What do you think? Is 76 too old for wearing shorts.
I bought a navy pair yesterday, mid thigh, to wear on a holiday we have booked. My legs are not too bad, but it’s more I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I normally wear crops…
I’m going with my daughter and three grandchildren, so yesterday while giving my Grandson a lift, he’s 16, I mentioned I’d bought shorts for the holiday, he just “Uumm”, I asked if he thought I was too old for shorts.
He was aghast and said “Grandma, why would you even think that, they’re just shorts, you just wear them, you’ll look great” He’s such a love ❤️
Do any of you Grandma’s wear shorts?

My legs are quite shapely and nice (for 67) but I just don't like shorts. I don't get on with the sort of tailored, longer shorts for "more mature" ladies but it's whatever you feel comfortable in. I live in cotton dresses in the summer although not this summer, it's been awful.

Unfortunately I have legs like two ham shanks and haven't worn shorts since I was in my twenties. They just don't suit me but I think they look find on fine on others.

I wear shorts at the beach, and sometimes for hiking and in the garden. I actually don't find them that cool when it's really hot to be honest, it gets a bit sweaty around the crotch area eventually.

If you feel comfortable in them and you like them, wear them.

If you're going to waste your holiday time feeling uncomfortable because you're not sure about them I would go for something you do feel comfortable in so you can relax.

I love shorts! Longer Levi’s that can be rolled up if necessary… elastic waist cotton chambray, or lightweight striped linen-look (both from Sainsbury’s), decent pockets for dog-walks, comfy and cool. Worn with a t-shirt and converse, or hoodie /fleece and short wellies for wet summer walks. I don’t expect anyone to look at my legs and I wouldn’t give a toss what they thought anyway, comfort is everything.

No. My calf muscles are highly developed after years of intense ballet training. Not a good look when you're older, I think. I wear capri pants and no shorter!

There's nothing shameful in having well-developed muscles.

Good for you, I'd say!

Culottes? Also no. My old boss used to wear huge floral culottes and thought they looked lovely. They might have done from the front but most certainly not from behind. We used to have discussions about whether or not to tell her but chickened out.

I don’t like shorts on anyone over the age of about forty. There’s no need for them. Mutton dressed as lamb is a very real thing. Crops are fine.

I haven’t worn shorts since I was at school, and I didn’t like them even them. I prefer more feminine clothes.

I live not far from The Cotswold Way which attracts quite a few walkers of both sexes - who, in summer, wear shorts, socks and hiking boots. Many are well into their 70s, and they look absolutely fine.

They're not attempting to emulate the young and on the few very hot days we have, they are probably very practical and comfortable.

I wonder why we have never found an appropriate way to denigrate men who dress in clothes that might be considered unsuitable for their age?

Culottes?

I always say with clothes wear what you are comfortable in. I have very short shorts for wearing around the house and garden. I've also a dressy pair of cream mid thigh shorts which I'm happy to wear out and dress up with a nice blouse. I also have some mid thigh denim shirts which I love which I am happy to go out in for more casual wear like walking the dog or popping to the shops. Legs not perfect but perfectly acceptable. A bit of artificial tan makes the old pins look acceptable. Go for it and enjoy your holiday.

I don't know about good legs or bad legs, l have legs, I'm lucky. If it's hot enough l wear shorts.

I wear shorts that are just above the knee. My legs are in good condition with no veins showing. If you’re comfortable wearing them go for it.
Age is irrelevant, I was in town earlier and some of the worst sights wearing shorts were late teens. I suspect they didn’t have mirrors 😂

GrannyIvy Wed 24-Jul-24 16:28:58

I am 69 and wear knee length shorts to go out and about but have shorter ones around mid thigh for holiday and garden. My legs are tanned no veins and I feel comfortable in them. My advice if you feel happy and comfortable wearing them go ahead and do so. I am of the opinion who is going to look at me anyway😂

Aveline

Wear them and be damned - or at least judged grin

Who cares? Let them judge...
By this stage in our lives, if we haven't earned the right to wear whatever we want, when we want, then when can we?

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 24-Jul-24 15:44:08

I still wear shorts when it’s warm. My knees are quite chubby and scarred and my legs aren’t what they used to be! I wore shorts to Waitrose the other day and no one fainted.

I wouldn't let scars stop you from wearing shorts.

Norah Wed 24-Jul-24 14:35:01

I wear jeans, scars from tkr, no shorts.

JamesandJon33 Wed 24-Jul-24 14:06:32

I hate those trousers that finish just below the knee. Are they crops? They don’t look good on all but the young. I wear ankle grazers in the summer.

Patsy70 Wed 24-Jul-24 14:01:31

I wear shorts in the Summer, when I’m gardening, walking the dog, on holiday. My legs are slim as I’m only a size8/10, and they look better when I apply a little fake tan. Wear them with confidence DollyD and enjoy your holiday!

I would wear the. But I have fat knees

Me too. I’m quite a slim person but have always had chubby legs. My thighs kind of hang down over my knee caps. I’ve never worn shorts even when I was young. One thing I will say though is, if anyone does wear shorts make sure to put sun block on them: it’s any area that people sometimes forget about. I envy people that wear shorts envy

TwiceAsNice Wed 24-Jul-24 13:13:01

Sorry about not another

TwiceAsNice Wed 24-Jul-24 13:12:40

I get that Avaline. Let’s just say I don’t worry another the natives or horses opinions.😁 I long ago reached the age where I don’t care what people ( or horses) think of me .

MissInterpreted Wed 24-Jul-24 13:07:26

If you want to wear shorts, wear them - and don't give a flying about what anyone else may think! If you can't do that when you get to our age, when can you? I don't wear 'short' shorts, that's down to personal choice - but I will wear longer, almost knee-length shorts or, heaven forbid, 'crops', especially on holiday, and I'm 5'2 and about as broad as I'm tall.

B9exchange Wed 24-Jul-24 13:03:36

I have just realised that by 'crops' you are referring to cropped trousers. I had uncomfortable visions of you all exposing your navels! 😃😃😃
