Can I use my bus pass on London buses?

The TFL Go app is really useful to have on your phone if you are travelling around London and aren’t familiar with the routes. You can tap in your destination and it shows you which bus to take, where the nearest bus stops are, how long you have to wait for the next one, suggests alternative routes, there are tube and train maps on it as well.

I have used mine in London and Essex. I live in Kent

In answer to OP - as long as her bus pass was issued in England, YES.
Clearly only on buses (not the underground or trains or trams) and not in Scotland or Wales.

Not a lot more to be said really.

I live just outside London and usually use the train if I go into the city. I've only used my bus pass locally when I flew into Heathrow and the Elizabeth line was not running due to a power failure so I had to get a bus. The local buses are pretty useless so I walk or drive everywhere, but I've used my pass in Oxford, Leeds and Bradford. Having now figured out how to use google maps in conjunction with bus routes I'm thinking I might try using the bus next time I go into the city. Some of my friends do and it saves a lot on the train fare, but I've always worried about finding where to get the bus back. My DiL showed me how to use the app when I was last in Bradford and I took my 3 year old grandson out by bus a couple of times. He loved it as it isn't a regular experience for him and it saved all the hassle of moving his car seat into my car and also the cost of fuel. Win all round! I think their bus services are better up North but I guess living in a city is part of it.

Do you live in Scotland? In that case, it’s true you can’t use bus pass in England.

My West Midlands bus pass also allows me to travel free on the Metro and trains within the area. I can go as far as Coventry and Wolverhampton which is helpful. If I am going to London for instance I need only book from Coventry.

Yes you can, and in London you can travel after 9am.

It might be helpful to know that the bus pass can also be used for part of longer journeys: I regularly travel to Heathrow as my daughter lives in West London, but it was a year before a driver asked me why I was paying so much. Turns out my pass would get me most of the way to London, and I then buy a ticket from there to Heathrow. That has reduced my fare form £35 return to £16!!!

The only times I was unable to use my bus pass were in Manchester and Blackpool on the trams but the buses took it. I have used my pass all over England.

Yes I can use it in London as I live in Lancashire.

Yes you can. I use mine in London (I live in South Yorkshire) Don’t tap the card on the machine ( it won’t register) Just show it to the driver.

I use mine regularly in London and two outer areas when visiting children. The driver nods you through as Callistemon says, the pass doesn't register on the machine, possibly because they are set up for Oyster cards. I've never had a problem, you should be fine 🙂

If you have a bus pass issued anywhere in England you can use it anywhere in England. Not in Scotland or Wales.

Yes, since I got my English bus pass, when I go to London I steady of getting a travel card like I used to do, I take buses instead. It may take a bit longer but the view is so much better. I've seen so many interesting things going on the bus instead of the tube. And often the bus stop is nearer the attraction you are visiting than the tube station. Tate Britain for example. Obviously if tube was a lot more convenient and buses would take a lot longer I'd use the tube.
If travelling before 9.30 just pay.
One day when I'm able, I plan on working out a sightseeing tour on the ordinary bus

Yes, you can use your bus pass in London! Don't make a show of yourself by trying to tap it on the onboard ticket machine, though, the buses don't recognise the Old Dears' bus pass, you just wave it at the driver and smile. When I visit my daughter in London, I get the 68 bus from Euston to Herne Hill, it takes about an hour, but I love seeing all the stunning buildings, and the view from Waterloo Bridge as we cross the Thames. The daughter makes fun of me, because it would be much quicker by Tube, but it's a free journey (and sight seeing tour), so I'm damn well using my bus pass!

Yes. Mostly local passes don't work the card readers so just show yours to the driver and all will be well. I use my Gloucester one every couple of months.

They don't work the Tube though, you will have to pay for that.

I’ve just checked. You can use your bus pass subject to the usual restrictions after 930 in London. It does not cover the Underground or overground

I have a Herefordshire pass and have used it in several places including London. Also, as I live only a few miles from the border, I use it regularly going into Wales and back, as long as the journey starts or finishes in England. I just can't travel further into Wales

Fyi I was able to use my bus pass in Wales for a very good discount on any bus

I have a disabled pass and that's the same. I can use on buses between 9.30 am and 11 pm outside my area
