Rubbish haircut - what do you do?

I have had my hair cut and blow dried by the same girl about 4 times and it has always been reasonably OK.
However last week she cut it again and made a real mess of it. I wear it quite short with a fringe. This time the fringe is lopsided with one end very short.
One side is cut round my ear the other side is longer and just tucked behind. It has ‘layer lines’ on one side and at the back. All this was concealed by the way she had blow-dried it but she must have known, surely.
I don’t want it re-cut as it is already too short. What would other gransnetters do?
I live in a small town where there are very few affordable hairdressers.

I have stopped going to the hairdresser .
My hair is long and I can easily put it up in various styles .
I've paid a lot of money for appalling cuts in the past .
My hair is curly and unless the hairdresser has curly hair - doesn't seem to understand how to cut it .

If I were you - I would return to the salon and complain , but if they agree to fix it - someone has to cut it shorter .
Why not agree to a free cut later and with another stylist .
Good luck .

Does the hairdresser own the salon? If not, I would go back and ask to speak to the owner/manager, to suggest a refund or a free cut when it’s grown enough to be restyled. If she does own it, you’ll need to speak to her directly, but I would do the same.

Can you try out some different products and scrunch it up a bit until it grows out? Hair gel, styling mousse, straighteners,
curling wand, heated brush? If you own any if these have a play around, you may surprise yourself. Hats, headscarfs, headbands, clips etc will cover up and detract from the cut when your out if it makes you feel better. Hair grows quite quickly so try not to worry too much., it'll soon grow out.

I think we've all been to your hairdresser at some time over the years, Quizzer.

I have tried out various salons in our town but they all seem to take one look at my hair and start sharpening their scissors.

The only thing is to grow it out, change hairdressers or tell her.

I would do this as well. I wouldn’t want t cut it any shorter r fix it immediately but in the future they could fix it free of charge

If she owns the salon I would definitely move but if not I would have a word with the owner now and expect a free cut the next time I returned. The owner should see why people are not returning.

I too have stopped going to expensive, terrible hairdressers. I can count on one one hand the number great cuts I've had!!! Now I just pop it up in a messy bun; quick, stylish & best of all its free. hmm

I say "Lovely, thanks" when they show me, "lovely thank you" when they make sure i can see how bad the back is, then I give them a good tip, get outside, and put a hat on.

I was going to say the same. Might be easier said than done though - I'd certainly need my Big Girl Pants.

well you can certainly even up the fringe yourself if you have sharp scissors. I certainly wouldn't go back I'm very fussy about my cut.. But you could try a barber for short hair, they do know how to cut hair properly.

I have had a couple of dodgy haircuts in the past so I feel your pain.....I don't get fringes anymore but always used to ask them to cut a tiny bit at a time .. so they didn't go too short .....I know hair salons can be very expensive depending where you live...but sometimes its worth paying a bit more if you think you'll get a better cut....it will soon grow and hope your next cut is one you are happier with

My dear dad always used to say “the only difference between a bad haircut and a good one is about six weeks”.

MissAdventure Fri 13-Sept-24 18:24:49

He had obviously never been given a home perm by my mum grin

I, too, have recently had my hair cut far too short. I told my usual hairdresser to keep my ears covered, but oh no, he had to keep snipping away until again it was too short. I am determined to go into the salon " next week" and cancel my next pre-booked 6 weekly appointment.
I must be brave and do it!

I have a hair cut roughly every two years. I have dry cut done by the only woman who works in the barbers down the road.
Usually she just shortens it (I wear it in a self blow-dried bob)
but last time I went she mentioned layers and I said OK, thinking layered bob. I came out with a horrible short layered cut with an awful short fringe. I am still growing it out after six months. I won't say anything because I partly blame myself for not understanding what she intended to do.

It will probably be closer to three years before I go again.

You always make me laugh MissAdventure.

Quite honestly Quizzer I'd just put it down to experience, let it grow out for a couple of weeks and go somewhere else.

I know it's effectively money wasted and it's always annoying when you get a rubbish haircut but it is just that - a haircut.

I couldn't be bothered to go through the probably uncomfortable process of going back to the salon and maybe feeling awkward if you have to sit there having cut by someone else in full view of the girl who did it in the first place.

On fire tonight MissA 🤭

gay18 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:18:48

Yes Miss A I say exactly the same. Get outside put a hat on and wash my hair as soon as I get home. Never get the hairdresser to blow dry it. They don’t know how to do it!

Lostmyglassesxx Sun 15-Sept-24 11:20:53

This is familiar to me - go back . Don’t be shy - be firm that you want her to look it over and if she is tricky then ask for someone else to look it over . You have it imagined it .. but they will probably make you feel you are overreacting . Then let it grow and go elsewhere - never back to the same stylist as you’ve lost your trust .

Doli55 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:22:08

You need to find a bairdresser who can balance and blend it properly. The obvious weight lines can softened either with thinning scissors, razor, layering or a combination of all three, without affecting the overall length of the haircut. It's probably not worth returning to the same hairdresser if she doesn't understood these more advanced techniques - you'll inevitably end up with even shorter hair!

fluttERBY123 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:22:14

This could be the latest trend, asymmetrical. If so she should have consulted you first. Insist on a free blow dry once a week till it grows out?

Jaxjacky Sun 15-Sept-24 11:26:26

I go for a dry trim once a year and a fringe tidy ‘just above my eyebrows please’ in between, costs £15 for the hair trim, the fringe is free,
I’d be fuming Quizzer so you either disguise it best you can, or as suggested, return and address with the top person, good luck.
