How do you make hot chocolate?

I often choose hot chocolate in a cafe at this time of year but I can't get it right at home.

Does anyone have any secrets?

I love a hot chocolate kitty .
and this one - from Ocado - is particularly good.

For one mug measure the milk in the mug, tip into a milk pan and whisk in 1-2 teaspoons of the hot choc mixture.
Take off heat just before it comes to boil.
Whisk till frothy on top. Enjoy.

Sorry, not advertising , I am sure it is available in other shops!

Hotel Chocolate velvetiser

Ask Santa for a Velvetiser (other hot drinks makers are available)

Perhaps buy the blend of chocolate your favourite cafe uses?

You could try stirring shavings from your bar of chocolate into milk while heating.
I know some ‘instant’ types have milk powder added and only need water.
Then there’s old-fashioned cocoa, always made with milk.

I guess it’s a bit of trial and error

The Velvetiser looks great, but only makes 2 small cups?

I make mine the old fashioned way, with cocoa powder and hot milk. I do use a milk frother though if I'm making for several people rather than just me.

I've also been given chocolate to make it with... that's good.

My daughter-in-law loves the velvetiser.

I was also going to suggest that too.
It will be a lovely gift.

Pan, milk, cocoa powder, sugar, spoon. Heat while stirring. Enjoy.

Heat the required milk and whisk in as much plain chocolate you like. Top with whipped cream if you are feeling indulgent.

We've thought about a velveteen but I'm not sure how much I'd use it.

I love Green and Blacks. Not too sweet and very smooth.
I make hot chocolate in the microwave. I warm the milk for 1 minute then add the powder before blasting it again.

I love my velvetiser. I get the Hotel Chocolat sachets, but also buy from Pendragon Drinks, who are cheaper and just as good.

mumofmadboys Sun 29-Oct-23 20:58:34

I like hot chocolate made with hot chocolate powder, boiling water and just a small amount of cold milk. I find it less rich.

The Velvetiser we were given was not big enough for the 2 big mugs we like to use so we gave it to DS.... We like Green and Blacks but recently bought Divine from Lidl's which was just as good and not sweet. We make it in a pan milk form one mug on the stove with the Hot Choc gradually mixed in with hot water; then we started to add sugar foolishly.... then bought some Carnation Evaporated Milk a couple of weeks ago which is gorgeous and just mix that with the choc powder in each mug, add boiling water and...... another recent addition... Muscovado sugar. I think we are on a very slippery slope....

Doodledog Sun 29-Oct-23 22:00:34

Yes, that's the downside of the Velvetiser - it only makes one mug at a time, so if you are making it for friends it takes a while.

Hot chocolate powder and boiled water chocolate squirty cream on top.

2 mugs whole milk ; 170g of 70% dark chocolate ; 1 - 2 tbspns brown sugar ; tiny pinch sea salt ; cinnamon and whipped cream (optional)

Heat milk until very hot but not boiling
Add salt and finely chopped dark chocolate
Let it melt and then whisk until smooth
Stir in sugar to taste
Reheat on low simmer but don't let it boil
Pour into cups, add dollop of cream and/or cinnamon
For thicker results, make ahead of time and then reheat
when cold.

Just choose some of my favourite chocolate, heat the milk (don’t let it boil) and melt the chocolate in it. Whisk until all the chocolate has melted. Delicious.

This is all making my sweet tooth itch grin. I try to limit hot chocolate to December, January and February, but I can see that I might have to dust off my Velvetiser before long if this keeps up.

I tried the pods with a coffee machine but not as good as the ‘old’ way. Overly sweet for one thing.

I generally find hot chocolate too sweet for my taste, but the local chocolatier, where we buy our Christmas chocolates and at other special times, makes the most divine hot chocolate mixture - but it is not cheap😮.

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-Oct-23 08:50:10

Whitewavemark2 - that's why I start from scratch as you can put in the right amount of sugar/honey or whatever.

In the hotel in Germany, the breakfast hot chocolate was a glass of very hot milk and a glassful of mixed dark and light chocolate buttons. It made delicious hot chocolate, but I’ve never made it that way at home.
