How much sleep do you get?

I’m 67 and get 6 hours if I’m lucky. Fall asleep but always always awake by 6am at the very latest! I think the call of nature wakes me up and then I can’t get back to sleep (or want to.)

I don’t put the light out until 11pm because I like to read in bed so am going to try to switch off by 10pm. I feel ok though and don’t nap during the day.

How much sleep do you get?

I’m asleep by 9.30 pm. Very much a morning person. At the moment I'm very tired. DH is waking twice in the night for the toilet. The second time being about 3am and I can’t get back to sleep, so I’m getting 5.5 hours, not enough at all. I get up about 4.30.

Usually read till 10:30 and sleep till 6ish so 7/8 hours. Sometimes I visit the bathroom in the early hours but not every night. I don’t nap and manage well on 7/8 hrs.

Another one here not getting nearly enough! Waking in the night and not being able to get back to sleep is so frustrating and really bad for health.

However, last night I tried a getting back to sleep hack - props to Dr Rajan Karan on YouTube - and it worked! Basically, you think of a word, say, bedtime and say all the words you can think of beginning with b until you tire of thinking b words then move on to e, then d & so on. Apparently, it breaks the neural cycles of overthinking which prevent falling asleep again quickly.

Admittedly, I only tried it for the first time last night & it might not work again tonight but anything's worth a go for those blissful extra few hours.

I had about two hours sleep last night.
I rarely get a full night's sleep, due to chronic pain.

I go to bed early now because I like to lie and read for a while. I have no issues getting to sleep, but I wake twice or three times in the night for the loo. And then usually wake half five/six. It is annoying waking so frequently but I've got used to it

GrannyIvy Fri 16-Aug-24 07:27:12

I go to bed at 9 to 9.30 pm and read. I tend to wake every 2 hours and usually one or two trips to loo and range from 6 to 7 hours sleep. Never sleep straight through. Always tired these days but never nap in the day!

Gingster Fri 16-Aug-24 07:33:13

I’m getting less and less sleep. Go to bed about 10 and read for an hour. Up an hour later for the loo 🙄 and wake about 4 or 5 and can’t get back to sleep. My mind goes into overdrive and I can’t relax, so I get up . 😤.

I sleep so badly I've almost given up bothering to get into bed. I actually find I sleep more on my sofa. Some nights I may get 5 hours if I'm lucky but rarely in one stretch.

Last night I slept from 10 - 11.15. Then from around 13.30 - about 3.45.

It's a vicious circle - the longer I'm awake during the night the more I'm likely to raid the fridge and the more I'm likely to to fall into a coma like sleep in the afternoon.

I've tried everything to break the bad sleep cycle over the years, but I now just put up with it.

I'm 65, and I usually get about 6 or 7 hours of disturbed sleep. I get to sleep by about 11, 11.30, wake for the toilet at least once, then wake every morning between 5 and 6, but can never get back off to sleep.

BlueBelle Fri 16-Aug-24 07:39:58

I get about 5 hours a night usually wake about 3 or 4 and find it’s absolutely fine for me I do often nap in the evening without meaning to and still go straight off when I get to bed
I m happy with my sleep pattern and it seems to make no difference to my energy levels

Casdon Fri 16-Aug-24 07:40:44

I go to sleep at about 11, and wake up between 5 and 6, so must average about six hours too. Most days I feel fine with that amount of sleep, If really tired I go to bed earlier, because I still wake up early no matter when I go to bed - I’m sure I read somewhere that an hours sleep before midnight is better than two hours after, but that may be an old wives tale?

Does that include an hour between 2pm and 3pm Casdon? grin

8 hours last night, I changed my bedtime routine to try and increase my sleeping hours, it worked. Usually I get 7 hours but also 6 hours at times. I am thinking about bed by 9pm and am usually asleep by 10. My aim is 7 -8 hours of sleep. I do wake in the night for bathroom but get back to sleep quickly

It is all about circadian rhythm, absorbing light in the morning and sleep routines and sleep hygiene as in not having screen time for an hour before sleep.

Marydoll Fri 16-Aug-24 08:16:08

I would do anything for a decent night's sleep. On top of chronic pain, toxic medication causes night terrors, so it is very difficult.
Last night my dreams included a peach coloured denim jacket (peach doesn't suit my colouring) from QVC and aliens.
Explain that one! 🤣

Bed about 10, read for a while, wake up when the sun sneaks round the blackout blind, mask on, back to sleep for an hour or so. I average 7/8 hours, I usually dream very vividly and can remember parts of my dreams.

I go to bed around 10pm, read for half an hour or so on the iPad and then sleep catches up with me. I usually get up for the loo somewhere between 2-3am but go straight back to sleep, wake between 5-6am. Get up because once I'm awake at that time I know I won't drop off again.
The only time I struggle with sleeping is when it's hot, I like to be in a cool room.

FlexibleFriend Fri 16-Aug-24 08:36:09

Between 8 and 10 hours a night, I do get up for the loo usually once a night but still manage to get back to sleep quite easily plus I'm dealing with intense pain in my knees. I also like a cool room and have air con in my bedroom which is on for an hour before I want to nod off. It then goes off until I wake up sweaty, put it on again on timer and go back to sleep. I'll be 70 in 5 days time.

I get about 4+ hours now. Last night (well, this morning really) I went to bed at 2am - up and about just after 6. When I go to bed around midnight, I’m awake from 4.30 onwards just waiting for dawn. Needless to say, I hate the early dark evenings and late mornings.
It doesn’t bother me, I feel ok (for my age) and I don’t do daytime naps.

I really feel that some people - my BF - worry unnecessarily about a run of bad nights/lack of sleep. It’s not written in stone that we must get 8 hours and spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed?

Luckygirl3 Fri 16-Aug-24 08:51:00

5 hours last night ... darned chest pain ...

Cabbie21 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:12:43

I’ve not had much sleep for a week or so now, with the heat, then early sunrise. I am away from home now and there is traffic noise too.
Last night I went to bed early, asleep around 10 and woke at 3. I couldn’t drop off so I put the light on and did a Code Word puzzle which cleared my brain and made me sleepy, so I got another three hours in until 7.
I would like more sleep in general.

lixy Fri 16-Aug-24 09:32:45

Bed to read a book, not screen, by 10, lights out at 11 and I am fortunate that I go to sleep almost straight away. Awake about 6 for a cup of coffee and the Today programme in bed, up at 7.

Reading the posts above I feel very fortunate that I sleep well. I do get tetchy if I don’t get a decent amount of sleep, so it’s just as well!

Athrawes Fri 16-Aug-24 09:54:38

I go to bed around 10.30 and get up at about 6.30 / 7am. Sounds good but I have to go to the loo 2 or 3 times in the night which is a nuisance but then I'm not exactly a spring chicken!

BigBertha1 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:59:06

I haven't had a full nights sleep in living memory. First had sleep disturbances when I went into nursing senior management and even though I have been retired for 10 years it hasn't got any better. The slightest worry will have me reading all night. I am trying Kind Patches which are helping quite a bit. If I have had a drink almost no sleep that night. I have the finest set of black circles round my eyes that you will have ever seen.

Cossy Fri 16-Aug-24 10:34:40

Never seem to have enough sleep, problems getting to sleep, problems staying asleep, problems feeling awake and refreshed in the morning.

Often snooze in the afternoon.
