Remaining anonymous?

Just curious, I haven't taken advantage of any meet ups but I am curious as to whether those who do remain anonymous? Using their GN name rather than revealing their real name . do some people wish to keep their identity to themselves?

I believe I may be the only person who posts under her real name. I may be wrong but I didn’t try to doctor it up for a clever handle. People know I’m from the US. Don’t imagine there will be any meet ups - but I would love to meet you! (Most of you 😂)
I yam what I yam!

The Gns I've met up with have been on first name terms - no idea what their surnames are and no need to know. Very nice people there are

It's not about the name, but the way you write, your expressions, punctuation, etc, and your opinions, etc.

A very good friend said she recognised me by my writing style!

Unfortunately welbeck even under a different name they would soon know it was me if I posted on the GM thread for example and said where I was from. The annoying thing is that the person who asked me if I was dragonfly46 was not the person on Gransnet but was a friend of hers so it could be anyone.

Post under a different name and maybe not say where you come from.. so that we can continue to benefit from your wisdom and friendship

You can hide those deliberately for a while, and then you reverse, and someone 'outs you' - lol.

I wish I had remained anonymous- I was very naive when I joined. Too late, ah well.

How lovely of you pascal30 I do still post from time to time on other threads but avoid those which describe what I am up to!

There is a forum under Meet-ups.

Goldieoldie15 Sun 19-Nov-23 09:57:47

Meet ups? What a great idea! But when where how?! Anybody with answers?

There are a few people here who know my name etc

Haven't met up though but would assume those are the people I likely would meet up with

Interesting reading , glad I started this thread!

It’s been first names with grans I have met and I always put my first name in an email or pm. As time has passed I’ve become less concerned about anonymity than when I joined, 9 or so years ago now. Im grateful for regular email contact with three Grans who along with a Gran from my area have offered invaluable support to get me through some of life’s challenges. I guess I’ve experienced the positives.

Having said all that there can be downsides to openness. That sounds scary dragonfly. flowers. Such a shame you feel restricted now.

welbeck Sat 18-Nov-23 23:26:54

just tell them your cover has been blown, and you need a new persona to continue operations.

welbeck Sat 18-Nov-23 23:25:29

dragon, could you ask GN to re-start with a new username perhaps.
i can understand your reluctance to reveal more.

It’s strange isn’t it. I am happy to meet up with Grans as all I have met are lovely. I always use my real first name in PMs but one day I was in a group and someone asked if I was dragonfly46. Since then I have been very reluctant to post anything about myself, so stopped posting on the GM thread and in soops as someone out there knows me but I don’t know them.

Thats a pity dragonfly. I wondered why you had withdrawn. 💐

Unfortunately, no-one will insure me.😭
I could be your tour guide and use Zoom. 😂 I know where to find the bargains.

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 22:05:17

Yes, a GN makeover 😁

Clothes, makeovers -- and perhaps a facelift--.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 18-Nov-23 21:52:10

I’m in 👍🏻

Grammaretto Sat 18-Nov-23 21:51:07

Rome it is! I could definitely do with a makeover. 😄

Maggiemaybe Sat 18-Nov-23 21:36:32

You’re not the only one, Callistemon! Could we have a GN coach trip?

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 21:17:00

I need to go there!!

Marydoll Sat 18-Nov-23 21:16:19

I once went into a cosmetic shop in Rome (there are many) to look for a lipstick. The assistant offered to do my makeup, I was reluctant, ( not my thing), but DH encouraged me.
I did not recognise myself, it was a transformation!
I did come out €50 lighter!😂

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 21:08:07

Rome it is, then, Marydoll

I need a makeover too, will they do that there?
