Rubbish haircut - what do you do?

I have had my hair cut and blow dried by the same girl about 4 times and it has always been reasonably OK.
However last week she cut it again and made a real mess of it. I wear it quite short with a fringe. This time the fringe is lopsided with one end very short.
One side is cut round my ear the other side is longer and just tucked behind. It has ‘layer lines’ on one side and at the back. All this was concealed by the way she had blow-dried it but she must have known, surely.
I don’t want it re-cut as it is already too short. What would other gransnetters do?
I live in a small town where there are very few affordable hairdressers.

Your dad's comment is so blooming brilliant & sooo very 'DAD'. Lovely.😊

I quite agree with ferry23. I have had this happen to me, but with colour, it's very annoying and also a waste of money. Perhaps you could disguise it in some way, maybe by brushing it to the side? At least it will grow out in six weeks. Good luck!

many years ago as a teenager I saved up and went to a well known hairdresser for a haircut, when he was done I left the salon speechless and returned to work. When I got into the office I burst out crying and my manager was as shocked as I was, one of my colleagues volunteered to take me back to the salon and get it sorted, fortunately I did have short hair so it was fixed, my colleague Flora spoke to the stylist and told him if he didn’t fixed she go to the local papers to shame him. It was sorted, but to this day I still feel sick passing the salon, his son has taken over and I’ve heard similar stories about him. Go back explain what you want to happen otherwise you’ll let others know how you were treated a hairdresser is only as good as their reputation and if it’s bad their business will suffer

I say "Lovely, thanks" when they show me, "lovely thank you" when they make sure i can see how bad the back is, then I give them a good tip, get outside, and put a hat on.

🤣🤣🤣

Snap! Although, once with a very arrogant hairdresser who ignored everything I had said I wanted because he knew best, I waited until he had blow dried my hair into his work of art before bringing out my elastic band, sweeping up my locks into a messy pony tail and smiling sweetly at him as I sailed out the door. His face was a picture.

Ceertainly go back - the owner will want to know if customers are not happy, and be given a chance to put it right, either by offering a tidy now, if that's possible, or a free haircut. We have all been in your position - only a few months ago I got home from an expensive cut and blow dry; DD took one look and said 'Oh'. That was enough.

albertina Sun 15-Sept-24 11:59:58

It's a difficult one. I would vote with my feet in your case.
I complained about a hair cut once, went back to the salon for it to be fixed and the girl who did it burned my ear with the curling tongs, deliberately. I hadn't been rude with my complaint, so was surprised.

I don't have the easiest hair and have now found a good hairdresser who can deal with it, even though it means travelling.

Milest0ne Sun 15-Sept-24 12:02:16

If you are going in to complain, take photos and show them at the salon. I have been to a hairdressers where they took photos of my cut.

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 12:02:55

if you want to go back/make a point take a photo of how it is now to point out the faults and problems. I once took a photo of how it was perfectly done to ask for "Same again".

Sennelier1 Sun 15-Sept-24 12:30:53

I would demand a compensation, your money back or a free haircut by the person of your choice. Once you have used your compensation, stop going there. Myself I never go to the hairdresser's but I understand other people want to, so maybe pay a bit more in another salon but go less often? Or find another affordable one a bit further away and make it an outing?

HeavenLeigh Sun 15-Sept-24 12:31:46

I’d be fuming I feel for you! Luckily I have a fantastic hairdresser who I go to every four weeks I’ve been where you have only once and it was a perm never seen such a frizzy mess it makes my stomach turn thinking of it. I would certainly go back and complain I’d want my money back certainly wouldn’t go there again, once bitten twice shy!

Witzend Sun 15-Sept-24 12:38:16

Years ago now, but I once had such a disastrous haircut, I burst into tears at the hairdresser’s (he’d given me a ‘short back and sides at the back) and once home, still in tears, phoned dd1, 100 miles away at uni.
I had better not say what I told her I looked like - wouldn’t be seen as exactly PC nowadays!

She phoned the hairdresser and gave him a massive boll*cking!

missdeke Sun 15-Sept-24 12:42:16

Unfortunately if it's already to short, tidying it up by someone else can only be done by cutting more off. I think I know the sort of cut they have given you, it's a style I personally find very unattractive. I would however go back to the hairdresser and demand a free cut by somebody else at a later date and if you have no choice ask for a different regular stylist. A hairdresser has no choice to restyle your hair without your agreement first.

Tanjamaltija Sun 15-Sept-24 12:50:03

Complain. It happened to me once, and the girl said 'No, it's not possible...' so I held up both sides and she said, 'Wow, you're right', and re-did it for free. But that was the last time I went there, even though there are other stylists.

pably15 Sun 15-Sept-24 13:01:40

last time I was at a hairdresser, it was the owner herself who styled my hair...I had been twice before and liked the way she did it..but this particular time, the shop was busy with young girls as it was a school prom night ,and although she wasn't styling their hair, she kept leaving mine...4 times to be exact...
getting her phone and taking photos of the young girls hairstyles...even when cutting mine she wasn't looking ,too busy watching the other stylists...which was a shame as I would have gone back, as it is I never did ,never been to a hairdresser since.

Why are people so afraid to be assertive with their hairdresser. Just tell them, politely, that the cut isn't quite what you asked for, and if you want to cancel an appointment just do it - you don't have to say why, although you cam if you want.

Lemontart Sun 15-Sept-24 13:26:55

* can

VenusDeVillendorf Sun 15-Sept-24 14:53:09

@Quizzer you say the cut
“was concealed by the way she had blow-dried it ”.. . so blow dry it the way she did and you’ve no problems!

Your hair will grow out. Maybe get a different person to trim it next time?

VenusDeVillendorf Sun 15-Sept-24 14:55:36

@albertina that was assault and you could have called the police!

janeainsworth Sun 15-Sept-24 14:58:35

When you say ‘affordable’ do you actually mean cheap?
I learned the hard way that you get what you pay for and if you want somebody experienced who knows what they’re doing & who will listen to what you want, it’s worth every penny to go to them.
That was nearly 20 years ago and I’ve gone to the same salon ever since.
It’s now a luxury but not one I’m going to give up in a hurry.
My hair dresser cuts my hair so well I can style it myself in 5 minutes and I can go 9 or 10 weeks at least in between appointments.

Boz Sun 15-Sept-24 15:40:53

I walked out of a hairdresser's once, First time there and she said she would give me golden highlights. When washed, I saw myself with bright ginger streaks like 'Tigger'. I insisted they re-do the colour and when the bright orange had been removed, I walked out with wet hair, refusing to pay.

Boz Sun 15-Sept-24 15:47:13

Hairdressing is not that popular these days, my girl tells me. So many of them go in for it because they think it is easy and glamorous, little realising it takes brains to mix the bleach and colours and courage and confidence to put scissors to someone's hair. You also need to be able to chit-chat with your customer. My salon has had to get rid of girls who refuse to cut and can't be bothered to talk with customers! Obviously, in the wrong job.

LovelyLady Sun 15-Sept-24 16:08:24

In the grand scheme - really, you’re wondering what to do re. a hair cut that’s not to your liking. Think about it for a few weeks and it will go away!
Can’t believe this is a real problem!!
Also can’t believe I’m responding. What’s the world coming too.
We have OAP’s who will be too poor to put on heating, or pay for TV license or to pay for dental appointments. Parents too poor to have full tummies or to pay rent or buy school uniforms. These are real problems today in UK. A hair cut is a real luxury to many.
Just let your hair grow and think of the real problems some have.

Greciangirl Sun 15-Sept-24 16:19:19

I had my hair cut and blow dried last week.
I said to the hairdresser, not too short.
She said chin length, and I agreed.

Of course I should have known.
She snipped away and didn’t take into consideration when it was blow dried under in a bob that it would be shorter.

I feel silly now as my daughter said to me when I mentioned I was going to hairdresser. ‘don’t get it cut too short mum’.,
And it is.
