Take up a sport, such as badminton, tennis or Pickle ball. Play for fun. These racquet sports keep you physically and mentally healthy, also they’re social sports.

Funny thing, I had Astra Zeneca, shortly afterwards experienced a slight bleed behind one eye followed swiftly by the other eye, then suffered loads of floaters and sparkly bits in periphery of my vision. Went to hospital of course but told us my age. After this also suffered from stiff joints, fatigue, and started getting every little bug going.
These symptoms have eased but I still get stiff joints from time to time and my eyes haven’t recovered.
My husband had Pfizer and no ill effects.
Thought I had long covid at one point but thankfully I don’t think is that.

Scary, we were played weren't we?

To prevent falls when you get older you can just keep walking to strengthen your legs and ankles. Other exercises to that end will help, but just walking will do.

57 is a good time to start and the grandsons will keep you on your toes anyway!

Balance is important too, so bear that in mind. Maybe go cycling with the boys if and when they are old enough. The only thing for the back problem is exercise as well, or so I have been led to believe. The idea is to strengthen the core muscles which support you when standing and bending.

Good luck I with all that. Let us know how you get on. I've never managed it except when I've been to classes.

Not long after first jab (Astra Zeneca) started getting stiff hands & then hard lumps developed on the palms of my hands, had scans but no arthritis, then started with stiff feet- takes me ages to get going. Late 50s

Oh chronic burping same night as having Astra Zeneca- friends husband developed same symptoms 😩

Michaeleg1 Welcome to Gransnet. There is something here for everyone and you will learn something every time you come to the site.

There is a physiotherapist on You Tube called Will Harlow who specialises in over 50s! He has routines for everything, so hopefully you will find something for your back.

I still work fulltime as a Software Developer, a desk job but it gives me a lot of flexibility

I hope you have grown stronger after those serious life events!

You are totally right about mental health, I try to keep that in order, serves me well for now.

Did you try lifting some light weights or stretching? If I don't stretch when I get up I feel "fragile" whole day after

Do you still work? Full time or part-time?

57 is no age really. In my 60th year I thought I was getting old then a serious life event occured which made me have to re-start my life almost over again.
It made me realise I was much younger than I thought and my confidence and self-esteem came back.

Recently (I'm now 67) I just kept fit by walking and swimming but this has fallen by the wayside. I did some walking for charity to re-motivate myself. I don't do much gardening anymore.

It sounds like your GCs keep you active and I can't think of anything more positive. Do it while you can and they will see how much you can and can't do as time passes. Don't make a martyr of yourself either.

Keeping good mental health means getting good sleep, eating sensibly and getting some exercise. It isn't rocket science really.

It helps to embrace ageing rather than fighting it. Explain your worries to your DW too as she is a key person in your life.

One more tip; don't complain endlessly of any aches and pains to people- I have brothers and other male relatives who think I'm interested. I'm really not!

At 57 you are in the prime of your life, a bad back however can occur at any age. Your docs surgery will probs have a pamphlet showing exercises you can do to strengthen your back, I got one of these a few years ago and it does help. I take vitamins every day and try to eat healthily, at 57 try cutting down on red meat if you eat it and eat more high protein low fat meat like chicken/turkey, also fish, especially any high in omega 3.
Apart from this just enjoy life, I am over 10 years older than you and try to stay active, two things that help - running after the grandkids and Voltarol applied liberally.
😂

Hello everyone, I'm new here I'm so glad that I found this forum!

I don't know if Ask a gran is the right place to post to but it feels right..

I'm 57 year old grandad of 2 precious boys, we do a lot of activities together, going for short hikes, cycling, exploring, I even took them camping a few times but I feel like age is catching up on me.. Some of that stuff ain't that easy as it used to be, even helping my wife with garden feels hard on my back.

I'm wondering, what are people my age doing to get their body and mind in better shape?
