Washing machine suggestions

My Beko washing machine has died. It was probably 8 years old so no point in trying to repair it. Apparently there's a problem with the circuit board.
I hope to be moving house within a year, so I need something I can take with me.
Can someone recommend a machine 8kg or under for about £300. Pref less?

I hope your machine lasts until the move! It was so annoying that mine died when it did, as I knew the move would be fairly imminent. If it lasts, maybe leave it behind and buy a new one for the new house. They are tricky things to move, in any case. You have to immobilise them so that the drum doesn't move. Something to do with weights? And then you have to remove the immobiliser before you can use it in the new house. The hoses can also play up when you move. I would try to limp on with it if you can, and then buy a new one and have it delivered to the new house. It might be worth trying to get the circuit board replaced? We use a great local repair man who can deal with all makes and doesn't charge a fortune. Use one of these if you can find one, rather than someone tied to an individual manufacturer, who has a vested interest in flogging you a new machine!

That's so true Granjeanne. I use the short programme on my Beko mostly. Only rarely do I do another, hotter, longer one.
It's still working fingers crossed 🤞

And if you are going to buy one, I'd recommend the Beko. Much cheaper and work perfectly. Many machines have lots of bells and whistles which I would never use. And the more complicated they are, the more there is to go wrong. I prefer dials over push buttons or touchscreen controls. Simpler to use and more robust.

We moved three years ago. Just before the move, my 11 year old washing machine died and I had to get a new one quickly. The only one which could be delivered quickly was a Bosch. We used it for three months and then brought it with us to our new home, because I was reluctant to leave behind a new machine! We put the Bosch in the utility room. The previous owners had left behind their own machine, a Beko which was several years old and still worked. And it's still going! If you live locally, you can come and get it and I will use the one which I brought with me! The Beko works perfectly, by the way. Where do you live?

I’ve got a Neff. It’s my second Neff because they’ve been very reliable. I’ve had Hotpoint and Hoover washing machines before, but I like the Neff the best.

I was told the more features, the more to go wrong.
I just need basic, anyway.

My friend has spent money on expensive Miele washing machines and they have never lasted very long.

We bought my son a John Lewis machine, mid range, and that gave up the ghost about 3 months after the warranty ran out. He was advised by a washing machine engineer not to go for any so called Smart machines and the engineer recommended Beko. Neko have 10 year parts warranty. The Beko was 10kg 1600 rpm machine and cost £279 on Amazon but came from Appliances Online. I ordered via Amazon to get the free Prime delivery.

I've just bought aLOGIk from Currys went for cheapest and can't
beleve how good it is its quieter and has a better spin than the more expensive Bosch I'd had the Bosch years but it had a rubbish spin and was extremely loud I'm not very technical and the Logik is really easy to use glad I went for much cheaper

My DM always had a top loader Madeleine . They do seem to be good and less backbreaking.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Dec-24 19:38:15

Yes, good point.

That's why I'm sceptical that lots of machines are catching on fire still.

Primrose53 Mon 09-Dec-24 19:35:56

MissAdventure

A machine that was a fire risk would be taken off the market.

They don’t know they are a fire risk until they catch fire. 😉

A couple of things that may also be relevant. I had a top loading washing machine , which I was very pleased with. My back is bad and it was easier to load and unload. Also I could open it up and add to the wash. A friend had a front loader, which the seal went and her whole kitchen was flooded as she was out for the day. Not wishing to add to your woes , but if you are changing it might be something you would want to consider

I am too lazy to get up and look, so no idea what make my machine is. For the 52 years that I have been married (apart from the first few with my mum's old twin-tub) I have always bought washers and dryers from David Wood of Glossop (are you allowed to recommend private firms on here?) as I grew up with him. The shop is now managed by his son cos David is "getting on" in age, but the service is second to none and his knowledge is phenomenal. We have had just three washers and dryers in those 50-odd years, the latest of which I expect to last a while longer yet. His recommendations change from time to time according to the current state of particular manufacturers - what was high quality 15 years ago is not necessarily so now. He takes the time to explain all his reasoning with comparison to the others. He also offers competitive prices so once I've homed in on a model I get it from him. He's also quick to resolve any problems (he's an electrician by trade so not just a salesman), and I trust him 100%. We don't even live in Glossop!

Mine is a whirlpool and I’ve have it for over 15 years with no problems. It’s mostly been just for 2 of us, but my daughter and granddaughter lived with us for just over a year. The same company manufacture hotpoint. If I can’t get a whirlpool washing machine when this one eventually breaks down, I will get a hotpoint.

Foxyferret Mon 09-Dec-24 15:55:08

I had a Whirlpool which lasted 20 years but they are more expensive now. got a Hoover now which I like as it has 3 short programmes 15, 30 and 44 mins for things not badly soiled as well as other longer programmes.

My last washing machine was a Zanussi, which was 20 years old when it died this year. I replaced it with another one and am very pleased with it.

Milest0ne Mon 09-Dec-24 14:03:33

We rent our Meile washing machine. No problems after 3 years. if anything goes wrong it will be replaced with a new one.
Regarding brands. We had a Bosch fridge freezer but the seals disintegrated. The Bosch engineer said we would have to replace the doors not the seals. £100 each plus £ 40+ each for new drawers. Bought a new one of a different brand for not much more than that.

I had a quick look at Which.com after I read this post and found that the usual expensive suspects were at the top of the list.
The first that came in under £750 was Bosch (at £500), followed by Zanussi and AEG.
Personaly I'd always go for a Bosch now, I've used them for some years and find them very reliable. I'm afraid that Beko don't feature on their list at all but I know that their dishwasher is recommended,

DianaLouise Mon 09-Dec-24 12:53:19

a few months back I purchased a Bosch washing machine from Euronics it came with a three year guarantee and we paid for an additional three years- which gives us 6 years worry free. So far, I am so pleased with it, can set it to come on before I get up so it is finished and can be hung out and also has a very good hour wash for mixed loads and aslo a shorter half hour wash for refreshing socks etc so would recommend this .

Elliebeth Mon 09-Dec-24 12:19:45

I had a Beko fridge freezer for about 15 years. Passed to my brother 5 years ago and it’s now doing service in the garage as a beer fridge. The Bosch oven on the other hand, three years old needed a new element a month ago .

cmcpne Mon 09-Dec-24 11:55:50

I would stay with Beko. For value for money I find them very good.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Dec-24 11:44:29

I loved my hoovermatic.
The boil wash was a sight to behold!!

Shinamae Mon 09-Dec-24 11:41:57

For years I had hoover washing machines,a couple of years ago when it started making a funny noise. I was going to get it repaired but was told it wasn’t worth it so I’ve got a Bosch. I am very pleased with it but the spin speed is only 1400 and on the Hoover it was 1600 so I do end up giving it an extra spin which is another 13 minutes. Not necessary all the time, especially when the line drying is good

Spanisheyes Mon 09-Dec-24 11:37:38

I recently bough my third Bosh washing machine. I’ve always been really please with my last two, but my new one isn’t a patch on my other two. The program setting are far too many, and complicated, and when I do a wash with sheets, they come out all tangled together, the same happens if I was trousers together. I’m very disappointed. That never happened with my other two.
