How much sleep do you get?

I’m 67 and get 6 hours if I’m lucky. Fall asleep but always always awake by 6am at the very latest! I think the call of nature wakes me up and then I can’t get back to sleep (or want to.)

I don’t put the light out until 11pm because I like to read in bed so am going to try to switch off by 10pm. I feel ok though and don’t nap during the day.

How much sleep do you get?

I'm very fond of my bed! I don't go usually until after 11 o'clock but have to set an alarm (well, two actually). I set my Alexa but always worry there might be a power cut so I set alarm on my phone. I usually get up once through the night but get back to sleep quite quickly. After years of doing the school run and alarms set for 7.30am I now set them for 8.30am. I have been known to just turn over and drop back to sleep if I know I have nothing planned for the morning but I do try not to do that!! Friends are very envious of me. I must say I never nod off during the day or early evening as many of them do!

My sleep pattern seems to be getting worse, I am lucky to get a 2 hours then lie awake/dose for another hour , then it I am lucky I will fall back asleep for another couple of hours. I guess it's since DH, had a stroke he is also the same and I think we disturb each other, although I have a rule that I won't chat if I am awake unless he needs me. He will often say something but I try not to engage with him as it sets my mind into overdrive. I do have a bed routine but I wish I could get a few more hours continually.

Six hours of interrupted sleep is average for me. Waking during that time for lavatory visits and to read for 30 minutes before settling again.
Some nights I only have two or three hours sleep. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.

I’m usually in bed between 9.30 and 10.30 these days and if I’m not tired, I’ll read for half an hour or so. Always up for the bathroom between 2.30 and 3.30, and then if I manage to get back to sleep, awake again at 5.30 and up making coffee! Can’t sleep during the day no matter how tired I am.

I’m obsessed with sleeping well and I do so most nights. I try to practice good sleep hygiene as the late Michael Mosley once described it!

No liquids after 7pm
no gadgets after 10pm
bed by 10.30
read for 20 minutes
radiator off in winter by 9pm
one pillow
blackout curtains
open window

If I follow the above I can almost guarantee sleeping straight through until 6am, no loo breaks. However if a snifter is partaken of all bets are off…🍷

I’ve only had a chair nap once, we’d come back from the States and I’d been awake for 33 hours.

Always a night owl, I try to get to bed by midnight then read for an hour - or until I drop off! Too often, I wake up a bit later with my glasses on my nose and the Kindle on the floor. I rarely have any trouble getting back to sleep. Usually I sleep for six or seven hours but tend to have a nap in the afternoon - the privilege of old age!

Cossy Fri 16-Aug-24 10:34:40

Never seem to have enough sleep, problems getting to sleep, problems staying asleep, problems feeling awake and refreshed in the morning.

Often snooze in the afternoon.

BigBertha1 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:59:06

I haven't had a full nights sleep in living memory. First had sleep disturbances when I went into nursing senior management and even though I have been retired for 10 years it hasn't got any better. The slightest worry will have me reading all night. I am trying Kind Patches which are helping quite a bit. If I have had a drink almost no sleep that night. I have the finest set of black circles round my eyes that you will have ever seen.

Athrawes Fri 16-Aug-24 09:54:38

I go to bed around 10.30 and get up at about 6.30 / 7am. Sounds good but I have to go to the loo 2 or 3 times in the night which is a nuisance but then I'm not exactly a spring chicken!

Bed to read a book, not screen, by 10, lights out at 11 and I am fortunate that I go to sleep almost straight away. Awake about 6 for a cup of coffee and the Today programme in bed, up at 7.

Reading the posts above I feel very fortunate that I sleep well. I do get tetchy if I don’t get a decent amount of sleep, so it’s just as well!

Cabbie21 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:12:43

I’ve not had much sleep for a week or so now, with the heat, then early sunrise. I am away from home now and there is traffic noise too.
Last night I went to bed early, asleep around 10 and woke at 3. I couldn’t drop off so I put the light on and did a Code Word puzzle which cleared my brain and made me sleepy, so I got another three hours in until 7.
I would like more sleep in general.

5 hours last night ... darned chest pain ...

Georgesgran Fri 16-Aug-24 08:40:41

I get about 4+ hours now. Last night (well, this morning really) I went to bed at 2am - up and about just after 6. When I go to bed around midnight, I’m awake from 4.30 onwards just waiting for dawn. Needless to say, I hate the early dark evenings and late mornings.
It doesn’t bother me, I feel ok (for my age) and I don’t do daytime naps.

I really feel that some people - my BF - worry unnecessarily about a run of bad nights/lack of sleep. It’s not written in stone that we must get 8 hours and spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed?

FlexibleFriend Fri 16-Aug-24 08:36:09

Between 8 and 10 hours a night, I do get up for the loo usually once a night but still manage to get back to sleep quite easily plus I'm dealing with intense pain in my knees. I also like a cool room and have air con in my bedroom which is on for an hour before I want to nod off. It then goes off until I wake up sweaty, put it on again on timer and go back to sleep. I'll be 70 in 5 days time.

jusnoneed Fri 16-Aug-24 08:23:07

I go to bed around 10pm, read for half an hour or so on the iPad and then sleep catches up with me. I usually get up for the loo somewhere between 2-3am but go straight back to sleep, wake between 5-6am. Get up because once I'm awake at that time I know I won't drop off again.
The only time I struggle with sleeping is when it's hot, I like to be in a cool room.

Jaxjacky Fri 16-Aug-24 08:21:31

Bed about 10, read for a while, wake up when the sun sneaks round the blackout blind, mask on, back to sleep for an hour or so. I average 7/8 hours, I usually dream very vividly and can remember parts of my dreams.

Marydoll Fri 16-Aug-24 08:16:08

I would do anything for a decent night's sleep. On top of chronic pain, toxic medication causes night terrors, so it is very difficult.
Last night my dreams included a peach coloured denim jacket (peach doesn't suit my colouring) from QVC and aliens.
Explain that one! 🤣

karmalady Fri 16-Aug-24 08:10:44

8 hours last night, I changed my bedtime routine to try and increase my sleeping hours, it worked. Usually I get 7 hours but also 6 hours at times. I am thinking about bed by 9pm and am usually asleep by 10. My aim is 7 -8 hours of sleep. I do wake in the night for bathroom but get back to sleep quickly

It is all about circadian rhythm, absorbing light in the morning and sleep routines and sleep hygiene as in not having screen time for an hour before sleep.

Casdon

I go to sleep at about 11, and wake up between 5 and 6, so must average about six hours too. Most days I feel fine with that amount of sleep, If really tired I go to bed earlier, because I still wake up early no matter when I go to bed - I’m sure I read somewhere that an hours sleep before midnight is better than two hours after, but that may be an old wives tale?

Does that include an hour between 2pm and 3pm Casdon? grin

BlueBelle Fri 16-Aug-24 07:39:58

I get about 5 hours a night usually wake about 3 or 4 and find it’s absolutely fine for me I do often nap in the evening without meaning to and still go straight off when I get to bed
I m happy with my sleep pattern and it seems to make no difference to my energy levels

HowVeryDareYou2 Fri 16-Aug-24 07:38:51

I'm 65, and I usually get about 6 or 7 hours of disturbed sleep. I get to sleep by about 11, 11.30, wake for the toilet at least once, then wake every morning between 5 and 6, but can never get back off to sleep.

ferry23 Fri 16-Aug-24 07:35:08

I sleep so badly I've almost given up bothering to get into bed. I actually find I sleep more on my sofa. Some nights I may get 5 hours if I'm lucky but rarely in one stretch.

Last night I slept from 10 - 11.15. Then from around 13.30 - about 3.45.

It's a vicious circle - the longer I'm awake during the night the more I'm likely to raid the fridge and the more I'm likely to to fall into a coma like sleep in the afternoon.

I've tried everything to break the bad sleep cycle over the years, but I now just put up with it.

Gingster Fri 16-Aug-24 07:33:13

I’m getting less and less sleep. Go to bed about 10 and read for an hour. Up an hour later for the loo 🙄 and wake about 4 or 5 and can’t get back to sleep. My mind goes into overdrive and I can’t relax, so I get up . 😤.
