Shorts or not?

What do you think? Is 76 too old for wearing shorts.
I bought a navy pair yesterday, mid thigh, to wear on a holiday we have booked. My legs are not too bad, but it’s more I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I normally wear crops…
I’m going with my daughter and three grandchildren, so yesterday while giving my Grandson a lift, he’s 16, I mentioned I’d bought shorts for the holiday, he just “Uumm”, I asked if he thought I was too old for shorts.
He was aghast and said “Grandma, why would you even think that, they’re just shorts, you just wear them, you’ll look great” He’s such a love ❤️
Do any of you Grandma’s wear shorts?

Dolly, have a lovely time, and be sure to have lots of photos of yourself in the offending articles.

Then you can post them here. grin

Have a very lovely holiday DollyD and be comfortable in whatever you decide to wear. Sounds like you have a lovely family who love you just as you are.

Thanks all, I’ve just tried them on and they’re going back, mid thigh is not a good look on me, although I’ve just found a pair in my holiday drawers, beige linen, on the knee, quite baggy and they look fine.
It’s not so much about looking good it’s more about being cool in the daytime heat, we’re going to visit my Son and family in Gozo, we will most likely be having early morning strolls and visiting out of the way beaches, so I would wear them for these occasions.
I’ve got floaty skirts and dresses and crops but I do remember wearing these shorts and feeling much cooler and don’t think they will frighten the natives…. 😂

What a lovely thing for your GS to be saying 😘
Myself , I’d love love love to wear shorts alas nowadays my knees are too far & back in the days when I was a teeny size in my teen years I always shied away from them thinking I was “ too skinny “ , if only .
Do envy those who have lovely legs & wear shorts . I may wear them in the garden but that’s about it .
You go for it & enjoy your holiday 😘

I don’t like shorts on anyone over the age of about forty. There’s no need for them. Mutton dressed as lamb is a very real thing. Crops are fine.

I haven’t worn shorts since I was at school, and I didn’t like them even them. I prefer more feminine clothes.

Oh dear 🫤

The eye rolling and rude comments were probably me grin

Or possibly me. I don't actually eye roll or make rude comments but I do have a quiet snigger sometimes.

Everybody should wear exactly what they want and feel comfortable in and ignore everyone else unless you've specifically asked someone's opinion in person.

But if you have very large buttocks I wouldn't recommend wearing tight black joggers with bumble bees on. To anyone walking behind you it looks like you're being chased by a swarm of bumble bees.

I always wear shorts on holiday. I wear them in the garden also. If it’s hot in the summer I wear them out too. When I turned 60 I started wearing bikinis again on holiday. I’m now 66. Wear your shorts when you want in my opinion!

Luckily we dont get too many hot days up north. Pedal pusher length is ok. My legs are so so white i would scare everyone in shorts.

Aveline Sun 28-Jul-24 15:54:54

More like, 'OMG what does she look like?'

MissAdventure Sun 28-Jul-24 15:36:37

Elbow, elbow... "Oh, for Pete's sake, would you look at her!"

"Who?"

"Her over there, with all that flesh on show."

"Which one?"

"Shhhhh! Don't make it obvious... what does she look like?"

"Erm... comfortable?" grin

Well, there's this thread seeking opinions.
Mens forums talk about cars, who's likely to win the footy, and all sorts of other things.

I havent seen one asking "should I wear shorts".

Not that I'm an expert on forums or men.

I guess there might be the odd few men who are insecure about their appearance, but nowhere near the extent that women are.

And when we're out in our shorts, I bet the majority of critical comments are from women!

Athrawes Sun 28-Jul-24 12:06:46

I've got 2 easy to wear shorts ie cheap and cheerful which I wear when its warm and there's noone else around. They're very comfortable but not suitable at all in my book for going out even just to the local shop!!!

The point is that I doubt men need to seek reassurance from other men before putting shorts on.
Well, I don't think they do.

I doubt many women do either. I am sure that some men and some women seek reassurance before they wear all sorts of garments.

Got it in one MissAdventure!

And I'd wager that the majority of men don't take too much notice of other men in shorts either.

Exactly, Dickens. I've never seen a man being criticised for wearing shorts. It may have taken me the best part of 60 years to realise it, but life is way too short to worry about what other people think. If people are judging what I'm wearing, that's their problem and not mine.

I have seen many men criticised for wearing shorts, comments on flabby well-known men on the beach big tummies bared, all those short legged men in below knee shorts that make them legs look even shorter.

People are so convinced that only women are criticised, they do not see the comments about men. Remember Rishi and his short trousers?

It wasn’t his shorts that made me look askance at a man the other day - it was his enormous gut bursting over the top of them, not to mention the singlet and tattoos.

ginny Sun 28-Jul-24 08:32:27

Wear whatever you want and feel comfortable in.Anyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t have to look.
I wonder why men don’t seem to have the same dilemma about wearing shorts.

I agree with the poster who said older flesh should be covered up. I wouldn’t want anyone to see my knees or my arms.

I wouldn’t want anyone to see my knees or my arms.

So many people have senior members in their family, I'm sure "older flesh" wouldn't surprise or bother them - that's assuming they're even looking...

ElaineI Sat 27-Jul-24 23:20:09

I wear shorts all the time in summer (this year jeans in the morning and shorts in late afternoon as we've had multi weather during each day!) Mine are mostly knee length. Wear cropped trousers if going anywhere posher or I'm not sure what the weather will bring. I don't really care what it looks like, just need to be comfortable.

Bonnybanko Sat 27-Jul-24 22:54:43

Dress to suit yourself, no one else matters same at the hairdressers style to suit yourself and be proud of your decisions

Aveline Sat 27-Jul-24 21:45:59

I once saw Jimmy Saville in very brief satin shorts. Maybe that's why I can't stand adults in shorts!

GrannyIvy Sat 27-Jul-24 18:22:50

I saw a lady probably late 70s in the briefest ever shorts in M & S food hall this morning. OMG I looked away, ok for the privacy of your garden or maybe the beach but not for early morning food shopping😂

Pri1 Sat 27-Jul-24 16:00:28

Of course wear shorts on holiday. I’m 73 and have never had second thoughts on wearing them.
