair like Dame Mirren's bespoke platinum silver tint (and other similar subtle pastel tones) have their personal colour technicians to thank!

Your life your hair. I have my hair highlighted and paint my nails whenever I want to. Wear what I consider suits my shape/figure and really don’t care for people’s opinion as I buy my clothes (!)
I also don’t care to be considered a typical grey haired old lady! I’m nearly 73 but that’s just a number!
For what it’s worth - my granddaughter went through a stage of having her blonde hair coloured and it looked grey - fabulous!

My hair has been totally white since I was in my fifties. I have never really bothered having it coloured since. I am now 82

Lovely colour. It would be a travesty to dye that lovely hair, and imho wouldn’t look right. I think ladies often don’t take time to consider honestly whether their dyed hair still suits their face, in their determination not to go grey - mine simply didn’t, it looked very false to me and as though I was desperately trying to look younger. I see this ‘mismatch’ between face and hair colour a lot when out and about. One good thing to have come out of lockdown for me!

I still colour my hair at 71 because when it fades I look very washed out. I don't take it back to the dark colour which it used to be but to "deep medium blonde" which in reality is soft brown and more or less matches the colour of my hair where it isn't grey. My own hair had red tones and these still show a little and the grey makes it look slightly streaky and more natural.
I never managed to find a salon that didn't make it too dark and flat looking, but recently have had a visiting hairdresser who does exactly what I want and leaves me with enough colour to do my roots between visits. Sadly she has moved so I'll have to find another solution, possibly my daughter will be willing to do it for me.

I agree with what you say here!

My good friend has her hair coloured in her later 70s and looks lovely. I took fright when one of my daughters suffered a severe allergic reaction to hair dye and stopped colouring mine. I quite like my silver hair, luckily still thick and shiny. To me it seems ridiculous to set an age limit on colouring one’s hair.
My mother started telling me it wasn’t seemly to have long hair after I had my first child - aged 32 -band bullied me until I was expecting my third at 39 when I gave in and had it cut. I still regret that.

I’m 79 have did have dark brown hair I now have caramel dye and highlights. It seems to brighten my skin as well. I will keep colouring and makeup as long as I can. 😊

It's interesting that this subject comes up now when, at 76, and with practically 30 or so years with coloured hair behind me, I've finally decided to let my natural white and grey hair come through. Many people say they prefer my hair like this and that it 'makes me look younger' and that it 'softens my face'. Those who don't like it or are indifferent remain silent, I suppose. The most important thing is that I like it a lot, and have totally appropriated my new self. Let's be our own woman!

Yes, I do at 73, highlights four times a year, because half of what I have left has gone dark, whereas the other half is now grey.

I was a natural blonde but it’s gone silvery in recent years so I have some subtle highlights put in about every three months. I will always do so, I also paint my nails.. they’re a light blue at the moment!

I think you should do whatever floats your boat, it is nobody’s business but yours. I grew my colour out years ago because I hated having to colour my hair so often and I love my silver hair, but I have had a few people tell me that women my age should not have long hair. There will always people who think they can tell you what you should and shouldnt do……. Ignore them and just do what ever makes you feel good

I’m 68, nearly 69. I’ve always had dark hair then the grey started to come through. My hairdresser and I went through a long process of taking it to a platinum blonde which I love! I’ve had my brows and eyeliner tattooed and my lips plumped. I wear makeup. Last year I went for a boudoir photo shoot and got some amazing photos as a result. People never believe I’m
the age I am. Why should we not look
our best just because we’re getting older?!
