How do you listen to music? ( high quality, classical)

I am having my sitting room redecorated and will be moving everything in preparation. I am thinking of getting rid of the hi-fi system, with four surround-sound speakers. The sound quality is excellent, but I can no longer play vinyl as the record deck is squealing. There is lots of cabling involved and I think my son will be telling me it is time to modernise!

So what are the alternatives?
A compact modern kit, including a record deck and speakers all in one?
Going digital, with Alexa or similar?
Or something else?

OK call me a dinosaur but there is something comforting in owning a CD or record, you can play it whenever you choose and you have it for keeps. It’s like DVD’s as opposed to hoping you can find a film on Netflix (sometimes you can’t)
Given the resurgence in Vinyl’s popularity a sound system with a record deck might be a good investment.

we have a turntable and a cd player and use at least one of them daily. My OH used to build high end speakers so we have a great sound from them I wouldn.t give that up for anything

I listen to classic FM and have Spotify on my phone my daughter put it on for me but only the free one so do get adds. Vast library of all types of music to download.

I did have CD/DVD player but got rid of it before I moved as the kids brought me a smart TV. So no longer needed it.

I am a dinosaur thought and wouldn't have Alexia ,or any pay for view channels on my TV , I don't have laptop or tablet . Just do everything on my phone .

I just use the Alexa to play music. Any one track from a CD is useful sometimes and the sound quality is great. Good enough for us anyway. 😊

We have a turntable and CD player too. We are also lucky enough to have my granddaughter and her musical fiance living with us and he plays our harmonium and piano - all sorts of different types of music including classical. I really enjoy it.

I have two Bluetooth speakers, so I get the stereo sound, and use Spotify.

I'm sure there are more up to date ways, though.

Agree, fgt.

DH swears by his Bose system to which he blue tooths his vplaylist or stuff he has heard about.

We listen to vinyl and CDs through an Arcam system with AE109 speakers.
Plus digital through Sonos roam.

Would never be without an option to play my beloved collections.

Perhaps a visit to Richer Sounds to look at some options?

I used Alexa for listening to radio: Boom and Boom Rock, and for other music. The quality is ok. I also have a portable cd player with internal speakers which suits me. I got rid of all my records years ago. I have Amazon music

I listen to very little music these days but Alexa is there whenever I want to hear anything. I have 3 Alexas, she helps me a lot as I am partially sighted and going blind slowly.

Occasionally she will not play something because I pay zilch.

I would get rid of all of the cables- the room will look better and it will be easier to clean.

Hundreds of cds, out of cases and in special standing files, they don`t take up much space. Played on either of my two bose radio/cd players. I also have a good radio/cd player in my upstairs wellness room. I have all my old playlists, all recorded on my ipod, which is inserted into my bose soundock

All the bose players are old now but the sound is stupendous and I still buy cds if I want something special

I subscribe to Amazon music so anything I ask Alexa is available. It’s on the hall table so just plugs into the nearby socket. No ‘cables’ or trip wires!

This thread is making me smile because I’ve just joined a new U3a group for classical music lovers. The first meeting is on Wednesday and a few days ago we were sent an email asking us to turn up with a favourite CD, play ten minutes of it and give a short chat about why it is special.

Oops! I downsized three years ago and gave away all my CDs!! I no longer have a player as all my music is on Spotify or Amazon and I play it through my TV which has a soundbar.

DSiL helped me choose a portable Bluetooth speaker for my phone. It’s important to have a good bass so worth getting advice. It arrived yesterday. The sound is amazing and it can go anywhere with me. Even the allotment!

Sorted!

What ever you do don’t get rid of your cds or records! You will live to regret it. Listening on the radio or internet is not the same thing at all, yes you can choose something you want to listen to but that ‘ooh I haven’t listened to that for awhile’ moment is gone for ever. Speaking from very sad experience.

I agree! I was ‘talked into it’ and really regret parting company with my CD collection.

I don’t miss the vinyl though.

Alexa for me too.

Witzend Mon 23-Sept-24 10:42:52

We have lots of CDs that TBH are rarely played, though we do have a very good BOSE player.
I used to listen a lot to Classic FM, but became increasingly irritated with all the endlessly repeated ads, so now it’s much more often Radio 3.

I have a CD player and speakers in the conservatory but recently moved all my CDs - mostly but not all classical - to the spare bedroom. These days I listen to classical music either on radio three or on Apple Music which has an amazing library of classical recordings and different recordings by different orchestras and artists. I’m spoilt for choice and have been introduced to new pieces I would never have thought about listening to. I hook my phone up to a speaker that I can move from room to room. I can also play them in the car. Before we moved house, we had a classical music group at the local church. I miss listening with others and talking about the music afterwards.

Many thanks all all the most interesting replies.

I can play CDs on my Bose system upstairs in my little study, so I will definitely be keeping them, but I could get rid of the vinyl, I guess.
What sort of speaker works with an i-phone, please? I could ask my grandson but I haven’t seen him for a while. He advised me against a modern all in one system as the sound quality would not be good enough unless I paid a fortune.

MissAdventure Mon 23-Sept-24 12:34:17

I think any blueooth speaker will work.
Some have excellent sound quality.

That's the end of my knowledge, though

paddyann54 Mon 23-Sept-24 12:46:08

karmaladyI have a couple of thousand CD,s all still in their boxes with the sleeves ,I like to read lyrics and sometimes sing along .You won’t see my CD,s though they live on shelves that are covered by floor to ceiling curtains on either side of the window in the living room ,the hi fi lives in a sideboard as do the hundreds of vinyl LP,s apart from 3 that live in show and listen frames on the wall and they change weekly or more often depending on what we,re playing .I won’t part with my music…ever

merlotgran Mon 23-Sept-24 12:53:05

I have an Anka Soundcore 3 which at £37 is not expensive and has a good bass sound. Obviously you can pay a lot more for more superior quality. According to DSiL it ranks highly in the affordable speaker charts!! 😂

If I lived in a bigger property and had a designated music room (I wish) I’d go for the full works but my neighbours wouldn’t be happy! 😂

harrigran Tue 24-Sept-24 09:04:37

I have a music room where the piano and instruments are kept, I also have the audio equipment and all the CDs stored there.
If I am sitting in my lounge I will play a CD through my blue ray recoder and TV.
I don't use Spotify or any other music online.

lamusica Tue 24-Sept-24 09:42:11

I have hundreds of CDs and couldn’t bear to part with a single one. Mostly they are classical music as my whole life has been in teaching and performing classical music Moving from a home (where I had HiFi and huge speakers in every room and a baby grand piano) to a two-bed flat was a challenge. The piano fits nicely into the second bedroom and instead of the HiFi system I have a Robert’s Boom Box radio and CD player in every room. They are small and very inexpensive and I find the sound quality is great - and I am fussy! Even very small speakers these days can match the old Mordant Short. I have two tiny speakers connected to my smart TV to improve the sound quality. Hope this helps anybody downsizing.
