How do you type on your phone?

I’m interested to know how GNers type on their phones. I use mine all the time rather than my laptop which I find too cumbersome.
My daughter has always laughed at the way I type with my index finger so I’m learning how to use my thumbs. It’s far quicker and more accurate although it’s taking some getting used to, mostly to do with supporting the phone with my little fingers!
It does seem very much a generational thing - everyone under a certain age uses their thumbs. It’s only us oldies who are painstakingly typing away with their fingers.

I try not to use my phone but it would be my left index finger. I will try my last thumb and see if I make fewer mistakes. Speed is certainly not on my side because I want accuracy.

I must be odd, but I use the finger next to my pinky on my left hand!

polomint Tue 15-Oct-24 14:33:18

Sorry right Hand!

I had to pick up my phone to see. On my laptop I use the second fingers on each hand.

On my phone I use my right thumb and the second finger on my left hand!

Am I weird?

I use a stylus as make too many mistakes with thumbs.

Unfortunately, my thumbs don't know what on earth I am trying to get them to do.

Fidelity2 Tue 15-Oct-24 15:46:30

I use my middle finger as it is the longest!

Using both thumbs at speed all the time, must affect them and may well bring on arthritis as they age.

Thumbs are how the young folk type
Older folk usually use their forefinger
I type with my index finger right hand

Me too bluebelle

I only use my phone. I hold it in my right hand and type with my left index finger. After reading the thread I tried to type this with my thumbs and found it too difficult. It feels like my brain isn’t connecting with my thumbs. So, I’ll stick with the one finger method.

I’ve been a touch typist for years and can still get up some speed on a laptop keyboard, but on a phone I can only use the index finger of my right hand. On the iPad I can use both hands but still only use the index fingers, even though I don’t have to look where the letters are. I have a plug in keyboard for my iPad but never use it.

That’s me to a T, though I’m thinking of not typing at all but speaking moving forwards!

I use my middle finger too. I've never tried using my thumbs. I'll have to practice and see hoe I get on.

GrandmaKT Tue 15-Oct-24 20:39:55

I use my index finger, but, funnily enough, I've been trying to use my thumbs recently (not trying to look younger at all lol!)
I've noticed that, whilst I think I mis-type about the same, auto correct seems to 'know' what I am trying to type much more accurately when I am using my thumbs.

Tenko Tue 15-Oct-24 20:51:56

I use my thumbs

GrannyIvy Tue 15-Oct-24 21:07:04

I was a secretary for years but index finger for me. 😂

Mollygo Tue 15-Oct-24 21:26:48

I use a microphone or a stylus or my index finger. As long as I’m typing fast enough, I don’t think it matters.
One DGD uses thumbs, the other uses her finger.
I can put things on my phone faster than either of them, so who cares?

Like Fidelity 2, I use my middle finger as my index finger is affected by arthritis. I use my phone all the time for GN as it's much quicker, more intuitive than my Kindle. I no longer use my laptop.

I use my right middle finger, I’ve never been able to touch type but seem to manage ok!

Tanjamaltija Wed 16-Oct-24 12:03:25

Stylus. But I prefer a laptop.

I’ve tried using my thumbs and find it too cumbersome, often ending with a load of gibberish in the message. I use my ring finger. I learned touch typing too, so know where the letters are on the keyboard, and can type quite quickly with the ring finger. Thumbs just get in the way.

As a publisher / journalist I am accustomed to using my desk top or lap top more than my mobile cell telephone for typing articles ..

I do not care much for cell mobiles due to the lack of safety measures ( spammers / scammers / no do gooders / ).

So, I do not use my cell mobile for Grasnet ..

Only for phone calls and / or to check emails.

MeowWow Wed 16-Oct-24 12:20:47

I type on my phone with my thumbs. I can even type messages without looking at the screen but I do have to check the messages before I send them.

Shill29 Wed 16-Oct-24 12:54:21

Interesting! I’ve just tried both. Typing with finger came out correctly with thumb but with finger it read typing with ginger 🤣
