Rubbish haircut - what do you do?

I have had my hair cut and blow dried by the same girl about 4 times and it has always been reasonably OK.
However last week she cut it again and made a real mess of it. I wear it quite short with a fringe. This time the fringe is lopsided with one end very short.
One side is cut round my ear the other side is longer and just tucked behind. It has ‘layer lines’ on one side and at the back. All this was concealed by the way she had blow-dried it but she must have known, surely.
I don’t want it re-cut as it is already too short. What would other gransnetters do?
I live in a small town where there are very few affordable hairdressers.

Why are people so afraid to be assertive with their hairdresser. Just tell them, politely, that the cut isn't quite what you asked for, and if you want to cancel an appointment just do it - you don't have to say why, although you cam if you want.

I say "Lovely, thanks" when they show me, "lovely thank you" when they make sure i can see how bad the back is, then I give them a good tip, get outside, and put a hat on.

Oh I do that too!

He had obviously never been given a home perm by my mum 😂😂😂

last time I was at a hairdresser, it was the owner herself who styled my hair...I had been twice before and liked the way she did it..but this particular time, the shop was busy with young girls as it was a school prom night ,and although she wasn't styling their hair, she kept leaving mine...4 times to be exact...
getting her phone and taking photos of the young girls hairstyles...even when cutting mine she wasn't looking ,too busy watching the other stylists...which was a shame as I would have gone back, as it is I never did ,never been to a hairdresser since.

Tanjamaltija Sun 15-Sept-24 12:50:03

Complain. It happened to me once, and the girl said 'No, it's not possible...' so I held up both sides and she said, 'Wow, you're right', and re-did it for free. But that was the last time I went there, even though there are other stylists.

missdeke Sun 15-Sept-24 12:42:16

Unfortunately if it's already to short, tidying it up by someone else can only be done by cutting more off. I think I know the sort of cut they have given you, it's a style I personally find very unattractive. I would however go back to the hairdresser and demand a free cut by somebody else at a later date and if you have no choice ask for a different regular stylist. A hairdresser has no choice to restyle your hair without your agreement first.

Years ago now, but I once had such a disastrous haircut, I burst into tears at the hairdresser’s (he’d given me a ‘short back and sides at the back) and once home, still in tears, phoned dd1, 100 miles away at uni.
I had better not say what I told her I looked like - wouldn’t be seen as exactly PC nowadays!

She phoned the hairdresser and gave him a massive boll*cking!

HeavenLeigh Sun 15-Sept-24 12:31:46

I’d be fuming I feel for you! Luckily I have a fantastic hairdresser who I go to every four weeks I’ve been where you have only once and it was a perm never seen such a frizzy mess it makes my stomach turn thinking of it. I would certainly go back and complain I’d want my money back certainly wouldn’t go there again, once bitten twice shy!

Sennelier1 Sun 15-Sept-24 12:30:53

I would demand a compensation, your money back or a free haircut by the person of your choice. Once you have used your compensation, stop going there. Myself I never go to the hairdresser's but I understand other people want to, so maybe pay a bit more in another salon but go less often? Or find another affordable one a bit further away and make it an outing?

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 12:02:55

if you want to go back/make a point take a photo of how it is now to point out the faults and problems. I once took a photo of how it was perfectly done to ask for "Same again".

Milest0ne Sun 15-Sept-24 12:02:16

If you are going in to complain, take photos and show them at the salon. I have been to a hairdressers where they took photos of my cut.

albertina Sun 15-Sept-24 11:59:58

It's a difficult one. I would vote with my feet in your case.
I complained about a hair cut once, went back to the salon for it to be fixed and the girl who did it burned my ear with the curling tongs, deliberately. I hadn't been rude with my complaint, so was surprised.

I don't have the easiest hair and have now found a good hairdresser who can deal with it, even though it means travelling.

LovesBach Sun 15-Sept-24 11:51:37

Ceertainly go back - the owner will want to know if customers are not happy, and be given a chance to put it right, either by offering a tidy now, if that's possible, or a free haircut. We have all been in your position - only a few months ago I got home from an expensive cut and blow dry; DD took one look and said 'Oh'. That was enough.

🤣🤣🤣

Snap! Although, once with a very arrogant hairdresser who ignored everything I had said I wanted because he knew best, I waited until he had blow dried my hair into his work of art before bringing out my elastic band, sweeping up my locks into a messy pony tail and smiling sweetly at him as I sailed out the door. His face was a picture.

many years ago as a teenager I saved up and went to a well known hairdresser for a haircut, when he was done I left the salon speechless and returned to work. When I got into the office I burst out crying and my manager was as shocked as I was, one of my colleagues volunteered to take me back to the salon and get it sorted, fortunately I did have short hair so it was fixed, my colleague Flora spoke to the stylist and told him if he didn’t fixed she go to the local papers to shame him. It was sorted, but to this day I still feel sick passing the salon, his son has taken over and I’ve heard similar stories about him. Go back explain what you want to happen otherwise you’ll let others know how you were treated a hairdresser is only as good as their reputation and if it’s bad their business will suffer

CazB Sun 15-Sept-24 11:29:55

I quite agree with ferry23. I have had this happen to me, but with colour, it's very annoying and also a waste of money. Perhaps you could disguise it in some way, maybe by brushing it to the side? At least it will grow out in six weeks. Good luck!

Ilovedogs22 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:28:30

Your dad's comment is so blooming brilliant & sooo very 'DAD'. Lovely.😊

Jaxjacky Sun 15-Sept-24 11:26:26

I go for a dry trim once a year and a fringe tidy ‘just above my eyebrows please’ in between, costs £15 for the hair trim, the fringe is free,
I’d be fuming Quizzer so you either disguise it best you can, or as suggested, return and address with the top person, good luck.

fluttERBY123 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:22:14

This could be the latest trend, asymmetrical. If so she should have consulted you first. Insist on a free blow dry once a week till it grows out?

Doli55 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:22:08

You need to find a bairdresser who can balance and blend it properly. The obvious weight lines can softened either with thinning scissors, razor, layering or a combination of all three, without affecting the overall length of the haircut. It's probably not worth returning to the same hairdresser if she doesn't understood these more advanced techniques - you'll inevitably end up with even shorter hair!

Lostmyglassesxx Sun 15-Sept-24 11:20:53

This is familiar to me - go back . Don’t be shy - be firm that you want her to look it over and if she is tricky then ask for someone else to look it over . You have it imagined it .. but they will probably make you feel you are overreacting . Then let it grow and go elsewhere - never back to the same stylist as you’ve lost your trust .

gay18 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:18:48

Yes Miss A I say exactly the same. Get outside put a hat on and wash my hair as soon as I get home. Never get the hairdresser to blow dry it. They don’t know how to do it!

You always make me laugh MissAdventure.

Quite honestly Quizzer I'd just put it down to experience, let it grow out for a couple of weeks and go somewhere else.

I know it's effectively money wasted and it's always annoying when you get a rubbish haircut but it is just that - a haircut.

I couldn't be bothered to go through the probably uncomfortable process of going back to the salon and maybe feeling awkward if you have to sit there having cut by someone else in full view of the girl who did it in the first place.

I have a hair cut roughly every two years. I have dry cut done by the only woman who works in the barbers down the road.
Usually she just shortens it (I wear it in a self blow-dried bob)
but last time I went she mentioned layers and I said OK, thinking layered bob. I came out with a horrible short layered cut with an awful short fringe. I am still growing it out after six months. I won't say anything because I partly blame myself for not understanding what she intended to do.

It will probably be closer to three years before I go again.
