Sitting here remembering my teens, probs 1971/72 have a photo somewhere, wearing white tights, platform shoes, a short dress, orange, with flowers on it and puffed sleeves. I think my make up was white eye shadow and an orange lipstick.
But those white tights!
Yuk!

I am a late 50’s baby and can remember my mum wearing white tights and white shiny knee high boots.

The shiny knee high boots would possibly be ‘wet look’ boots. I wore red wet look hot pants with a green apple on the bib.
Things were a bit kinky back then 😆

Yes! Dad said I had legs like chalks!

Skydancer Sun 19-Jan-25 21:35:39

I wore white tights though they made my legs look fat. I also had white lipstick as I recall together with thick black eyeliner and false lashes.

My Saturday job was in the haberdashery dept. of the local Co-op department store. I lusted after the Cream Soda tights, because I had to wear American Tan tights as part of my school uniform. My mother wouldn't allow them.
I think they were made by Berketex

Reading the handbag thread, brought back memories of the leather handbags and gloves they sold in the same dept. Think of the queen.
My job was to dust the bags, I thought they looked so sophisticated.

There were also green and orange tights, to be honest American tan tights were pretty much orange anyway.

I had some white tights when I was about 12/13. I wore them proudly, with a pair of wet look sock things that you wore inside shoes to convert them into boots grin. I'm sure they were as bad as they sound, but (a) it was the early 70s, so worse was yet to come, and (b) if you can't indulge in crimes against fashion at 13, when can you?

Fortunately, no photos of these monstrosities exist.

Yes, I had white lacy tights in the 60s, and some very pale Mary Quant ones.

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 22:06:41

I went through a stage in my teens of wearing thick white tights, and my favourite ones had holey patterns up the sides.

I went to a club wearing my tights and a black, long jumper (nothing else!) and won a prize for best dressed clubber. grin

I vaguely remember wearing white tights. I definitely remember wearing platform shoes though. And corduroy bell bottoms

flappergirl Sun 19-Jan-25 22:12:26

Barleyfields, I also wore white lacy tights in the 60's before I was a teenager. I felt so grown up. I don't know if I've dreamt this, but I'm sure I had white lace gloves to match too.

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 22:12:53

Are we around the same age, batty?
My mum wouldn't allow me anything too trendy.

I wore ‘Ecru’ coloured tights. Funny how I remember the name of that colour 55 years on.

And black nail polish - I had long strong nails (still have but I like them snipped and coloured like Smarties nowadays). The black nail polish wasn’t available locally (not even Biba on Oldham street in Manchester!). I had to send away for it with a postal order. It was made by Woltz Italiana.

I’m a mine of useless information…..

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 22:25:26

I love that word: ecru.
Like a milky, creamy,beige.
Ecru.

merlotgran Sun 19-Jan-25 22:26:01

It’s true they made your legs look fat. I think that’s why we all adopted the pigeon toe stance for photographs.

I wore mine with black patent leather, round toed shoes a burgundy tweed effect mini skirt and a black skinny rib polo neck jumper. This was in the mid sixties when Twiggy had just arrived.

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 22:28:22

I've always had very slim legs.
Claire Rayners body on Twiggys legs, as my "friend" informed me. grin

Tickled me up, so true! 🤣🤣🤣

I always wore the most outrageous outfits I could.

When my mum refused to come out in public with me, I knew I'd won the battle.

I think the most outrageous for me were the red wet look hot pants but also an orange dress - orange again - with a diamond cut out where the belly is and a large tacky gold chain across it, I was going to go out showing my belly but my mum made me wear a tight white turtle neck jumper under the dress. The ensemble was completed with white knee length boots.

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 23:11:07

Woweee!
That sounds a marvellous outfit.
I missed out on the 60s, so my ensembles were punk, but I also wore 60s outfits, if I found them.

Granmarderby10 Sun 19-Jan-25 23:17:58

flappergirl you didn’t dream it, I wore white lace tights(they probably had seems up the back, but also matching gloves.

I vividly recall being dressed up like a dogs dinner in them before I went on an aeroplane for the first time. This was exciting in fact amazing!

I was aged 4 this would be 1965 I wore them with (as my mum called it) a costume: a pleat skirted dress that had an under slip top attached and a matching boxy shaped jacket, with fabric buttons the same colour Fawn/ brown Very formal
People actually got dressed up to fly then so not so unusual
Definitely was wearing lace tights at my older brothers wedding 2 years later too (got the pictures to prove it) 🫣and hair “done up”.

Shelflife Sun 19-Jan-25 23:19:41

White stretchy shiny knee boots for me too and and a very short dress and equally short white PVC coat. Also loved my cherry red crushed velvet bell bottomed trousers - happy days !!

Grannynannywanny Sun 19-Jan-25 23:33:06

I was the height of sophistication going to secondary school in the late 60s with American tan tights and knee high white socks. The rest of my body was the colour of a bottle of milk. But my legs looked like a lanky chicken wearing socks 🐓

Granmarderby10 Sun 19-Jan-25 23:43:27

After the obligatory American tan tights phase, just as I hit my teens, Pewter Grey tights were a thing for ages.

Loath sheer tights with a passion now, but would never have left the house without them covering my milk bottle white legs, even in a heatwave, and with Scholl sandals!
I blame Farah Fawsett Majors.😉
