the Isle of Man for a holiday?

M0nica Thu 24-Oct-24 01:57:45

As much as I enjoyed my holiday in the Isle of Man, I did find its air of very conspicuous wealth a bit overwhelming. It is not somewhere where you would want to be poor, or even be on an average income.

Like the Channel Islands it is a tax haven and many very wealthy people are domiciled there for tax reasons

I forgot about the Fairy Bridge!
Our coach driver sort of ‘mocked’ it, but we noticed that he very definitely wished the Fairies a Good Morning as he drove us over it.

Yes

We flew from Bristol to Isle of Man and in the terminal information office bought a 7 day ticket for travel on buses and trains/trams. Well worth it. The bus dropped us outside our hotel on Douglas seafront. We travelled all over the island from there it is a good base. They have a good theatre there that has some very good shows. We saw Rhod Gilbert there. I loved the island and the people were very friendly.

It's lovely, quaintly old fashioned but with good restaurants. The receptionist in a major tourist attraction let us leave our suitcase with no charge while we went and found a restaurant for lunch., I can't think of many places that let you do that these days or where you would feel safe doing it. Trains, trams, horse drawn carriages, it was like stepping back to a bygone era.

We were there 2 weeks ago , weather wasn't too bad most of week but then we had a day of rain and wind which stopped ferries coming and going for a day ,luckily sorted before we sailed home ,there are some lovely places to visit parking in some can be a problem .

Spent my childhood holidays in Douglas loved it. Remember the horse drawn trams and Fairy Bridge. When you crossed over had to say good morning fairies.

I'm a resident. Great place to live and work. Easy to get around on local transport, but a bit weather dependent for visitors. Check forecast before booking

We went for the first time July this year with our own car, on ferry from Heysham to Douglas. (Wouldn’t recommend Best Western in Douglas, did have parking but room, described as double, was barely big enough for a single!) Drove all over, some of TT route, very interesting and picturesque, took railway to top of Snaefell, fortunately on a clear day. A must visit is to the famous Laxey Wheel. Thoroughly enjoyed the 5 days there, actually avoided centre of Douglas apart from transit through to/from hotel.

Avoid going when TT races are on unless you are a motorbike fan. Usually last week in May and first week in June.

That’s the only time we’ve been.

I went once as a child and loved it, then later on in life I used to go to the TT races quite regularly, such a brilliant atmosphere.

It's on my bucket list!

Obviously not a Manx cat, as they have no tail!

I had a cat from IOM. My husband was there for TT week. He found him as a tiny stray. Lived in his tent. Got a message put out on Manx radio but no one claimed him. Put him in a cardboard box, put the box inside his leathers and brought him home on his motor bike ( had checked that it was ok to bring him to England). Apart from being seasick on the boat he was fine. Got out of the cardboard box when he arrived home and started to chase his tail. We called him Douglas. He was the best cat I ever had; imo the best cat that anyone ever had. Had several cats after we lost him but he was irreplaceable.

What a lovely story with a happy ending MayBee.

I liked it so much that I considered moving there. At that time you needed permission to do that ,which I was granted, but I moved South instead.

I went twice in the 60s, was only 17 and 18, loved it, it`s so pretty. One of the times was TT week, it was difficult to go out anywhere, as the roads were closed. We spent a fabulous day up at the Gooseneck, watching the racing, but to get there had to climb up a big hill, through loads of bushes.

As children, we used to go every year. We enjoyed the sail across the sea, landing in Douglas.

It's a lovely place to holiday, and the trams are great to use, going all round the island. You can even go up to the top of Snaefell.

Recommended.

We have friends on the Isle of Man so have visited several times, including a couple of times during the TT weeks and the atmosphere is great as everyone is so friendly. The island has some lovely places to visit and there are some good places to eat especially if you like fish.

Am I right in thinking the OP’s intention is that we answer the question and then follow with ‘Have you ever been to Jersey (for example) ‘ and so on ……..

I’ve been to Jersey.

I’m trying to think of somewhere to go on holiday and apart from my brother who went many moons ago to the Isle of Man for the TT I know of no one who has been there and wondered what it was like.

M0nica Tue 22-Oct-24 14:03:48

Yes, we went on an organised 'little trains' tour and rode all the different trains. We determined to go back independently to see all the other things we missed.

Mollygo Tue 22-Oct-24 13:54:23

Yes. Port Erin and Port St Mary are lovely. Lots of places within easy reach but as someone already said, weather is variable-a bit like NW England.

Witzend Tue 22-Oct-24 13:36:09

Not personally, but dd2 and her chap spent a few days there not long ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
