Do you remember white tights

Sitting here remembering my teens, probs 1971/72 have a photo somewhere, wearing white tights, platform shoes, a short dress, orange, with flowers on it and puffed sleeves. I think my make up was white eye shadow and an orange lipstick.
But those white tights!
Yuk!

I remember wearing white tights in the early 70s. The colour was called Cream Soda. Another popular colour was Sweet Pepper, a very dark tan. I always got them from Littlewoods.

My mum hated any thing I chose to wear but the smelly Afghan coat was my greatest parental disapprovement success!

My brother had an Afghan coat too - my DM always remembers it as being smelly but I don't. Maybe I never got close enough.

Another 'smell' she always brings up is my best friend's patchouli perfume, which DM absolutely hated and used to go round with air freshener whenever best friend had been in the house. I didn't like it either but didn't feel the need to freshen the air 😅

I had an Afghan that biodegraded at an alarming rate and got smellier and smellier; eventually it just felt apart.

I wore white lipstick and later black lipstick. White stockings and later black tights. During my hippy phase I drew flowers on my face.

I vaguely remember white tights but I definitely had white crinkly boots, which kept slipping down so you were constantly pulling them up. I used to spend Saturday afternoon shortening the dress I was going out in that night, then I’d put a coat over it, tell my parents I was off, before they could see how indecent I was. I then moved onto the hippie stage with long skirts, cheesecloth shirts and platform soled shoes. My mum hated any thing I chose to wear but the smelly Afghan coat was my greatest parental disapprovement success!

I also wore white tights at 16 and thought I was the bees knees in my mini going to the dancing in Glasgow dressed to kill. Until my mother commented “yer legs look like ham houghs in thae things”

I remember white tights came back for a very short time in the 90s.

I had some white tights when I was about 12/13. I wore them proudly, with a pair of wet look sock things that you wore inside shoes to convert them into boots grin. I'm sure they were as bad as they sound, but (a) it was the early 70s, so worse was yet to come, and (b) if you can't indulge in crimes against fashion at 13, when can you?

Fortunately, no photos of these monstrosities exist.

You must be the same age as me- 66?, I remember the wet look knee highs worn with lace up shoes that made it look like you were wearing boots. Had forgotten all about white tights but definitely wore them in about 1972

I remember them and thought they were great but like a lot of fashions they came and went.

I wish I could say the same thing about ripped jeans...!

MrsAF Tue 21-Jan-25 13:02:27

Oh yes! I wore them on my wedding day but these in the photo were called something like porcelain? Hot pants😜

Cateq Tue 21-Jan-25 13:01:32

I can remember begging my mum to buy me white tights as my DB girlfriend at the time always wore them. This would’ve been 1967/8.

Yes, I do remember white tights but I always thought they looked 'too cold'. Much preferred the ecru shade - much gentler and looked great against dark dresses and skirts.

I remember them well. They were very trendy. I never had a pair though. I generally wore trousers and tops. I had some embroidered bell bottoms - they were fab!

White tights with white Courreges-style boots in the late 60s, how trendy was that! I could afford it, having landed my first "graduate job" in London. Happy days!

Sorry ... I just read some more of the replies and I see this has already been mentioned!!!

Yes, as another teenager in the early 70's, I remember them well.
Another thing I remember wearing but to school with uniform, was grey tights (like the white) but with long white socks over the top of them. Did anyone else do this?

Lovely pics, brings back memories.
I bet those were happy days Silverlining and Kate1949.
Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️

Awful things. Never gave them the time of day. Non of my friends either. Still we were country girls.

A French girl I knew was the first to wear white tights .
They were expensive .
She had very slim legs and Mediterranean skin and they looked fantastic on her .
When I finally got my white tights -they didn't look quite the same.
I wore white tights regularly for ballet ,but they were seamed and thick .
I remember getting white patent buckled shoes and a matching handbag .
I thought teamed with a purple
jumper ,skirt and tights that I looked amazing. The purples didn't quite match .
I saw my ever patient , kind and generous grandmother give a wry smile when she saw the effect .
I once heard her attempt to conceal her laughter at the long black dress that I made .
I decided on Medieval sleeves and designed them to almost meet the ground .
I'd cut the dress out without a pattern and laboured over it on an old sewing machine for three days .
I was so determined to wear it .
And teamed with another make -a long bkack cloak I went off to a party .
It was the first and last outing of my dark arts outfit .
A guy said loudly here comes Bat Woman and soon a crowd of his male friends dissolved into fits of uncontrollable laughter .

Late 60s, I think. I had a black-&-white op art plastic mac, black patent shoes & white tights, with giant black-&-white plastic hoop earrings. For variation, I also had neon-bright stockings in various colours (lime green, shocking pink, acid yellow, etc). I used to wear a different colour on each leg, never a matching pair. Ah, the heady days of youth!

dalrymple23 Mon 20-Jan-25 14:31:36

I don't think that I ever had white tights but did have some navy and dark green ones plus the ubiquitous black. Do you remember those nonsense numbers which incorporated knickers with the tights?

I was lucky enough to have a friend who worked at The Chelsea Cobbler and so I had discounted or on sale wonderful boots: the black snakeskin knee highs and the thigh high black leather! I still have them but, funnily enough, cannot get them over my fat legs!!

Doodledog Mon 20-Jan-25 13:41:10

Lovely photos!

And your boots are very stylish, grannynannywanny. I would have been very envious of those.

AuntieE Mon 20-Jan-25 13:40:34

I had lace up white shiny pvc boots like these in the late sixties. They were so uncomfortable to wear but I wouldn’t admit it.

Mine were black and the most comfortable pair of boots I had ever had.

Doodledog Mon 20-Jan-25 13:39:55

Yes, the white tights I remember well. If we couldn't afford to buy them I seem to remember boiling tan ones in bleach at a friend's house.
That's the sort of 'ingenious' thing that my friends and I would have done grin I love the way teenage minds work.
