What does “ having fun” mean?

What does it mean to “ have fun”? Obviously different things to different people.
On Bargain Hunt, contestants say they “ want to have fun.” Experts describe an article eg a vase, as “fun”.

To me, having fun is something children do.
I enjoy certain things, but I rarely think of them as “ fun”. I am not going partying or to a skate park. 😱
What does it mean to you to have fun? 😀

DH and I often have fun - we have a similar sense of humour and enjoy doing things together.

Well I’ve had a fun time today at the Trafford Centre believe it or not! A pleasant experience as I got the 5 items on my list and I did have enjoyment in choosing them - plus I was with one of my book club friends, same age as me (70) and she is great company.

Some things are more ” fun” with other people, but like Pascal, I enjoy doing something rather than having fun. Maybe it is just semantics.

You used the word "enjoy" and that means you are having "fun". They are now the same feeling. I am sorry to say: you have fun doing something.

I had fun yesterday, I went to a pottery painting morning with a couple of friends from my art class. I'm really quite excited to see how my decorations on a sushi dish look once they have been fired, three seabirds with a border that looks like sand and the sea. I have lots of fun. I used to play a lot of sport, that was fun. Fun to me is anything that I do that I enjoy regardless of the outcome so it's totally for my pleasure.

^Someone on GN once asked why we had to stop having fun just because we were getting older, and she was going to wear her Christmas jumper and enjoy it.^

My Dad (93) was watching a programme yesterday about a factory where they make Christmas jumpers, and asked why he hasn't got one.
So I've ordered him one from Amazon, he can wear it to his day centre and join in the fun 🥳

I love that! Hope he has a great Christmas in his new jumper!

I remember doing an exercise class to this song!
It's stuck in my brain ever since.

I think people use ‘having fun’ to mean enjoying themselves.

shysal Fri 29-Nov-24 14:38:49

What I can't understand is that some people think they can't have fun unless they are drunk! What is fun about making yourself ill?

winterwhite Fri 29-Nov-24 14:30:36

For me having fun involves other people, and has nothing to do with funny - that’s odd now I think of it.

Then there’s the ‘well that was fun’, that follows turning out the cupboard under the stairs in search of something and not finding it.

Babs03 Fri 29-Nov-24 14:01:04

Fun to me means doing what I enjoy or sharing in the enjoyment of the family. But sometimes things described as fun turn out to be anything but. It cannot be manufactured.

I love to have fun with my grand children, they make me laugh a lot. I also have fun taking part in Aquacise classes where we also have a laugh. Anything that involves a challenge and makes me smile and/or is physical and with others, is my fun. I used to love taking the stall to gala days, where everyone would share a laugh and a bargain.

I think it is semantics. Having fun just means enjoying yourself doesn't it? Doesn't have to include falling down drunk or running round squealing or wearing silly hats.

Someone on GN once asked why we had to stop having fun just because we were getting older, and she was going to wear her Christmas jumper and enjoy it. Well that's not my idea of fun (they may make me smile for 30 seconds but I don't feel the urge to wear one) but it was obviously something that floated her boat and she felt she was having fun so why not?

Surely 'having fun' is what the French call 'joie de vivre'. the joy of living. Definitions of 'joie de vivre, to me defien fun.
a delight in being alive; keen, carefree enjoyment of living.

a cheerful enjoyment of life, an exultation of spirit, and general happiness. It "can be a joy of conversation, joy of eating, joy of anything one might do… And joie de vivre may be seen as a joy of everything, a comprehensive joy, a philosophy of life,

Aren't those definitions of joi de vivre also a definition of fun?

We love spa days, not the one with lots of treatments but spas with lots of ways of enjoying water with hot pools, coldpools, jacuzzis, saunas, and many other water delights. We love it and have lots of fun, especially if our DD or DGD can join us.

It was the same when we ran an antiques stall, we had great fun going to auctions and hunting stock out and also great fun at the antique fairs we did, we usually had outside pitches and met so many people, helped each other, and sold to each other.

After a day at a spa or after a good auction or sale, one was buzzing, cheerful, laughing and saying what fun we had had.

I don't like organised fun where I feel obliged to join in hilarity. I mean like Hi Di Hi stuff.

I like fun in spontaneous things, and in everyday happenings.

crazyH Fri 29-Nov-24 13:41:39

I had great fun today. No stress what to wear - no plans for visitors - still in my pyjamas - wrapped a few presents - going to write a few cards after lunch - and actually I love it when it’s dull - when the sun is up, i feel I have to go out and do things (which I do almost every day) - the only thing I need to do later is book a nice restaurant to take the whole family, in the New Year, lovely, grey sky day 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I enjoy having fun with good friends at our coffee meet ups locally.
When I was fit and able, I used to have fun, scuffling through crispy autumn leaves in the sunshine. Simple pleasures.

AreWeThereYet Fri 29-Nov-24 13:39:03

Just anything that makes me smile. Doing the crossword or playing Scrabble with MrA is fun because we come up with such daft answers some times and end up killing ourselves laughing. Meeting friends in a pub or for coffee for a chat is usually fun Being with AC and/or GC is usually fun.

I think having fun means doing something I really enjoy.. it doesn't necessarily have to include other people..

What a sad world it would be if only children could have fun! We enjoy socialising with good company, sometimes with friends, sometimes with family, and we always have plenty of laughter. That's what we, as adults, call 'having fun'.

I agree with this
I intend to go on having fun in my life for as long as I can. Very sad if you can’t see the fun in anything.
Bananas on a hat ? Yes, it may be funny but if seeing it makes you smile, surely you are having fun.

We’re off to our local tonight, we’ll have fun; a few jokes, a few laughs, good company amongst friends and acquaintances, we always come home me with a smile.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 29-Nov-24 12:14:24

I am in my sixties, I have fun with my friends, I have fun with my family.

Why does aging mean that we cannot have fun?
