Now seem to be called 'Almonds' rather than the 'Armonds' I have always known them.

When did that happen? Or is it just ne?

You are all talking nuts!

ALmonds here in Birmingham. I've only heard people on TV call them Armonds.

The 'armonds' was my illustration of the normal pronunciation when i was young.

Other people have, i think, suggested 'ahmonds' for the same thing.

That makes more sense.

I never pronounce the L. Ahmonds for me.

Allegretto Tue 30-Apr-24 17:53:21

Ahmonds!

Primrose53 Tue 30-Apr-24 17:45:20

Thinking about this here is how we said it “olmond”.😉

Primrose53 Tue 30-Apr-24 17:41:44

We always pronounced the L in almond in our house. Maybe it was how my Irish Mum said it. They also say “filum” instead of “film”. Loads of similar examples too.

Whatever you call them, they are delicious. 🙂My Mum always called marzipan Almond Paste.

grandtanteJE65 Tue 30-Apr-24 15:33:24

To me, the l in almonds is silent, as is the l in salmon. I thought pronouncing the l in almonds was an Americanism.

Grandma70s

The standard Received Pronunciation in British English is always Ahmund. Almond, sounding the L, is a spelling pronunciation.

That's certainly what I've always known to be the case - silent 'L'. No idea where 'armonds' came from, as there's no 'r' in it?

JamesandJon33 Tue 30-Apr-24 15:17:20

My neighbour says All munds. Double L

winterwhite Tue 30-Apr-24 15:00:43

Ahmunds

There! I knew we wus posh, kittylester 😁

Phew that's a relief, calli. I was a bit worried.

Grandma70s Tue 30-Apr-24 14:24:53

It’s nothing to do with where you come from in Britain. Received Pronunciation is the same everywhere.

American ‘English’ can be different.

Shelflife Tue 30-Apr-24 14:24:14

Most definitely a silent L!!

Always known them as almonds. Never heard anyone say 'armonds'. MrA is from NE and he says almonds too.
