What does “ having fun” mean?

To be lighthearted, have a laugh, doing things I enjoy, good company.

It’s just another of the (many) things that annoy me! I agree that it’s something for children, and can’t think when ( if ever) I’ve said I had great fun.
I think I would say something was funny rather than fun.
Recently my friend was showing me a hat she had knitted, and had put a wee bunch of knitted bananas on the top. ‘ It’s just a bit of fun’, said she.

Yes that's how I see it too.
Perhaps I am too easily pleased.
I would describe the social groups that I belong to as fun.
Even the Church cleaning team, we have 'fun' because we all get on well together and enjoy a chat and a laugh as we work.

I intend to go on having fun in my life for as long as I can. Very sad if you can’t see the fun in anything.
Bananas on a hat ? Yes, it may be funny but if seeing it makes you smile, surely you are having fun.

I think having fun means doing something I really enjoy.. it doesn't necessarily have to include other people..

Just anything that makes me smile. Doing the crossword or playing Scrabble with MrA is fun because we come up with such daft answers some times and end up killing ourselves laughing. Meeting friends in a pub or for coffee for a chat is usually fun Being with AC and/or GC is usually fun.

I had great fun today. Surely 'having fun' is what the French call 'joie de vivre'. the joy of living. Definitions of 'joie de vivre, to me defien fun.

Aren't those definitions of joi de vivre also a definition of fun?

We love spa days, not the one with lots of treatments but spas with lots of ways of enjoying water with hot pools, coldpools, jacuzzis, saunas, and many other water delights. We love it and have lots of fun, especially if our DD or DGD can join us.

It was the same when we ran an antiques stall, we had great fun going to auctions and hunting stock out and also great fun at the antique fairs we did, we usually had outside pitches and met so many people, helped each other, and sold to each other.

After a day at a spa or after a good auction or sale, one was buzzing, cheerful, laughing and saying what fun we had had.

I think it is semantics. Having fun just means enjoying yourself doesn't it? Doesn't have to include falling down drunk or running round squealing or wearing silly hats.

Someone on GN once asked why we had to stop having fun just because we were getting older, and she was going to wear her Christmas jumper and enjoy it. Well that's not my idea of fun (they may make me smile for 30 seconds but I don't feel the urge to wear one) but it was obviously something that floated her boat and she felt she was having fun so why not?

I love to have fun with my grand children, they make me laugh a lot. I also have fun taking part in Aquacise classes where we also have a laugh. Anything that involves a challenge and makes me smile and/or is physical and with others, is my fun. I used to love taking the stall to gala days, where everyone would share a laugh and a bargain.

Fun to me means doing what I enjoy or sharing in the enjoyment of the family. But sometimes things described as fun turn out to be anything but. It cannot be manufactured.

For me having fun involves other people,and has nothing to do with funny - that’s odd now I think of it.

Then there’s the ‘well that was fun’, that follows turning out the cupboard under the stairs in search of something and not finding it.

What I can't understand is that some people think they can't have fun unless they are drunk! What is fun about making yourself ill?

I think people use ‘having fun’ to mean enjoying themselves.
