Remaining anonymous?

I have been to quite a few different meet ups and in none has anyone remained anonymous . The first thing we do is share our first names( no need for surnames). It would seem strange to retain our GN names. I have had a couple of funny experiences when meeting with people I don’t already know. I asked some bemused lady if she wasAuntieflo and someone else if she was Hazbeen. Does anyone know if the latter is still on GN? I haven’t heard of her lately.

It would be funny if that was the case but I cant imagine it is.

I would have been surprised if people did not give their real names but just wondered, I thought people might wish to remain anonymous as they do online.

The lovely GN friends that I meet with all know each others names.

In one case we realised we knew each others family members.

I like this forum for the anonymity to be honest. I don’t (wouldn’t) go to meet ups. This, for me, is just an on line exchange of opinions and ideas.

That said, the warmth, support and kindness extended to me ‘virtually’ has been amazing and comforting in equal measure.

I e never been to any meet ups as there are none near me but I do have some very very good lovely email friends from Gransnet and of course we use our own names

i think most people try to be helpful, or at least sympathetic, most of the time.

If you meet someone in real life you generally use your real name but I suppose in the meet up section Gran1244 and nanna25xfromBadingstoke might post as other identities on chat? Who knows? We are all an experiment

My thoughts exactly. Much as I enjoy GN, I have no interest in meeting others, it’s totally separate to ‘real life’, if that makes sense.

I have met lots of lovely Grans in real life.

The Glesca Grannies use first names, no surnames. They are a lovely bunch of grans and we all get on well with each other.
However, that doesn't mean we don't welcome new people to the group.

Some of us do keep in touch outside of GN, so know each other's surnames.

My first GN meet up was a lunch at a restaurant in a popular spot. I arrived early and sat outside trying to guess who might also be going to it. I asked one lady if she was a Gran and she glared at me and pushed past! Luckily a group of others turned up and I was soon happily included and thoroughly enjoyed the chat. The meal was quite nice but the company was better.

Oh Hazbeen, I am so glad you are still on Gransnet. We had a good couple of meet ups in your area.

I don’t go to meeting Auntieflo still posts on here. I like the recipes she has posted in the past and still use them.

It’s a bit of a long way for me to go so,no,I haven’t. I wouldn’t mind,though. It would be interesting to connect names and faces! I had a laugh as Greenfinch’s post - imagine asking if someone was ‘Hazbeen’ - sorry Hazbeen but they might take it the wrong way and give you a punch!

I nearly made it to a Glesca Grans meet-up even though I’m a long way from Glasgow. I was going to be visiting and would have loved an opportunity to meet some Gransnet friends. Unfortunately the trip had to be cancelled and I haven’t been well enough to plan another trip yet,

Some on here have become friends and I know some names. Many know my name.

I think it’s up to the individual really.
