What do you think? Is 76 too old for wearing shorts.
I bought a navy pair yesterday, mid thigh, to wear on a holiday we have booked. My legs are not too bad, but it’s more I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I normally wear crops…
I’m going with my daughter and three grandchildren, so yesterday while giving my Grandson a lift, he’s 16, I mentioned I’d bought shorts for the holiday, he just “Uumm”, I asked if he thought I was too old for shorts.
He was aghast and said “Grandma, why would you even think that, they’re just shorts, you just wear them, you’ll look great” He’s such a love ❤️
Do any of you Grandma’s wear shorts?

Yes as soon as it warms up, on go my shorts.
I have had a knee replacement so I have a big scar but otherwise my legs are okay. I really don't care what anyone else thinks.
I also wear shorter dresses as well. Think I'm lucky my legs have no veins and they look fine.

I agree age has little to do with it more important is whether you feel comfortable or not.
Also on holiday surely "anything goes".....If my beach apparel bothered anybody I'm afraid they'd just have to get over it!!
I'm 71, in France and in summer wear "sensible" (I suppose) just-above knee-length shorts constantly including to supermarket and general shopping. I've got reasonably presentable legs from cycling.
I also have a lot of Capri pants that I like and agree they're useful if you don't like shorts.

Wear them & be damned!
Your body dress it how you like, if you don’t wear shorts, I’m guessing you do wear dresses and skirts so you will be showing some leg anyway. Your grandson is a very wise young man - listen to him

I don’t like shorts on anyone over the age of about forty. There’s no need for them. Mutton dressed as lamb is a very real thing. Crops are fine.

I haven’t worn shorts since I was at school, and I didn’t like them even them. I prefer more feminine clothes.

No need for them 🤣🤣.... like who decided that!
I'm 59 ....a size 8 to 10....with good legs and I look just fine in my shorts ....and even if was shorter and bigger and I wanted to wear shorts I would

That's for us natives and horses to judge!

I do wear linen mid thigh shirts from M&S with a tie waist. I’m 71 have worn shorts all my life. I’m slim and am lucky to still have pretty good legs. Shorts are cool in the summer and especially on holiday in a hotter country. I please myself and don’t think I scare the horses too much!

DollyD Wed 24-Jul-24 12:37:34

Thanks all, I’ve just tried them on and they’re going back, mid thigh is not a good look on me, although I’ve just found a pair in my holiday drawers, beige linen, on the knee, quite baggy and they look fine.
It’s not so much about looking good it’s more about being cool in the daytime heat, we’re going to visit my Son and family in Gozo, we will most likely be having early morning strolls and visiting out of the way beaches, so I would wear them for these occasions.
I’ve got floaty skirts and dresses and crops but I do remember wearing these shorts and feeling much cooler and don’t think they will frighten the natives…. 😂

Unless one has long legs crops look awful.

I agree, neither one thing nor the other. I’m 5’ 11” size 14/16 and wear just above the knee shorts or full length jeans/chinos.

Aveline Wed 24-Jul-24 12:28:24

I just came round the end of an aisle in the supermarket and there was a woman in extremely ill judged shorts! I'm sure she thought she looked great but oh dear. Think of others please!!

Shorts are not an age thing. They are a leg thing. I you have the legs for shorts wear them and enjoy. If you haven't don't. I haven't so I don't.

Exactly my sentiments BigBertha1 I haven't either.

I have a physio appointment on Monday and I have to wear shorts. I'll be changing immediately afterwards. My knees haven't seen the light of day since school PE lessons almost 50 years ago! So many dimples :0

karmalady Wed 24-Jul-24 12:18:11

That first woman wore short shorts, yuk

karmalady Wed 24-Jul-24 12:16:42

I saw a woman who looked older than me, wearing shorts in town yesterday and tbh she looked dreadful, the lumpiest, veined, colorful scraggiest legs I have ever seen, really horrible look.

I saw another woman, 50s perhaps, lined face but she looked pretty good in shorts

I have never liked shorts on me, not since I became a teenager and I know my place. However I wore lycra for my cycle ride this morning and look pretty good in that, 3/4 length

nanna8 Wed 24-Jul-24 12:05:37

I love shorts in Summer. Not the very short ones but the knee length ones. I have got a couple of pairs of shorter ones that I wear over bathers to walk down to the beach. I don’t have any veins showing in my legs, luckily.

I am 80 - nearly 81, and on really hot days, I wear shorts. I am still quite slim, I still have long shapely legs, why not.

On the other hand you will never find me in a cinch waisted dress, I have never had a small waist, and such dresses do not suit me.

In other words, wear what suits you, age has nothing to do with it.

ferry23 Wed 24-Jul-24 12:03:04

I've never liked shorts because they always seem to look dreadful from behind - scrunching up in the crotch area.

Having said that, once you get to a certain age you do tend to get beyond caring so much - comfort trumps looks.

Go for it!

Great advise from your GSon... who else would you listen to..!!

tanith Wed 24-Jul-24 11:54:11

I have lots and wear them on holiday or at home, shorter ones on holiday or in the garden but knee length out and about, my legs brown quickly every year as a result and look fine. I’m 76 by the way. Also have several capris which are are a good alternative if you don’t want to wear shorts.

maddyone Wed 24-Jul-24 11:50:23

Well my legs aren’t what they were, but they’re not too bad either, for my age. I do wear shorts, but they’re not really short shorts. I’ve bought two pairs from M+S this year, but prior to that I haven’t bought any for years. I only wear them in the garden or on holiday.

Theexwife Wed 24-Jul-24 11:48:26

I dont like them on older women however I would ask someone I value the opinion of if I couldn’t decide on a look.

winterwhite Wed 24-Jul-24 11:46:53

No one's knees look good over 40 but many people don't care two hoots, and it's no business of anyone else's. So 46, 76 or 96 is beside the point.

BigBertha1 Wed 24-Jul-24 11:43:04

Wear whatever you like. smile
If you can't do it now, well, when can you?
