Now seem to be called 'Almonds' rather than the 'Armonds' I have always known them.

When did that happen? Or is it just ne?

JamesandJon33 Tue 30-Apr-24 13:38:50

Always almonds, and I have lived in Wales and the Home Counties.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 30-Apr-24 13:43:13

Always armonds to me - East Anglia.

Cabbie21 Tue 30-Apr-24 13:43:13

Almonds for me too.

Georgesgran Tue 30-Apr-24 13:44:20

Armonds in the North East.

NotAGran55 Tue 30-Apr-24 13:49:58

My husband says almonds and I say armonds. Obviously he is wrong 😃

MissInterpreted Tue 30-Apr-24 14:02:00

I'm confused. When were they ever called 'armonds'?

AGAA4 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:04:25

The L is usually silent in almonds but may depend on where you live.

Farmor15 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:04:37

I've always pronounced them "ahmonds"with silent L.

Visgir1 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:07:38

Never heard of Armonds?
Almonds to me.. As in Al..monds, no silent L in my part of the world.

It's us! 😁

It must be a Midlands pronunciation.

Looks like American pronunciation may include L but not English. Neither says it with R!

AGAA4 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:09:46

Cambridge English Dictionary. The L is silent in English but Americans sound the L.

X post Farmor

Cabbie21 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:15:01

Oh I wrote it up wrongly earlier. Ahmonds.

AreWeThereYet Tue 30-Apr-24 14:18:05

Always known them as almonds. Never heard anyone say 'armonds'. MrA is from NE and he says almonds too.

Grandma70s Tue 30-Apr-24 14:22:04

The standard Received Pronunciation in British English is always Ahmund. Almond, sounding the L, is a spelling pronunciation.

Callistemon21 Tue 30-Apr-24 14:23:51

There! I knew we wus posh, kittylester 😁

Shelflife Tue 30-Apr-24 14:24:14

Most definitely a silent L!!

Grandma70s Tue 30-Apr-24 14:24:53

It’s nothing to do with where you come from in Britain. Received Pronunciation is the same everywhere.

American ‘English’ can be different.

Phew that's a relief, calli. I was a bit worried.

Ahmunds

JamesandJon33 Tue 30-Apr-24 15:17:20

My neighbour says All munds. Double L

That's certainly what I've always known to be the case - silent 'L'. No idea where 'armonds' came from, as there's no 'r' in it?

grandtanteJE65 Tue 30-Apr-24 15:33:24

To me, the l in almonds is silent, as is the l in salmon. I thought pronouncing the l in almonds was an Americanism.
