Landline or not?

I am about to cancel my sky Sun as it is jolly expensive. Have found a much better deal with Virgin. However, they cannot add my landline at present.

I have heard tell that landlines are to be phased out and wonder if this is the time to bite the bullet and use mobile only.

Has anyone done this, please? With hindsight was it a good move. Thank you.

Our landline telephone is included with our:

Wifi
Television
T.V. Film Companies

So it is basically no extra charges though we do use it to call our twin daughters when they are visiting in Spain.

Salti Is that monthly cost only for your phone?

Landlines are being phased out in 2025. If you've a poor mobile signal you van use Wi Fi calling on your mobile. If you still need a replacement due to poor signal in the home there will be VOIP phones to replace them (don't ask for anything about them - I haven't got a clue).

I often don't answer my landline as it is rarely a call I actually want. Most scam calls come on the landline and I expect that when I move house I won't have one as I'd have to change my number. I have only 2 people who ring my landline, one who is short of money so uses the 'one hour call for free' that she has. The other has plenty money but thinks ringing a mobile is too expensive as she uses her landline. I don't make any calls out from my landline as they are charged and the ones on my mobile come within my contract. I'm not sure if I need to keep it here for the internet connection - something I need to look into. If I need one after I move I won't give anyone the number and I may not even have a handset plugged into the line. That would save a lot of scam calls!

We still have a landline and it is only used occasionally by older friends who prefer to use their own landline. I am hard of hearing and find it difficult to hear on the landline, even with the speakerphone on. For this reason I prefer my mobile phone, especially as l have Bluetooth on my hearing aids which allows me to link it with the mobile phone. A friend of mine who has had many health issues and is very self-obsessed has recently been given hearing aids. She also prefers the landline. I suggested to her that she must have better hearing than me because she could hear well enough on the landline and I really struggle. She did not like this notion, but I would be very happy to be the “loser” in this situation. I have had impaired hearing most of my life one way or another.

Landlines are not being phased out NannyBarbie. The method of powering them is changing to Wi-Fi. Ours has already been changed to run off the broadband.

My experience is - if there is a power failure your landline is out. A cell phone still gives you access in case of emergencies. (Keep it charged at all times.)

I CXL’d my landline almost two years ago - have not missed it at all. Especially the constant or random soliciting calls that are endless. On a cell phone you can block those calls and have peace a quiet.

i use my landline, i always have, my mobile is my son's idea, he pays the bill and i hardly ever use it, he uses it as a tracker to make sure i am okay, i take it down to england once a year as my dad does not have a phone, when someone wants my number i tell them i don't have a mobile, i use a walker when i am out and the number of people that bump into me because they are looking at there phone is so annoying.

No the £35 is for the very fast fibre Internet, and all our phone calls.

Juicylucy Sat 13-Apr-24 15:34:28

I’ve not used my landline since 2017 the phone is in a drawer in the house somewhere, even though I have connection through my sky package the only calls I got where nuisance calls. People just don’t use them anymore. Well in my experience anyway.

Yiayia4 Sat 13-Apr-24 15:43:08

Not had a landline since moving here in September.Really don’t miss all the rubbish calls.

janestheone Sat 13-Apr-24 16:02:05

I have a landline, and use it very rarely. Get a very occasional call on it, usually a potential scam. But I notice people are talking about making and receiving calls. Do people still use their phones for that?

grannyro Sat 13-Apr-24 16:43:25

They will be phased out in the future but I much prefer my land line. My sister and I speak for about an hour each time, twice a week. If we use mobiles there is a tinny. delayed connection. We much prefer to use the land line as it is a clearer line. (Mind you that could be because we are both going deaf now!!)

Sussex02 Sat 13-Apr-24 16:53:38

I haven’t used a landline for years. I keep my mobile in my pocket so not obvious but can answer a call immediately. Also use to screen calls so if u known number etc do t answer then block.

Greciangirl Sat 13-Apr-24 17:47:45

I am with Virgin and have to have a landline in order to receive the full package. Or so they say.
I recently had to switch over to the router method as well.

I dont particularly want a landline and having to pay approx £17 a month for it is rather annoying.

Does anyone else with Virgin still pay this amount?

We don’t seem to have all landline calls, free and inclusive.
Only evening and weekend calls.

varian Sat 13-Apr-24 18:01:47

Our landline is on our wifi contract.

I never give anyone my mobile number - only on a need to know basis so I never get spam or rubbish on my mobile.

I do get nuisance calls on the landline but cut them off very quickly.

If I am dealing with an organisation which asks for my mobile number (as many do) I give my landline number.

I mostly use my mobile when travelling or for Whatsapp which is the main way I talk to friends and family.

I am very reluctant to give up the landline. Calls in the UK, to landlines, and mobiles are free on the landline and I generally use Whatsapp to talk to friends and family abroad.

We only have mobiles now, not noticed any problems

When we were with virgin they pulled that one with us. We didn’t give in, they dropped the claim that we had to have a landline.

Sweetsnbooksnradio4 Sat 13-Apr-24 18:58:03

Hubby was offered a better deal by BT if he agreed to give up the landline. He went for it. I’m forgetful and it was my way of tracking down my well-named mobile.

So very annoying. In latter times the unsolicited calls had dried up - I used to enjoy trying to keep them on the phone! But life moves on!

Skydancer Sat 13-Apr-24 19:07:07

When mobile phones first came in it was very expensive to call anyone. Now it isn't so there is no point in a house phone.

poppysmum Sat 13-Apr-24 19:36:09

we have a landline the phone and broadband are all in together and as our mobile signal is dodgy here I would be lost without a landline. guaranteed if you have to hang on during a long call such as to the Drs then your mobile will either die or lose signal cutting you off which is frustrating when you have gone from 28th in line to number 2!

We are with Virgin and only have Broadband.
I'd ring them and see what the difference is with and without landline.
I think that if you have the full package of Broadband and TV it is cheaper to have the landline than not to. Simply unplug the handset and forget you have a landline.

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 19:50:34

We are mobile only as the landline bill was massive and we hardly ever used it

As has been said many times on this thread, there is no need to rely on mobile signal any more. As long as your phone is a relatively new one it will have a setting for WiFi calling. Your calls will be made using the Broadband signal that you are using and not the phone signal.
Good broadband is a necessity these days, a landline isn't.

As for giving out your number on forms etc. I use the TruCall number 0333 88888888.(You can leave out an 8 if the website says that the number is too long). This takes the caller to a recorded message saying that you don't want unsolicited phone calls. Free and easy to use.

Diggingdoris Sat 13-Apr-24 20:23:44

Our mobile signal is so iffy and unreliable most days that we need a landline for a backup.
