Any experience with this? The list of side effects seems massive. Is anybody happily taking it with good effect?

Very very swollen feet for me.
So much that when I took my shoes off the shape of them was still there for ages.
Changed to Felodipine and no trouble since.

I had a silent heart attack after taking only two Lifludomide tablets for RA. I only knew that I had a heart attack because I couldn't stop vomiting and was so ill, I was rushed to A&E. It was there they discovered it had affected my heart.
No-one could have predicted that.
You take your chance with medication, weighing up the pros and cons in the hope you will be OK and that you will benefit from it.
Twice I've had to stop different biologics, due to severe side effects.
Unfortunately I have had a number of scares like that, but have no choice, but to try.

Hubby takes it alongside other medication, no obvious side effects. But every prescription drugs will have a side effect to someone, you have to weigh up the benefits against the side effects. Personally I would try it for 3 months and keep a diary of how you are feeling.

Drugs work differently for different people. Just because one patient suffers bladder irritation, another may not. One person's failure can be another's success story.

Recently I have had to stop biologic injections, (£1000 per month) due to horrific side effects and them making me exxtremely unwell. However, for other RA sufferers it is a miracle drug. You never know until you try it.

Oh gosh yes I completely agree and i promise that I wasn't trying to be alarmist, just sharing my own experience which might be helpful to someone reading this

I took it for a few days in the summer, and one leg swelled badly. The other one was fine, which was strange. I rang the surgery and they prescribed Ramipril instead, which has been symptom free.

I have been taking it for several years, (can't remember what for now) but have had had no side-effects.

Wow! I had no idea bladder irritation could be a side effect I just hadn’t made the association. I’ve been known to get up to the loo up to 6 times a night for massive wees. So irritating. I always get up at least once. Twice is most common.

If you google Amlodipine and bladder problems you will see glammagran I had such a problem

Not at all sure this is helpful but one of our cats was on it. He never had swollen ankles despite the woeful state of his kidneys.

glammagran Sat 11-Nov-23 19:15:27

I’ve been on Amlodopine since June 2022. Prior to lockdown I did not have high BP. I’ve had no side effects but could be wrong as I do have very achy muscles and joints. But I’d only know if I stopped taking them.

ginny Sat 11-Nov-23 19:04:23

I’ve had no problems with it.

henetha Sat 11-Nov-23 18:46:32

I've been on Amlodopine for several years now so my blood pressure is always normal at checkups these days.
No side effects other than swollen ankles in hot weather.

I had avoided medication online forums because I reckoned that it would be mostly people who had problems who would post. This is why I thought seeking information as to experience from the Grans would be most useful for me. I've just taken the first tablet! Here goes...

I am so mad with my doctor for prescribing this medicine to me.

I took it for 6 weeks in conjunction with Ramipril which I have taken for years, my blood pressure went right down but I suffer from all sorts of side effects, including fainting spells, sometimes I can hear my own heartbeat so loud in my ears and recently disturbed vision in my left eye.

The doctor referred me to Specsaver for a thorough eye examination. I have stopped taking it hoping the side effects will go away in time.

Read patient online regarding this drug.

I have joined Slimming World, hoping to lose about 1 stone to bring my weight in healthy range so that I can get rid of all my medications for good.

Marydoll Sat 11-Nov-23 18:06:54

On both Rampril and Amlodopine for years, with no side effects. Unusual for me, because I ofter suffer severe side effects with other meds.
All meds have documented side effects. Unless you try them, you won't know!

Aveline Sat 11-Nov-23 17:46:06

maddyone I saw that grapefruit juice can lead to low BP if taken while on Amlodipine. Maybe I should just drink grapefruit juice instead if that works? Don't worry, I'm joking!

Whiff Sat 11-Nov-23 17:37:42

Should have said that's for high blood pressure. Take Flecainide for my heart and Apixaban a blood thinner had not side effects from them.

Whiff Sat 11-Nov-23 17:35:20

Aveline I was on it for about a year . Made my ankles swell and got painful then once I was diagnosed with paroxysm atrial fibrillation taken off it. Because of the swelling within a week my ankles back to normal and no pain. I do take Ramipril and been on it for years no side effects.

Blossoming Sat 11-Nov-23 17:33:47

I have been taking it for over 20 years in combination with several other drugs to control hypertension. I haven’t experienced any side effects and my blood pressure is now stable after serious health issues.

All of my drugs have long lists of nasty sounding side effects, mostly uncommon. As long as you feel Ok, are monitored and the drug is doing what it’s supposed to you should be fine but if you are at all worried please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

maddyone Sat 11-Nov-23 17:06:05

I’ve been taking Amlodipine for ten years, 10 mgs per day. No problems and they control my blood pressure. I did have swollen ankles after I started, only when walking, not all the time, but that settled after a while. If I walk a particularly long way, such as 20,000 steps in a day, my ankles will swell, but otherwise they don’t.
Don’t forget that you can’t eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice whilst on Amlodipine. It can make your blood pressure drop far too low so you keel over.

Scribbles Sat 11-Nov-23 16:52:49

I've been taking Amlodipine 10mg daily for more than 20 years. My BP is well controlled and I'm not aware of any side effects.
On the other hand, SO takes the same daily dose and his ankles often swell which his GP attributes to the Amlodipine.

swampy1961 Sat 11-Nov-23 16:52:39

I don't take them but DH does!! As with any medication I don't go looking for side effects until you have some!! Then check!!
Otherwise you would never eat, drink etc etc.

Aveline Sat 11-Nov-23 16:50:27

Thanks all. You've given me a good idea of what to expect. My BP shoots up very high but also goes down quite low. A happy medium might a hard to find.

BlueBelle Sat 11-Nov-23 16:46:13

I once took part in a blind trial for a herbal tablet not knowing whether you were taking the tablet or the sugar pill after the results came out we were sent the paperwork of results

The people noticing the most side effects which were mostly headaches, lose stomachs and even suicidal ideation were those taking the inoffensive sugar pill
😂
