How do you type on your phone?

I’m interested to know how GNers type on their phones. I use mine all the time rather than my laptop which I find too cumbersome.
My daughter has always laughed at the way I type with my index finger so I’m learning how to use my thumbs. It’s far quicker and more accurate although it’s taking some getting used to, mostly to do with supporting the phone with my little fingers!
It does seem very much a generational thing - everyone under a certain age uses their thumbs. It’s only us oldies who are painstakingly typing away with their fingers.

I've always used my thumbs. Having been a typist/secretary all my working life, it's the nearest to what I'm used to.

It also means you're not covering the screen with your hand whilst you type, so you can see the other buttons and features.

I can only use my index finger. My painful arthritic hands make it difficult to type on a phone.
A proper keyboard is my preferred device.

I am trying to use my thumbs more often.

I have definitely developed 'fat fingers' over the last three or four years and have found that I do make far fewer mistakes with my thumb(s). That still seems strange to me, as thumbs are much fatter fingers!

Fascinating what one learns on Gransnet! Typed with my thumb!

I did a lot of typing for work too JackyB and was fast and accurate. Thumbs is definitely the way to go.
It seem that size of digit isn’t the issue Oldnproud. Most men have bigger fingers than me and it doesn’t seem to affect them.

Thumbs - never thought of that! - I will give it a go!

I have always use my thumbs I used to touch type wether that makes a difference to the preference I’m not sure it just feels more comfortable.

Awkwardly with index finger because of arthritis and Dupuytrens contracture problems with my hands.

Shinamae Tue 15-Oct-24 09:10:36

I use the microphone. 🤓

I must be a bit strange - I use the side of my middle finger! Much prefer typing on laptop - can sort of touch type as taught myself years ago on typewriter.

I can't type much on my phone.
I use a stylus on a tablet mainly, but sometimes a keyboard.

I've seen the DC and DGC typing rapidly on their phones with thumbs, far faster than I can type!

Greyduster Tue 15-Oct-24 10:26:13

I’ve been a touch typist for years and can still get up some speed on a laptop keyboard, but on a phone I can only use the index finger of my right hand. On the iPad I can use both hands but still only use the index fingers, even though I don’t have to look where the letters are. I have a plug in keyboard for my iPad but never use it.

Fleurpepper Tue 15-Oct-24 11:13:37

Same here Greyduster. I try to avoid typing on phone if at all possible, and use my pad or tablet.

TheWeirdo Tue 15-Oct-24 11:14:31

I'm left-handed so I use my left index finger but I also use a stylus pen!

But I much prefer clacking away on my laptop!

Theexwife Tue 15-Oct-24 11:14:41

If it is a long text I use the dictate option.

Sago Tue 15-Oct-24 11:22:59

I narrate my texts and emails, much easier, no typing necessary.

Shelflife Tue 15-Oct-24 11:25:49

Index finger every time!

Elusivebutterfly Tue 15-Oct-24 11:45:45

I am a fast typist on my laptop (though slower than I used to be) but find the phone very slow and difficult. My sons say I should use my thumbs as they do but find it impossible. I use my right index or middle finger on the phone but am very slow and make mistakes.
I don't think the younger generation realise how arthritis affects how you do things.

Babs03 Tue 15-Oct-24 12:40:22

Have always used thumbs x

Baggs Tue 15-Oct-24 13:16:14

I swipe type. That way you only need one finger.

Calendargirl Tue 15-Oct-24 13:28:38

I use my index finger on my I pad and I phone, but prefer my I pad as my phone is a smallish one. I know younger ones use their thumbs, but I prefer my finger.

It’s fast enough for me.

gulligranny Tue 15-Oct-24 13:33:05

Taught to touch-type many (too many!) years ago, so typing on my phone isn't, to me, real typing. I've tried using my thumbs but then I can't seem to hold the phone, so it's index finger for me.

M0nica Tue 15-Oct-24 14:07:45

I can neither type nor easily read on my phone. I have dyspraxia which means congenital clumsiness, plus the tips of my fingers on my right hand are numb, and my left hand is developing the same problem.

Mobile phones are far too small and fiddly for me to cope with so I never use them unless I have to.

I just wish there was more sympathy and understanding for those of us who are not techno phobes or stupid but I have good copperbottomed reasons why we find mobile phones difficult to use.
